Alec Steele Blacksmith 2019
Will is interesting and talented enough that he could have had his own channel with tons of viewers, but with he and Alec on the same channel this is just a powerhouse of a channel.
DO NOT give them ideas!!
They are perfect for each other
I have been telling will on Instagram to do his own thing. he would make way more money.
I actually had assumed they were a couple 😬
You clearly don’t know him then lol he did before, he did his own this and then joined Alec!
Props to whoever edited this, awesome when the hammer was synchronized with the music!
Jamie always does that. He is very good at what he does.
@Dogurasu I really don't care WHAT style he prefers... he DOES mix them up some, and he always edits perfectly to the background music. (I think that's one of the reasons he uses so much hip-hop... the beats tend to be simple and prominent.)
Watch Steele's older videos it is a signature of his video.
As Ze Frank would say, “That’s how the Jaime do.“
They do that like in every episode. Its rlly nice
This may be one of the most impressive patterns produced on their channel. Damascus, feather-pattern, lemon-shapes. Stelter is 100% beast-mode.
"We'll be able to block out all oxygen and get a perfect weld...probably!" You know, you guys do your best work when you're indulging in this kind of special madness. Steele and Stelter, specializing in blades featuring $10 worth of materials and $195 billion in labour. My hat is off to you.
KInda like Kyle Royer, at least when it comes to the steel he uses. Obviously he is above and beyond when it comes to fit and finish and attention to the most minute of details, but he also makes the same basic knife a million times, so he has way more time to optimize and perfect each and every little detail and step. But stil, I hope you get what I want to say, that being, you are absolutely right!
whats yor take on calling this steel damascus? im certain he isnt sourcing his ore from the middle east and that it isnt a crucible steel with a specific set of minerals in the proper per portions to call this damascus they do make fome nice pattern welded steel though
@@mobiousenigma Damascus steel is widely understood as layering different steels. Usually high nickel/high carbon. Arguing otherwise is unecessary semantics. Yes, historically, Damascus steel refers to steel made in Damas and whatnot, nobody cares but historians and people trying to show off, really.
@@ailurusfulgens1849 Yeah this is now definitely considered Damascus steel but even though I'm no historian in the slightest, I still find it interesting how they made and refined their steel long before we were able to just buy what we want!
@@mobiousenigma It's absolutely correct to refer to pattern-welded steel as Damascus steel.
At this point Will is the perfect criminal as he no longer has any fingerprints left...
This should be a spectacular pattern. I miss these and I'm glad Will is getting to try his 3-year dream.
4:23 Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy. Not sure you noticed what you did there.
!!!!! Nice, catch...
I see the cut in the footage but what am I missing?!
@@sturankin8678 Lemon-shaped pieces, squeezed together.
I don’t get it...
I figured someone else would catch that. Lemon shaped squeeze dies!
I feel like with Damascus the difference between a 96% cool pattern and a 100% cool pattern is about a 10x increase in labour and skill. Very cool idea. Look forward to seeing how it turns out.
Not going to lie it was a little bit shocking how productive this video was when Will was doing all the work.
Will’s welding hood:
“Knock knock
Who’s there?
I’m bad at welding” 😂
10:22 for anyone wondering lol
"Welder I hardly know"
I saw that too. They have a great sense of humor!
Great to see someone doing some "Whack Whack" for a change. The channel has changed so much over the years I kind of miss the old days.
Can we take a minute to again praise Jamiee on his music-to-hammerblow synchronisation.. awesome.
And Will, your correct use of the term "mil" when talking metric is refreshing, and I see you have a metric ruler as well..
welcome to the right side.. 😉😆
And the award for " Most cinematic tightening of an abrasive sander nut goes to..."
Seriously, every little shot you folks do is awesome...and appreciated!
Amazing work by the whole team. Great to see Will getting bit hard by the Damascus bug as well. 😁
5:30 If you find a way to attach a replacement welding lens in front of your camera it should get rid pf the lines that appear on screen and hopefully be able to get better shots. Love the videos and happy to see a chefs knife. In a chef by trade and love seeing any kitchen knifes.
I kind of like the lines - gives it a badass grungy vibe
the lines are actually the shutter moving down the sensor combined with the strobing of the weld. A higher frame rate might help but really not an easy thing to film.
i liked it, it seemed synchronized to the music..
With most cameras you can make the shutter speed quick enough to actually watch the bead of the weld but idk if that's really what they're going for here. Would get wayy too many backseat welders I reckon
It’s amazing how you have created a new pattern and really inspiring to beginners like myself! Awesome work yet again!! Can’t wait to see the results. It was you guys who inspired me to first pick up a hammer and now I have made my first Damascus knife a few weeks ago!! Thank you!!!!
That may be the most beautiful and elegant pattern of Damascus I've ever seen. Great work, Will! High quality, man. High quality.
Could you guys do a workshop tour? It's always interesting to see how the shop has grown since a previous tour.
This is some top-notch content right here! Takes me back to the early days of the channel when Alec was forging crazy US flag damascus in that old workshop in Norwich.
I'm glad to see will being himself, not trying to be like alec. Your passion for this project is refreshing instead of being like omg wtf did alec get me into, and why isn't he hand sanding... lol good to have you back will!
In my oppinion this is the best Jamies edit to date. He made an amazing episode.
And I can't wait to see the finished product. I know it will be beautifull
Looks like Will is going to do another awesome pattern💪💪
Finding something beautiful made with one material and thinking 'I can do that with my material.' Is the best feeling
I'm really glad Will is finally showing his chef knife skills. If I remember correctly that's what he was selling and making predominantly before he joined Alec, and while a massive zweihander or a crazy blade with gold inlay and diamonds is a true spectacle, a chef knife is something everyone will own at some point. It'd truly be a dream to own a custom hand-made chef knife, but I personally would never drop cash on something like a large sword
That is some Master Craftsman work Will! Please make a damascus pattern mini series. Love the content guys, great work
Ladies and gentlemen, this is where the legend of the Damascus Steel was born. By two of the best future hall of fame blacksmiths.
This episode really show your love as a craftsman to your cruft. Did you really hold this all process in your head for three years? That impressive.
Also, the editing is just great, especially on this one. Good job!!
Fantastic editing, just keeps getting better and better! Love the way the music matches up perfectly with the montage cuts
I love the raw sounds at 11:26 - 11:50
As 'epic' as the music can be, sometimes is so nice to just hear some forging
Hats to the editing and music on this one. Your editing is usually amazing, but this one was on a whole new level!
This is the most complex billet building I've ever seen on UA-cam. Excited to see the "kickass" chefs knife:)
I don't care how many episodes this takes. I love seeing so much of the process. Thanks guys. Amazing talent in the forging and editing.
My first thought on realizing what Will was up to was to be reminded of the Tessellation patterns of artist MC Escher. For instance his "Day and Night" could be translated into a super interesting pattern using two different steels of opposite colors.
Anyway, this is a very cool project and i can't wait to see the finished project.
That would be awesome. The National Gallery of Canada had a huge Escher exhibition about 15 years ago. It was amazing. Some of the work was 40 feet long.
I am so stoked for this series. I absolutely love ambitious Damascus projects.
This channel grew so much. And I say it again, Will is an absolute win for it.
Dude...just dude. This is absolutely awesome. I cannot believe how talented Will is.
I sure hope the forge weld works out without any cold-shuts. That will make a beautiful pattern. Can't wait, I'll have to go watch this whole series back to back. Glad I didn't watch as it was posted, I didn't have to wait and wonder.
The videography and editing are TIGHT. Absolutely killed it.
I love it when Will shows off his mad skills! Very excited to see how this pattern turns out!
Once again, the editing is just off the hook, awesome job Jamie!! This is going to be such a cool blade Will. Looking forward to the finished product!
14:21 Ah yes, the forbidden lemonade with ice cubes
Underrated. lol
One thing I did notice, and liked very much, how the editor can make anyone look spectacular
The drumbeat/ hammer strike sequence is sick!
Yooooo that transition at 10:47 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾 clean, on beat, in physical rhythm 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Jamie back at it again with the fire edits! Always feels like a music video when he's at the helm.
"Knock knock" "who's there?" "I'm bad at welding". Related to that
I saw that!
That steel looks awesome. The music is on point. I started dancing in my chair with the more upbeat music. Well done Jamie.
This is so relaxing to me and idk why, the amount of times I’ve just fallen asleep while watching Alec and Will make some sick stuff
Will is an amazing young man. I love his enthusiasm and creativity. I can’t wait to see the finished product.
I love the different styles of music you choose to support the visuals in your vids
Thank you Will for telling the measurements in the metric system ❤️
I love chef knives
Need more of that
Exactly! I'm so excited to see an interesting project out of these guys.
Been kinda obsessed with a new chef's knife this week, perfect timing!
If you're Into good quality knives try Konosuke, Masakagi or Fujiwera, they each make some very nice blades, all hand made by master craftsmen. I have a few and they are superb. Better than any Western made blades I've held.
I can see why you have wanted to do this pattern for some while! Just the preparation is so different! Can't wait to see the end result.
This is the best blokes channel on youtube, you deserve 2 million subscribers without a doubt.
I am personally more excited about this project than any of the preceding Montana-based projects you guys have done. That pattern is going to be amazing...
I feel the need totake a minute to appreciate how much work it is to edit these videos! It's simply amazing!
Headed out to the forge... this, is going on the list of must try!! Cannot WAIT to see this finished
100% agree
Need to make a whole set, blade sheaths, make a soft leather knife roll, and sell them. What a great series that would be.
I would come here just for the sound track and the editing, having amazing craftsmanship to watch as well makes it out of this world.
I'm so excited to finally see Will make a kitchen knife!
You perhaps visited Il Papiro Firenze in Florence? My family went there last year, and we spent quite a lot of time in that place, talking with the artist, watching his process, and then buying several things more than intended. That’s a good inspiration to pull damascus patterns from, well done sir.
The amount of effort to get this pattern looking like it does is just blowing my mind.
16:07 you can tell by Will's hair that he's been working with Alec
Grognack enjoys your videos, Grognack thinks this one will be good too. Grognack wishes for you to continue making cool things for your fellow mortals, and occasionally Grognack.
Dillon agrees.
Grognack sounds like he's sweet talking to get a new warhammer eh? ;)
Putting those pieces together to form the square must have been so satisfying
That knife is going to look so beautiful! Just one of those pieces already looks so awesome! Great job, Will!
This is exciting!
I love watching the process, and can’t wait to see the finished blade.
Who else thinks Alex and will should do no shave November? Would be interesting to say the least🙄🙄
The production quality of your videos keeps getting better and better. Keep up the good work, your team is amazing. Thank you for providing such great information and entertainment. Cheers!
One of the best edited videos I’ve seen on UA-cam! I love the content too! Very excited for this knife!
Alec told us long ago that you used to make chef's knives for a living, I have been hoping to see you do it ever sense.
The quality of the videos and editing was always on top level. On this video i think the work of the camera, focus and all is on a new level 🙏. Editing still on top as usual
Love the creative speed wrench use with the bandsaw!
This is SO FREAKING COOL.... I cannot get over how cool this is......... way to go Will!!
At 16:08 wils hair looks alot like alecs old crazy hair hahaha they merging into one person 😂😂
I have zero experience with blacksmithing or bladesmithing, but I am on the edge of my seat to see how this pattern turns out.
Still can not get over the paint job on that power hammer. It has to be the coolest one so far.
I couldn't believe how much steel you were using but then you ground off about 70% cleaning it up. Worth it for the pattern you will get.
Can't wait for Making A Chef's Knife Part 47.
i have no idea what they're doing 90% of the time but i like it
I think this is some of Will's most impressive work to date...and it's not even finished!
"boys, the lathe is falling apart"
Alec: "no worries!" *Busts out the hot pink duct tape
Was expecting to see you with Tomer from Florentine Kitchen Knives when
I saw the title.
A collab with Tomer finishing the handle with his stacked rings would be amazing.
The amount of work and dedication you guys put into your projects is just amazing! Keep up the beautiful work!
15:53 "margin of gapage"
Put that on a T-Shirt😂
Such a cool design, Will! Glad you're finally getting to bring it to reality!
I love this editor! The syncing is amazing
This concept is just so sick!! Seriously looking forward to the finished blade!!
Loved this video. It reminded me of why I subscribed to begin with (I don't need the shenanigans to be entertained when this level of talent and vision is on display). Keep it up, gents!
Truly some of the best editing on the platform!!!!
You know what I love about your channel? That you got into blade work and fun stuff like that, but you DIDN'T fall into the trap of making gigantic anime swords or the Zelda master sword or any number of other common traps that so many other smithing channels fall into. You come here and it might be a sabre, or it might be a pair of gold rings. Or a titanium anvil. Anyway, keep it up, it's awesome.
I haven’t been a fan of any of bike building videos, you kinda lost me there, but this mosaic is very cool! Can’t wait to see how it turns out and how you’re gonna compress that on the power hammer. Lots of work on the edge to get them all to forge weld so curious if you’ll have issues. Good luck!
So ever since i saw my first alec steele video, ive been working on building a forge an anvil, etc. So i could try it. Made some dumb things, just playing around, getting the feel for it. First knife i try making: was forming the tip of the blade and i was impressed with how it was turning out. Struck it just right. Slipped out of my vise grips, launched straight up and went directly under my safety glasses and right into my eye. 800° is hot enough to burn through your eyelid in couple a milliseconds. Didnt pop my eyeball though. Its healed now and i just finished the knife before i sat sown to watch this video. After buying some very high quality form fitted goggles, of course.
The creativity you guys showed is inspirational! Great work
Some great music and editing on this video!
Love the return to Damascus and always love watching Will make a chef’s knife. So glad to see this passion from three whole years coming to fruition :)
Damn it! Left me hangin! I should be used to it by now, but this pattern is so amazing I just can’t wait to see it! Well done Will! Or, just Will done. Says it all.
Forged in fire wishes they had this level of cinematography. Best video yet I like the new direction 👌
Behold, the young but awesome young Blade-smith called Will Stelter, fresh off of whooping the crap off of Mr Alec Steele at most all the VS’s challenges here he is to show us all his continuing awesomeness at making not only an awesome chefs knife but also a knife that, if you may be unfortunate to try to rob in the dead of night. He will thrust you through with a beautiful knife, unless he shoots you first because, damn he’s good.
"easy peasy lemon squeezy" did he actually say that making a lemon-shaped swage block? To the stockade for that man!
That is some ambitious Damascus!! Stoked for the next episode.
