My grandpa was a university professor and he always said “university is an education, not job training”, you’re not supposed to know what you want to do yet, those that do, usually burn out or are faced with disappointment. and I appreciated that as I navigate my 20s
Unless there’s something you’re really clear and passionate about (which I don’t think most people have), I think it’s way more important to determine what you want your days to look like rather than what you want to do or be. Do you like a 9-5 where you can leave the office at the office or do you need flexibility, will it drive you mad to sit in front of a computer all day, do you want to work closely with others or work independently, etc. In my experience it’s less the topic and more the day to day that makes a good or bad job (and the coworkers). I’m 38 and still don’t know what I want to be- but I’ve found it’s what you do with your every day that makes a job for me or not.
This is very true and I wish this concept was discussed when I was in high school - I’m almost 28 now (we just had our 10 year reunion from high school) and I went into studying teaching after school and then of course working as a teacher and already I feel myself burning out… I’m having what I call my grown up gap year next year where I work casually and start to finally write a book 📖 because I am sick of the school system and the lack of work life balance when you work full time. You’ve hit the nail on the head about organising your life by what you want your days (which is what life is made of!) to be like 😊
I graduated with 30+, imagine my crisis! I know many of you don't feel like it but you have time, time to learn, grow, try things out. Also: everything, absolutely every single thing of the oftentimes seemingly unconnected things I did throughout the years served me so, so well at some point AND made total sense! Looking back the weirdest encounters and interests are somewhat connected to what I do now. Now go and weave your own stories, one step at a time.
I was closer to 40 than 30 when I graduated, and I had made more than a few attempts at an undergraduate degree before I got mine in 2010. In essence I had a 12ish year gap year, which is a bit too long. I would say that I did learn many things along the way that allows me to adapt to my life now. Making the right choices became important to me as a necessity somewhere probably much later than it should have. However, now that I can see the effects of that, I know taking the time to choose correctly is well worth the wait. I definitely would not wait 12 years to think longer about my choices again.
@@liamwhalen Hi Liam, well, that's understandable. A gap decade so to speak! Ultimately it's all just about living life (sometimes somehow), but I wish I hadn't been so anxious about the future all the time. I still am, but for better reasons hahaha...
Hey Leonie, I just wanted to let you know that I really really enjoy the videos you have been putting up recently. I feel like now that you have graduated it seems you have more time to put more creative ideas into the making of your videos which is really cool :) Don't be stressed about what job you will work on later just enjoy the time in the present for now. Hopefully you'll get to read lots of good books!
Hey Leonie! I think it's quite rare when people know what to do straight after graduation. The thing that helped me was starting to work full time during my final year and learning what I like and what I'm good at (and what brings enough money, tbh)) Wasn't like I've understood it straight away, but eventually got it) Also, in case it helps - a lot of people that I know agree that 20-23 are one of the least pleasant years emotionally, a lot of stress, a lot of feelings of "Hey, I'm adult now, I need to know what to do". The good thing is it gets better. Sounds cliche but it really does.
I relate to this so much. I'm planning to graduate next spring and then the education I've been working on for years is done (I'm 27 and started at 19). I did study to become a teacher and did a year long internship at school but then I realized that that kind of working environment isn't for me as an over stressing introvert, I'd burn out so fast. To be honest, I'd love to get a new education and do coding or maybe become a librarian. Who knows. I'm pretty lost and it felt comforting to listen to you talking about your own feelings of not knowing what you want to do next. Thank you for the video
I also didn't know what I wanted to do for a living and I got a job related to what I studied because it was available and 15 years later I'm still doing it. Is it my passion? No, but I learned it didn't need to be. I struggled deciding what to do and study because I have so many interests. But job doesn't have to be any of that. What makes it fulfilling is that I take pride in doing a good job and working with my team to deliver a quality product. Turns out, it's all you need. 💜
The older I get (and I'm 28 so not that old), the more I realize that very few people know what they want to do with their lives. Each job I've had since university has been helpful in helping me find the elements of a job that I enjoy and those I don't. You may feel a bit directionless, but learning through experience what you don't like in a job is so valuable for learning what you are looking for 😊
Thank you for this video, it felt very comforting to watch! I graduated from university with my master's degree at the end of July and I've been job searching ever since. I've felt very anxious and uncertain about my future, and focusing on things like giving my days structure, making little changes to my living space and taking the time to do things I enjoy has helped.
It's been a couple years since I've graduated from university and I'm still figuring it out! After graduation is the time to try things and see what speaks to you and what doesn't. There are many potential career paths I thought I would like that it turns out I really didn't, so don't be afraid to change your plans! Experiment! We are all on our own journeys :)
I think that: More do you work in your area (and another thinks in the middle), then more you understand what do you want to do and what you don't want. Two years (now) after my graduation, I feel more connected with my life, career and my choices! Love your video ♥
I think the couch looks great! At least on camera, the green of the plaids is strenghtened by the plants around it. And the texture makes the whole couch look a bit more "grown up" than the fleece blankets. And very true, watching someone else tackle some things in their life makes me feel like maybe I can do that too! Anyway, another lovely video :)
I started watching this with a headache made of anxiety and now I'm relaxed and ready to keep doing my homework. Your videos are always a beautiful gift :)
You're an inspiration! I'm late 30s and still have no idea what I want to do with my life! lol. I hope you figure it out, but in the meantime you create beautiful and relatable content for the rest of us! Have a great week, Leonie! 🙂
I graduated with a Psychology degree about 17 years ago. I'm 46, and I now have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in film. lol I'm still working on growing my "film career" but it's not at all a must to stay with your degree. There is so much you can do with it that you may not think is related to your degree. Just remember life is so long and we change as people over time. It's perfectly okay not to know what to do or go completely in a different direction in life, and you can always change your course if you want to. I know you will succeed in whatever you choose to do. :)
I have that monitor stand too on my workstation and it's life changing. Your back and neck will really thank you. Plus it makes the space look infinitely tidier.
I've volunteered for a NGO a few years ago for an entire month, it was kinda of a coincidence and just maybe the universe throwing something that I really needed at the time. My dad had recently passed away and he worked with the NOG Terre des Hommes in Brazil and they had some partnership with another organizations who at the time needed some translator to spent a month doing trips on the Amazon river with US health students. So I went and it was amazing! And now I've a full time job and never worked with a NOG again, watching you made me want to search for something that I can do at least on the weekends bc that's when I'm free. So thank you for that and thank you for always recommending great books. ❤️
I love these types of videos especially right now! My thesis is due in about two weeks and I’ve been working on it like crazy. Seeing your video on when you were finishing your thesis and now life after thesis is really inspiring and motivating, so thank you! ❤️🙏🏻 now I’m also inspired to do some little changes in my space to bring some new life into it. I also just wanted to say that I love how calm your videos are. They are my Sunday evening treat to relax and get ready for Monday, so thank you for that as well!
Thank you so much for this video Leonie. I didn’t know how much I needed this. I’m still in university, I have so much work to do and I’m also moving out with my boyfriend - I feel exhausted all the time. But I realised the blame is on all of my unhealthy habits that keep me up at night. With your video, I feel like I breathed for the first time in months and made myself a little list of priorities, and even things to do when I’m having a panic attack. I love your videos because you aren’t preaching a « new way to live » or « 20 magic advice to feel better ». You just experiment and share the process with us. It feels so wholesome ! Watching your videos has always been like a warm blanket on a cold day. Sometimes when you feel lost, take a minute to realise you’re right there. And that’s already enough. ❤️
I can absolutely relate to how you feel. Although I have not graduated University yet, i feel completely lost with what I want to do or pursue. I wish you the best Leonie :)
The quote at the begining and your life update was exactly what I needed atm. I'm currently writing my bachelor thesis and I'm quite anxious about what to do after...
hi leo, i would love to hear about your studies, what you originally wanted to do before starting and what you think of doing next :) glad to see you here btw!
Hi, Leonie! I was having the worst day, feeling so useless, and your video helped me a lot! Now I want to do a list and put some effort into small tasks that have been sitting there for a while! ❤ thanks from Brazil 🇧🇷
Just love those vlogs! Please do more of that stuff if you also like doing them ;) I am in a pretty stressful situation right now and your vlog really just helped me to relax and calm down. Thanks a lot!
Watched this as I organized my room and working area! Perfect timing! ♥️😂 I'm really happy that you're enjoying Jane Eyre. It's one of my favorite classics!
Just like you, I graduated about a month ago and I absolutely don't know what to do next. My relatives are urging me to find a job quickly but I'm not ready to say goodbye to this huge chapter of my life yet, if that makes sense ^^ At the moment, I just want to enjoy the freedom of not having any university or professional obligations and focus on the people I love and my passions for reading and hiking while also doing other useful things like learning new skills for instance ♥
Thing about careers is that to get to the desired end point there must be stepping stones to get onto. The only way to do that is to get that first job. It may not be ideally the best choice but sometimes the least ideal job may end up being the most rewarding. By reward, one doesn't mean economic prosperity but instead rewarding in terms of experience, training and value to your future career.
Sou brasileira e estou apaixonada nos seus vídeos Estou terminando a faculdade também, mesmo sentimento de 'perdida' A delicadeza e sinceridade que encontrei no teu canal fazem ele ser o meu momentinho de aconchego Thank you for this video! I needed more that I imagine.
I also read while lying in bed, right before sleeping! I feel like the Pavlovian thing hasn't really set in with me since i was used to watching youtube videos until late at night, so then when i started reading i would just keep reading for a WHILE. Like, when i was reading the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle i tore through ~100 pages in a single night on multiple occasions heh
I'm in my last year of university and I relate to a lot of things you say ♥ Thanks for this vlog, I decided a few days ago to get my life together so this is perfect timing !
So glad I'm not the only one falling asleep while I read in the afternoon on the weekend because I read at night during the week. 😅 Love your videos! 🧡💚
Thank you for talking about that, I just graduated Uni with my master's degree and I'm quite lost, I don't really know what to do or which direction to go for. Thank you for normalizing this feeling in your video ☺
hi! :) just wanted to thank you for this video. as a 24 year old who will receive her master's (hopefully) at the end of this academic year this video made me feel a bit more at ease :). doing this master's as well as trying to figure out what i want to do with my life has brought on lots of anxiety, but it's comforting to see others go through the same thing. thank you for your vulnerability!
As someone who graduated a few years ago (just realised it was 6 years ago now, eek!) I also didn't know what I wanted to do. I remember feeling this strange juxtaposition where it felt like there were loads of opportunities or nothing for me at all. Eventually I decided to go into the publishing industry, originally with the idea of being an editor. But, as I worked in that industry I learnt new things and skills and discovered a different path, still technically in publishing but nowhere near what I had first envisioned. So basically, from what I have learnt (and Wilde's quote really symbolises this), is that the best thing for anyone who is unsure is to be flexible and be willing to try new things. But the most important thing is that a career is not and should never be the most significant thing about you, there is life outside of the workspace too.
More than a decade after I got my Master's, I still have no idea what I'm doing/want to do with the rest of my life. My professional adventures in my 30s came mostly by happenstance, sooo... now it's just "what now/next?" I'm sure there are as many people who only know what they *don't* want to do than what they *do* want to do.
i LOVED jane eyre and i was so surprised because i read it for a university paper but something about her story got to me… i think it’s perfect for fall !!
I feel like I had about the same experience with that quote. There is nothing bad about being indeciceve with career choice och academic ambitions, since that locks you up. Being free to do anything and be anyone is what matters
Lol I recently got the exact same monitor stand. More for the extra space on my desk than anything else lol. But with the vast majority of my furniture being handmedowns those little things freshen things up a bit. Plus I have a slightly ridiculous amount of stationary and art supplies and despite having one of those super ugly but immensely practical office drawer blocks under my desk, still didn't feel like I had enough storage space on and around my desk lol.
@@panicgwny Not at all.... Made some bad choices and took a minute to get back on track. Im in warehousing and logistics now. Totally different direction but a great career. All good.
I really like thoese new kind of videos, I'm also not sure of what to do in life so I'm taking a gap year this year as well. Loved the studio ghibli references as well. Thank youu 🥰🥰
I love your videos! Especially the latest long ones and i love how you set a mood in your set up❤️😘 i was wondering which led lights you use for the purple light
Omg that happens to me too with falling asleep when I'm reading throughout the day! How to stop doing it, I still wanna keep reading before I go to sleep😂
I read before going to sleep but than I’ll just wake up and continue reading whatever I left off when I decided to read during the day I also get sleepy so I make sure to have coffee with me to not feel sleepy lol
Hey Leonie: Hoping you're feeling as good as you look, and I'm very happy to hear you've decided to volunteer some of your time toward a goal you believe is important. As for Jane Eyre, that Thornfield Hall sounds like a really swinging hotspot but who knows what goes on beyond those old wooden walls? Then there's Max Medina, who has his hands full and is in over his head with those inscrutable Gilmore Girls. As for me, I've been listening to some Robert Sapolsky lectures, which I recommend. If you ever travel back in time to the 1980s, please look me up and we'll share a cup of coffee. Very good to see you. Take care.
OH MY GOD?? I’ve literally been a follower of you since 2019 I think and I never knew what was your major. I’m now shocked that you mastered in neurobiology, I’m a molecular biology and genetics student! I’ve always wanted to get in Harvard too like-
This is so random but I'm binging your videos and you mentioning Sisyphus inspired me to procrastinate assignments to paint him. (I also ran to buy a collection of Oscar Wilde's) so thank you for influencing my life
I'm 27 and graduated about 5 years ago. But I don't really know what I'm doing with my life and also have no clue what I want to do. I even had hard time in university, because I wanted to study genetic engineering but instead, end up with electrical engeering. I was afraid about getting a job after graduation, so I did go to master's class but eventually dropped out. After that got a good job in electrical engineer field, but quit and moved to another company which is also disappointing. So, yes, I don't really know what I want to do. Sometimes I think that may be this is because I choose wrong major, may be I should follow my heart and took the genetic engineering. I don't know. I wish to have some break in my life. Just one year to think about what I want to do.
How uncertainty of who you want to be can be a reward?! It's torture! I'm currently getting my major degree but I don't know anything bc I skipped classes. I study what I'm not interested in. I'm also looking for a job in my field of major. It's hard for someone with anxiety like me. The job requires a lot of interactions with people, pretty time consuming. I hope I can do it. I need a lot of luck. I'm so lost I'm freaking out organising my life
I watched the first minutes of the video and it was like "omg we are the same” 😂. I finished university(I'm a Linguist) a month ago and I don't know what to do with my life.
Hi Leonie! I once knew 'what I would do with my life' I did it, things changed and I didn't know again. It's the way things go in life, I guess. I saw a meme on IG, something like "Family member: What are you doing with your life? Me: It's a surprise... " 😀 I'm about to use that line next time someone asks. :-)
The United States has a national program called The Rural Health Initiative. In order to entice Physicians to set up their practice in rural areas of the Country, that are without adequate health care and ready access to Doctors, a medical student goes through Medical School using Government Loans. In exchange for practicing medicine in one of these rural areas in the USA for at least 5 years, the Government forgives the Government Loans. So, the net effect is that the student goes through Medical School pretty much free. You might want to check this out if you don't mind moving to America. The Program is not limited to citizens of the USA. We would be glad to have you !
If you studied something as difficult as neurobiology, you must be somewhat interested in the field. I hated engineering at first but loved it by the time I graduated.
My grandpa was a university professor and he always said “university is an education, not job training”, you’re not supposed to know what you want to do yet, those that do, usually burn out or are faced with disappointment. and I appreciated that as I navigate my 20s

Same im avoiding it too😭and people around me are pushing me to do things

god, same :(

I never get bugged of following you... It's just so entertaining yet informative 🥰
this video‘s so interesting and motivating, love it!🫶🏼
Thank you for talking about that, I just graduated Uni with my master's degree and I'm quite lost, I don't really know what to do or which direction to go for.
But the most important thing is that a career is not and should never be the most significant thing about you, there is life outside of the workspace too.
thank you for being my comfort UA-camr
Thank you for this video, this is exactly how I feel after graduating recently ❤️
woah im also reading jane eyre atm!
Not me crying at the Spirited Away music 😢 But I watched this video while folding my laundry and it was so relaxing!
i LOVED jane eyre and i was so surprised because i read it for a university paper but something about her story got to me… i think it’s perfect for fall !!
loved this video!! made me feel like i can do something about my living space as well!
I loveee these kinda organising vlogs so much
I have that exact monitor stand!! It's great that is has a drawer and I put my keyboard underneath :)
as someone who's goint through an existencial crisis right now bc of the future i just wanted to say thank u for this video
This does inspire me to organize ❤️ thank you
That quote in the beginning 🥹✨
Loving your latest content Leonie 🥰✨
This so weird cause I'm currently studying biomedical science and you're currently one of my favourite UA-camrs 🤍
Love those kind of videos. Thank you!
I really felt this. I was a psychology major and life went a completely different direction.
if you wouldn't mind me asking, what happened? What changed? what do u do now?
@@panicgwny Not at all.... Made some bad choices and took a minute to get back on track. Im in warehousing and logistics now. Totally different direction but a great career. All good.
@@amfknproblem1358 Nice, congrats! Hope you're doing well.
I have the exact same monitor standard! Lol. It's where I keep all my book tabs and pens and extra bookmarks. :)
I love the editing in your videos.
Very inspiring vlogs! Would love to see more of them
Would you think about showing your plants and talking about them? i would love to see that! :)
I really like thoese new kind of videos, I'm also not sure of what to do in life so I'm taking a gap year this year as well. Loved the studio ghibli references as well. Thank youu 🥰🥰
Watching this video is motivating me to get my life together 😩😩
I love your videos! Especially the latest long ones and i love how you set a mood in your set up❤️😘 i was wondering which led lights you use for the purple light
Thanks again for an incredibly relatable video 💖
Omg that happens to me too with falling asleep when I'm reading throughout the day! How to stop doing it, I still wanna keep reading before I go to sleep😂
Im glad to find this channel
I read before going to sleep but than I’ll just wake up and continue reading whatever I left off when I decided to read during the day I also get sleepy so I make sure to have coffee with me to not feel sleepy lol
FELT, I graduated a year and a half ago and I feel beyond lost in society
Take care.
boomer here: i retired three years ago & i HATE it. i'm gearing up to start a second career. this video helped a lot
ps: love your cozy sweatshirt!!
I got the same monitor stand for my mondern and affordable Ikea landfill I like to call my room
(I also ran to buy a collection of Oscar Wilde's) so thank you for influencing my life
I have to the effort vs value thing!!!
I have the opposite problem with reading before bed. If I start reading before bed...I finish the book.
Loved this video
Literally did not notice the glow in the dark skeleton until you mentioned it haha
21:40 SO MANY things are "a certain colour" but it reality they're just annoyingly gray :(
How uncertainty of who you want to be can be a reward?!
I'm so lost
I'm freaking out organising my life
I need to know where this fox plushie is from 😢
You have inspired me to find some ways to volunteer in my community! Now I just need to leave the house😅
I study medicine in Germany and I got the exact same cancer poster
I watched the first minutes of the video and it was like "omg we are the same” 😂. I finished university(I'm a Linguist) a month ago and I don't know what to do with my life.
Which app do you use for your planner? 😃 I could really use some help in choosing one
My brain is also conditioned to sleep after reading so I am often in trouble during the day if I lie down and read xD
We would be glad to have you !
what's the name of that fox, it's soo adorable and the new blankets go with his colors so well🍂💗
If you studied something as difficult as neurobiology, you must be somewhat interested in the field. I hated engineering at first but loved it by the time I graduated.
love de vid, somehow conforting lol
Absolutely loved the video! Super om te horen dat je bij Milieudefensie helpt! :)
