    Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 23 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

    I just went through my bookshelves and mine is filled with mostly books I haven't read which I found really surprising. I guess I am more apt to get rid of a book I've read and moved on from than the potential of an unread read

    I work at a thrift store and it’s actually better to sell what you can because they’re more likely to end up with someone than end up in a landfill. Thrift stores do what they can but not as much ends up on the sales floor as you might think

    Since I rarely re-read, I'm more likely to keep unread books. However, sometimes a book has been around too long unread, that I almost feel resentful towards it. The guilt isn't worth it so I will give it away,

    You know, I take my unhauled books to the charity. Sure, I paid for these books and now I'm just giving them away for free. But it's easier this way. Selling books to the used books store or the library is just too much hassle and it takes time. But with charity, you just drop them off and you're done. You're instantly free. And it doesn't bother me that I didn't "make" any money during this. That's life you know, money comes and goes. But you did support the authors and that's the main thing that matters, I think 🙂

    "I can remember Bertrand Russell telling me of a horrible dream. He was in the top floor of the University Library, about A.D. 2100. A library assistant was going round the shelves carrying an enormous bucket, taking down books, glancing at them, restoring them to the shelves or dumping them into the bucket. At last he came to three large volumes which Russell could recognize as the last surviving copy of _Principia Mathematica._ He took down one of the volumes, turned over a few pages, seemed puzzled for a moment by the curious symbolism, closed the volume, balanced it in his hand and hesitated...."

    I am terrible at getting rid of books... I love being surrounded by them and I would love to have a house full of books later in my life. I do absolutely love your idea of having a bookshelf that reflects who you are! I might use that idea for like a particular bookshelf with books that are special to me :)
    Also wanted to let you know that I bought The Bone Season in Dutch first and later (when the second book came out) bought it in English so I could continue the series and I personally enjoyed the English version more :)

  • @LibraryFairy762
    @LibraryFairy762 3 роки тому +2

    I am ABSOLUTELY also on the train of "my bookshelves should reflect myself" - like my bookshelves are how I decorate any given room. I'm usually terrible at wall art or coordinating throw pillows or other such. The bookshelf, though?? Beautiful. I am getting to the point where i need to take a serious look at the books that I have and reconsider their place in my life again. Eventually, things just start overflowing. (also, entirely unrelated, but the sleeves on that jacket shirt thing you're wearing in the last shot are giving me LIFE)

    I sold/gave away almost all my books about two months ago because I moved to university and wouldn't have space in my dorm. So I thought that It'd be the perfect opportunity to get rid of old books. It was really freeing!! Now I only keep books I can see myself rereading at some point and store those in my shelves in my room in my parent's house, bringing them back there whenever I go back home and selling the others.

    The intrigue! The character development! This was so interesting to watch, really. I really liked following your entire process, and also what you did to the books you unhauled. I personally can’t ever bring myself to unhaul an unread book - I’ve already put money on it, so I’m not getting rid of it before reading it to the end 😂 and I keep most books I’ve already read, unless I really dislike them or feel super indifferent toward them (but that’s not that common, since I’m very good at predicting whether or not I’m gonna like a certain book). Great video!

    i really really loved this video! as someone who loves reading, but also minimalism, it kind of surprises me how many books some booktubers have. like, 400 books easily, but it’s more to like show them off and use as a background than actual value. i really liked your approach to it (have just what makes you happy), because that’s kind of what i’m trying to do with my bookshelves as well, and it’s nice to see it more in other avid readers as well. keep up the great videos! ✨✨❤️

    I appreciate the Mucha prints you've got decorating your room and the overall chaotic unhaul style. Personally when I look at your bookshelf I see tonnes of unutilised space, but then again I am the type of person that tries to cram as many books as possible into their bookshelves, only paying attention to the genre/theme of each shelf. I have fantasy shelves, classic literature / poetry shelves, philosophy / theology shelves and history shelves. I will unashamedly stack books haphazardly so long as they fit on a particular themed shelf.

    I feel you lots in this video. The first time I had to let go of my books, I had tons of trouble. I also probably cried a lot but I forgot hahaha. My family moved like 6 times, so 6 times I had to get rid of books. Spaces shrunk, as well as the bookshelves. Strangely enough, I don't miss any of the books I gave away, mainly because I know the people that got them are putting them to good use, and also my very small bookshelf right now still has space, so I can still try new books. I also felt bad giving away books that were gifted to me, but again, if it doesn't mean anything to me anymore, I have to let it go. If I look at my bookshelf and spot something that doesn't make me happy, I'll happily give it away to people who would enjoy them more. Hopefully this unhaul made you realize lots of things, the way mine made me realize certain things too!

    I konmari’d my books two years ago and my remaining books have been living in my closet since then. I just ordered a new bookcase (I should mention I also konmari’d most of my furniture and thought long and hard about what to replace and how) and it’ll be interesting to see if I end up missing any of the books I recycled when I move everything to the new bookcase next month. It’s so hard to let go of books though... they represent either part of you (because you’ve read them, so they’re now part of you) or huge potential (because you haven’t read them, and what if that one book you failed to read is THE book that could have changed your life?).

    I hope this is viewed as a compliment, but I have to say my honest thoughts. I sometimes thought in my past that I had an existential crisis, but the more serious life's problems become with age I just think you (girl in the video) don't look like you are old enough to have an existential crisis. Maybe "an existential crisis" could be a temporary one, like something that goes away without noticing. But a real one is probably an "existential depression". I started to have one, and am still going through it ever since I experience a cancer from which I almost didn't recover. Now I have PTSD from the whole idea that I may not have made it and a paranoid fear of many things. On top of that it is a permanent confusion as to what to spend my time on since it is difficult to at the same time be reminded of my own mortality and to imagine a real goal to which to direct my actions and choices.
