This is the first version of this song that I heard, and I think it's the most beautiful one. Superb. It's on the 2001 album An Séo by Ragús. I live in Gloucester, Massachusetts where the sculpture shown here is located. I live on Portuguese Hill overlooking the inner harbor, and the view from my front window is of two large blue herring trawlers owned and operated by an O'Neill family from Killybegs, Donegal. I sang this at a local Irish music session about fifteen years ago, and right after I finished a man came up to me and earnestly asked, "Where'd you get that song?! I was a boy of ten standing on the quay when they brought the bodies of the men to shore, and my father was on the search vessel bringing them in!"
This was written by Paddy McGlynn, Brockagh, Cloghan, Co Donegal- in memory of the Evelyn Marie ….. 7/01/1975 - 50th Anniversary on Tuesday last. RIP 🙏
thanks so much for posting this!!! I saw Ragus in Ireland in 2003 on Inishmore and bought their cd with this song. Lost it years ago, and always missed this song. Thanks a million! I can't thank you enough!
This song was on the Ragus cd I got. I don't think the singer was with the band though. Could be wrong. I saw them again at Irish Fest in Milwaukee a few years later, and they didn't have this lady singing there either.
This monument is in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where I live and overlooks Gloucester Harbor. It's called 'The Man at the Wheel' and was dedicated in 1923 at the time of Gloucester's 300th. It was rededicated last year for the 400th. The sculptor was Leonard Craske.

My mom's name was Evelyn Marie. And, she loved to sing. I miss hearing her voice.

From what I can tell, the singer is Aileen O'Connor, All-Ireland ballad singer from County Roscommon.
Why isn't this song not famous except for in Ireland?
actually one of the guys sang this song, but this version was on their CD
