One thing I forgot to mention in the video is, if you are going to do this, make sure the engine is stone cold. You do not want to do this to a hot or even warm engine.
nope. get it hot. wallmart purple power. pressure washer. leaf blower to dry. then start and get hot. spray wd40. wipe off wd40. i am a professional mechanic

Hey Chris, great tutorial on cleaning the engine. Some guys are scared to do this but you've helped them to go on and do it by showing them how. There's a thin space between the engine and radiator that sucks in debris and causes engines to run hotter. lots of owners don't know about this and will be surprised to see how much can get in there after blowing it out. I also use a great product on my tires, interior, and engine bay. It's called 303 Aerospace protectant. Forget Armor All and its oily texture. Once the 303 dries, there's no residue and it'll remain for several months until needed again.

Night and day. Amazing how far the C5 has come. Credit for you by not being scared off by the condition it was in initially.
For those that are doing this, be advised. I sprayed my engine compartment of my 2001 a few years ago (not by this video, just doing it since it was dirty, as I had over several years of ownership) and water followed a path down the passenger side and zapped my Throttle Body Control Module (TCBM). People used to be able to buy them online from a few reputable suppliers, but they stopped stocking them. I searched for about a year, and only found kits for around $800 that included the accelerator pedal, TCBM, and throttle body. I finally found a used TCBM on eBay for $48. It was salvaged from a wrecked 2001 (same year as mine) Z06. I contacted the seller and asked him to verify the model number on the side of the housing. He did and I pulled the trigger. The housing was busted on one side so I took the time to open up the housing (I was told on Corvette Forum it couldn't be done on certain years, but mine was later) and I did it and took the board from the good one and placed it in the housing of my bad one. It was great to see the butterfly valve respond when I had my son press the accelerator! Just a word to the wise, be extremely light when you're spraying water on the engine bay. I would even advise to wet a towel or rag or whatever cloth you like and wipe things down rather than spray water, because you just never know if water will travel down the wire looms. It sucked to be without my Vette for almost a year! Your results may vary...

I don’t buy that the water zapped your TCBM. It’s a weatherproof system. More than likely it was on its way out and a total coincidence that it happened after you washed the engine bay.
@@mycorvettelife with all due respect to you, there are a bunch of guys over at CorvetteForum that would give you the details of why/ how it happens. Yes, it's supposed to be weatherproof, but over the years of aging, wear & tear, and deterioration/ degradation of the wiring, it's happened often enough to lots of people. I can't say that water actually penetrated the housing itself because by the time I did my troubleshooting and found that it was the TBCM, the water had evaporated so there was no evidence of wetness inside the box when I got it opened. But there are cases where wire sheathing can become brittle and split over time, and water penetrating those cracks in the wire can cause an electrical short and zap one of the chips on the board. And that's all the TBCM is, a bunch of integrated circuit (IC) chips. I haven't tried to find replacement chips to swap on the bad one yet, but I will eventually...
When it happened to me, I had the engine running and when the problem happened, the car idled up to around 2500 rpm and wouldn't back down, no matter what I did. It threw several codes, which told the guy who helped me what to check. I'm just sharing the information based on my experience and those experiences of a bunch of others as well. Hopefully you and others won't ever have the same experience, but I just share out of an abundance of caution. Cheers to you man, and thanks for all you post. Great channel! Mike

A little secret for free: Oven cleaner spray and a garden hose,sells for a Dollar at Dollar Tree cleans all aluminum parts and makes plastics look brand new
be careful on anodized aluminium parts because Oven cleaner can remove the anodized color or clear from the aluminum parts
I've had much success using 100% Simple Green. Once done, spray the entire engine area with a non oily protectant, then wipe off the excess.
Let us know what protectant you do use after you have clean the engine bay.
Never ever let a engine get that dirty!
Mothers Back In Black is a fantastic plastic cleaner/polish/restorer. It'll make all the plastic under the hood look brand new. I used it on my 30 year old Honda ST1100 and was pleased with the outcome.
As long as you are cleaning the engine bay...just inside the engine compartment inline with the brake fluid tank, near the firewall there are 2 in.wide by 6 in. long drain tubes. They are soft rubber with an unusual tip. Water (leaf, dirt, etc) is directed there and collects debris which causes water to backup eventually reaching the cabin. You just grab them and tug down. They have a ridge at the top end that fits into a hole. There is another one on the passenger side behind the battery. You have to pull the battery to tug this down in the same manner. This one is about 3 ft. long. Be careful with this one since it is not a single piece, but 2 pieces stapled and taped together.The air intake vent cover just below the wind screen can be removed by removing the plastic snaps (?) and pulling off the wiper blades. You will most likely need a wiper blade PULLER (like a very small gear puller) to remove the blades.Go slowly when torquing this because it could slip and scratch. I vacuumed the area inside and washed the vent and when dry, I sprayed it with "Black Magic". I'm in NC and my engine was pretty good since I bought mine from a dealer. It is a 50th Anniversary torch red hatchback. I bought it 4 years ago with 47k miles. It now has 57k miles. It is my daily driver.

Just sold my c7 and bought another c5. The c7 was a nice car but I just love the c5s for some reason. Took it straight to mafia Motorsports in iuka Mississipp, should be around 450 rwhp when they are done next week. Im thinking about procharging it this winter.
That blue brush that you use in the engine bay is excellent. It is nice and soft and with the long handle you can reach over into the hard places to get it. I had one for over 20 years.
It's like the previous owner went offroading with no hood on the Vette. Your reaction at 1:10 is priceless. Enjoy your car.

Nice. I like the Gunk Superbright Engine Cleaner. It cleans the same, but leaves a shine as well - like a new car.

I have the same reservations about spraying cleaning product and water on the coils/wiring. Otherwise, I do try to keep my engine bay clean.
Detailing brush and a 3" soft paint brush work excellent as well for engines and wheels,dry with a microfiber towel and use a detail spray to shine.

I'm working on a 1990 ZR-1 that sat for many years and the whole car is very dirty. The engine bay looks like yours maybe not as bad, but I have been through so much getting her going I'm afraid of any water, last thing I need is electrical gremlins. Sucks some folks let em go like this, I may have to try this method otherwise I will be q-tipping till doomsday. Looks so much better, nice job. 👍👍🏁
Disconnect the battery before you clean. Let dry for a good while before reconnecting the battery. You should be fine.

Im gonna have to do this myself. Just bought an 03, picking it up next week down in Virginia Beach. I doubt the dealer will have cleaned the engine.
Chris, another hint is on the final clean use tire foam instead of Super Clean. This leaves a new looking finish to all the parts especially the rubber hoses etc. Tire Foam advertises cleaning and conditioning and you don’t need to rinse.
I am a C5 fan also and have owed C3s in the past. Watch some of the better detail videos online and with a good buffer and some able Greene you will make the paint look great. I am presently looking for a C5 FRC Z06 as my next Corvette.

Chris just watching this Video for the first time. Maybe you already invested in one by now since this video is from 2017 I believe I saw. Get yourself a nice Compressor for your garage. I got my first one during the late 60’s a Sears 1hp belt driven the only kind you should want to buy even today (Belt Driven). I still have it believe it or not plus 2 others. I have a 80 Gallon 5hp In my Pole Barn. With he compressor hose and blow gun tip you could of gotten in places with a blast of air to blow some of that grease off still showing. A Leaf 🍁 blower doesn’t cut it a compressor would of been the thing to use. Back in the day we used the Gunk brand of Engine Cleaner just to mention. It was the best back then.

Good job and a very good video Chris,.. but the battery should be removed, to clean the tray under under the battery. Also because the water and dirt underside the battery and tray will still be there. - Always disconnect and remove the battery first, and then clean and dry it before re instlling the battery : )
I agree that I would remove the battery. Don’t want to take any chance of Water possibly coming in contact with the positive and negative at one time. Just a precaution, so I myself would remove the battery also

You see both results a tell by your self this is using oily grease product but chrisfix dont he only use soapy water for the engine yes you will work harder but look to both results even though chrisfix way is safer every one has a brain and can decide
That much dirt in the engine bay would have made me pass this one by. Too many good Corvettes out there, it is a buyer's market today so you can wait till you get the one you want.

In the 1990s I would take my 5.0 Mustang to the spray car wash and spray the engine. Id get down deep by the injectors and never had a problem. Dont think i would do that with my C6. Corvetts seem delicate.
Just a steam cleaner. Nothing else. Then maybe a quick rinse for any small loose debris

Informative video. One thing I would recommend is to place several layers of corrugated cardboard down underneath the engine bay. Just take four, five, six cardboard boxes (depending on their size) that are so common these days, break them down, and spread them out underneath the engine. Then, after you've cleaned the engine, and allowed the cardboard to thoroughly dry, you can throw them in your household trash sealed in a plastic bag. Or, you can burn them out in the country where there are no burn bans.
The reason you had all that dirt is because the C5 allows dirt to come in under the hood, you can prevent this by purchasing a weather strip for the front of the hood, it keeps dirt out and you cant see the strip.
This car had that strip installed. This is just lack of care by the previous owner.

Good job! A clean motor and engine bay always makes them run cooler. You might want to finish the plastic and rubber hose bits with a light Armoral soaked rag by hand for an increased detail, especially in the hard to reach spots. at the end you could also use some compressed air(low pressure) to blow/dry water from tight spots. Great job.

Haven't seen an engine that filthy before? You should see the 92 I just picked up, I'm not sure that engine has really been washed either.
Make a video cleaning the suspension and undercarriage. Use commercial grade aviation aluminum/plastic cleaner, "Simple Green 13406 Extreme Aircraft and Precision Cleaner"..... with a pressure washer.
Btw. Great job on the engine.

by your description of rebuilt engine and trans along with how unusually dirty the engine compartment was, this looks a whole lot like a flood vehicle that the owner did not report. Cars loose a lot of value now with the regular use of car fax! but with everything you got for your dollar, you did fine! and the enjoyment of driving your car (like you said) would be hard to find elsewhere at that price!
I don't think that is the case. Engine was rebuilt 2 owners ago. Trans was just rebuilt last year. The car doesn't have any electrical issues that I have come across yet. It was a daily driver in Virginia, so that is why it was so dirty. He also drove it from Virginia to California.
I watched your C4 engine cleaning video, then this. Would you use the the same cleaning products on your C4 that you used on your C5??
Love the channel. It's inspired me to start planning on some projects of my own on my recent C5 purchase. Do you ever spray degreaser on the front of the engine? When I bought my C5, the previous owner didn't clean up the mess from an old oil leak and power steering leak. You can imagine it's all over the front of the engine. I was thinking I would probably have to take the belt off to avoid all that oily gunk from getting all over the belt. My main reason is that I want to make sure the leaks were actually fixed.

Has anyone tried ceramic coating engine parts,plastic covers,etc? Seems it would work and make easier to clean.I have used spray waxes and detail spray which works well.Ive seen ceramic coating used on paint,interior and wheels so pretty sure it would work in engine compartment pieces.

The car currently has about 116,000 miles on the odo. I do have most of the maintenance history from at least the last owner. The oil was changed just prior to me buying the car, but I'll probably have it changed again just as a precaution. Monday's video will give some more details, stay tuned!

If you take and spray a light coat of tire foam from armor all over the whole compartment it will look showroom new.
You could do that in 5 minutes... ask any detailer. Like me the right apc a rinse and dress

They were on the car when I bought it, however I have since changed them. Any vinyl shop can do them.
