A really helpful breakdown of the different methods! The illusion of depth has always been a neat trick for immersion. I hope to include more AE effects myself… and maybe mapping as well! But that would be a bit down the line.
One thing this doesn't really cover is painting your backgrounds in a way that implies movement. Yes, you do show linear pans, but I'm talking about having the perspective changes baked into a shot. zoomed all the way out, it looks quite distorted, but once you pan a smaller portion of the frame, it all makes sense. they used this a lot in looney tunes and can be hard to plan out, so maybe that's why it was left out, but its a very effective way of doing things without 3d projection that does more than a simple pan along one axis would do. it emulates a pan and a tilt at the same time.
This is so helpful, thank you!!
What editing or compositing software do you use? I'm trying to do the panning background but I'm struggling to make jt smooth and not jumping with my frames
An example of painting the background each frame could be something like the “wolf vision” scene from Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers. From what I gather, the environments are laboriously hand drawn to simulate what wolves would see as they run through the forest. ua-cam.com/video/rOU4K4cV-Dk/v-deo.html
Yeah Cool. "The wind rises" had a few shots like that too. Would have loved to include some examples but don't wanna add copyrighted material in the video.
Instead of doing most of your 2D painting in one tool, and then bringing it into a 3D tool to map it into 3D space, how about using a 3D tool that also includes 2D painting functionality? Blender has this, with its “Grease Pencil” feature. Only, instead of the brush strokes being confined to a flat canvas, they are placed in mid-air.
And they are animatable.
I think he already said why he doesn't blender
Long shot but do you know if 2d animation can be imported into Blender? Like can I import my drawings framed by frame?
How to export camera moves in Adobe animate 😢😢😢 for compositing in after effects????
Your account has gotten me out of so many jams, thank you. Sometimes I choose your videos over my own institutions recorded lectures 😂
Thank you for this video! It came just in time. Why didn’t I know you had a Patreon? 😭 definitely going to subscribe to enhance my own animation process 🙌✨
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Thanks Dave!
Great work.
It's blender...?
3:35 😳😳 that’s cool…
Wow thank you
Thank you!
How do you emulate that handheld camera feel at 2:35 ?
its an expression
you can use a random wiggle expression on after effects, so it looks erratic as a handheld camera shot would
