In 2016, the NHL decided to allow fans to vote for any player for the all-star game, and a random player named John Scott was very popular among fans because they could vote anyone in. The dude was fighting for an NHL job, and it sort of became a big joke to vote him in. He got so many votes that he ended up making the all-star game and won all-star MVP. The NHL immediately switched up how fan voting worked from that moment on.

Lamelo is putting up empty stats and he has sat out the majority of games this season. It doesn't matter how much you're liked if you have that combo. Bradley Beal used to do the same thing on the Wizards. Jordan Poole is also doing the same thing rn, but he has less fan votes.

I been stopped watching the all Star game and NBA in general but Lamelo is undeniably exciting basketball
The wild thing is, Hornets have been hit HARD by injuries again this year... top number of games for any starter on the team? Josh Green with 41 games. Next up? LaMelo at 31... the rest of the starters go down in number of games from there. SI article from the 7th notes FIVE games played by the starters together at that time, and Brandon Miller went out for the year just after that, plus several players are still missing games off and on since. It is absurd to punish LaMelo for injuries, considering he's played enough games himself and has played well. Yes the Hornets needed better depth this year clearly, but to punish the fans, and LaMelo makes no sense.
People need to start realizing that there's more talent in the league than All-Star spots.

I don't actually agree with you. As a Cavaliers fan, Evan Mobley has been (by far) our best player this season, look at his on/off numbers in terms of offensive rating, not only on defense. I believe Lamelo should have been there, replacing Garland it's fine although he's having arguably a better season than Mitchell that's starting, but I won't hear it about Evan, those who watched know.
This guy knows nothing about the Cavaliers. He is a casual. The Cavs have had the best record all season and he has yet to post one video about anyone on the team or the team in general. Mobley is one of the best 2 way players in the league and is the most valuable player on the team. If anything you could make an argument that Mitchell has been the worst of the big 4 and he was voted all star starter.
41% from the field, 33% from three is trash. Players only get minutes on that horrid efficiency unless you're an elite defender or your name is Lamelo. In LaMelo's case, he gets to lead the league in field goal attempts and 3 PTT attempts.

LaMelo is chucking 25 shots a game on a bad team. Why do you think his stats are called “empty calorie stats”? It’s because his numbers DON’T help the Hornets win games. He’s super inefficient and doesn’t defend. Coaches aren’t blind. LaMelo isn’t part of the solution in Charlotte they’d be just as bad with or without him. Also the reverse logic works for other talented players too if Brunson was on the Hornets I’d bet they’d be better than they would be with LaMelo chucking 25 stupid shots a game.
the way i used to look at all star was to see CIRCUS level shots and dunks. all star is supposed to be entertaining/competitive, but most importantly fun for everyone win or lose.

Definitely agree. Plus, Mobley might have an extra .2 block, .2 steal, extra couple points/rebounds per game if the Cavs weren’t up by 40 halfway through the 3rd. He only gets 30 min/game, and sometimes has to split time or play alongside JA, whom is great in his role. Plus, the dude is only 23 years old.
So yeah, between Mobley and Siakim- they’re both great, but I’d take Mobley any day. Part of the reason why Donovan wanted to sign with the Cavs was to play alongside Mobley; whom he thinks will grow into one of the greatest big men in the league.

The problem is a fundamental paradox in the way the NBA and fans VIEW the all-star game. You cannot both view it as a REWARD for GOOD PLAY and WINS, AND a SHOWCASE for the FANS. The reason it has no ratings is because the NBA leans more towards it being for the PLAYERS and not us, the FANS. which is stupid.
Being an "all-star" shouldn't matter in terms of contracts and all-time accolades. It's based on partial fan voting, partial media voting, and partial coach voting for HALF a season, and injuries take a player out. No, all that should matter for PLAYERS are the END OF SEASON AWARDS. All-NBA, All-defense, DPOY, MVP, etc, etc.
All star weekend should be for the FANS, and reward players for being FAN FAVORITES. THAT'S what would ACTUALLY draw ratings back for the weekend. But, it would hurt too many players ego's who view it as yet another accolade for these already self-obsessed multi-millionaires (and billionaires...) make it about the fans, not the freaking players.

I am a hornets fan and some of these takes are just flat out ridiculous. Melo's team doesn't help him get numbers because he's the only talent we have?? Its the exact opposite. Melo is terribly inefficient but is bouyed by a sky high usage rate (he leads the league in usage, but not much else). Meanwhile Mobley has been absolutely cooking the last 3 years with a 20% usage on a team with tons of options and putting up great numbers for his position on awesome efficiency (TS 65%!!!).. saying Mobley doesn't deserve a spot lets me know you aren't actually watching games. The cavs weren't good when he was cooking in 2022 or 2023 but now since they're doing good you want to discount him for it? Either you don't watch ball or you forgot about him while he was injured, and neither are a good look
We love Lamelo in Charlotte, and he's fun to watch, but he does not play winning basketball. If Lamelo Ball is your volume shooter you should expect to lose but be entertained. In a small market like we have that is fine
Yeah, I like AM but his logic is off. Playing on a better team hurts your stat totals. On the flip side, being on a bad team CAN hurt your efficiency, but only if you chuck shots to get more points the way Lamelo does. There are plenty of more efficient guys on bad teams. If Melo only scored 23 and shot 48 percent from the field and 39 from 3, would the Hornets have less than 12 wins? I doubt it. Those extra 5 points don’t contribute to winning. Plus, don’t both sides of the ball matter? D and O. Lastly, I don’t know why he brought Mobley into this, being a big - the coaches vote for a certain number of bigs and guards too, so they don’t compete with each other.

American players would never go for that. Every year it feels like there are snubs now because of how many good players there are. And now there’s half as many spots for Americans? Especially with contract incentives based on accolades being pretty standard, NBPA would dismantle the league before that happened.

The fans voted Lamelo first cause most fans now are casuals who watch the game thru youtube and ig highlights. Lamelo is a highlight reel. The coaches, the media and players, who watch him play, see that he doesnt ever wanna do anything that doesnt add to his counting stats. You haven't watched the hornets play this year and it shows. Lamelo was putting the hornets on his back earlier this year before he got hurt. Then more players from the hornets got hurt and when he got back it was just a mess. Melo isn't just out there statpadding
@Baethovin I actually have at least 10 times cause I had Miller on my fantasy team. Most times when he doesn't have the ball, one stays wondering "why is he there? Who did he think he was gonna help standing/moving there? Why is that the shot he took?" He's a talented player, so of course he helps overall, but not more than the players selected over him. Same goes for Young, who I also have on my fantasy team. Talented players, yes, but they could help their team a lot more if they had a less selfish attitude. Do things that don't show up on the counting stats sheet as well, so coaches can start respecting you. It's simple

Trey Mann was the lone player who could create but he's hurt as well. Lamelo is forced to carry a unit who can't secure without him. Plus the coach lineups are Steve Kerr level trash. Kevin Love made the all star team multiple times in Minnesota even though they never made the playoffs, DeMarcus cousins made the all star game in Sacramento even though the kings didn't even win 30 games. So yeah there's been multiple players who's been all stars on losing teams.
