Join me, Henk-Jan when I sail (singlehanded) the Dutch North Sea Canal and have Motor Vessel Lady Liselot, a 49ft Trawler Yacht Visit the Port of #Amsterdam. Perhaps you ask yourself: how do I drive a big boat like a 49ft Trawler? Well, let me show you, how I do it.

Weet je dat Nederlandse ondertiteling aan kan zetten? Doorgaans zo'n 4 uur nadat de video is gepubliceerd. Klik op de video, en kies uit de iconen die rechtsonder verschijnen dan voor [ondertiteling] en kies daar voor Nederlands. Dan wordt zelfs mijn Engels (knap he van UA-cam) vertaald naar Nederlandsch.

Another video of happy memories for me. The last time I sailed along there was 2008 I kept my boat in a marina called Twellagea (I think that is how it is spelt. By the way you were not going to enter the Ijsselmeer but the Markermeer !!!!😮😮Never mind. Great video. Cheers Michael
How is this possible? Hardly anyone in The Netherlands knows Twellega marina. I finished my 1999 journey to the Channel islands (see ua-cam.com/video/wWgQCH9jwBQ/v-deo.html) in Amsterdam and ended up in this marina living aboard my ketch for a couple of years. It was such a nice small marina along the Nieuwedammerdijk. Just a little Amsterdam but on The North side. IJsselmeer vs Markermeer, after all those years I still make this mistake. When at school I learned about the IJsselmeer, the Markermeer did not exist then.

Ik ben een binnenschipper. Even voor het goede begrip:
Wanneer een verkeerspost resp. blokkanaal actief is, zoals in dit geval vhf 3 "noordzeekanaal" dan is dat OOK het schip-schip kanaal.
vhf 10 wordt in een blokkanaal gebied niet gebruikt. Veel grote schepen hebben 2 marifoons an boord en hebben vhf 10 in zo'n blokgebied desondanks bij staan en dus kun je contact maken, maar het is een misverstand om vhf 10 in blokkanalen serieus te gebruiken. ALLE nautische verkeer gaat via het blokkanaal, dus ook afspraken tussen schepen onderling. Waarom? Veel kleine schepen hebben maar 1 marifoon, kunnen dus niet kiezen. Het blokkanaal is leidend, dus dat wordt gebruikt. Daarnaast is het veel overzichtelijker om alle scheepvaart communicatie verkeer op 1 kanaal af te wikkelen. Ten slotte staan alle rondvaardboten in de stad ook op 10 en zou het op het IJ en Noorzeekanaal veel te druk worden mbt marifoonverkeer als daar ook vhf 10 gebruikt wordt. Het is juist een van de functies van een blokkanaal om dat marifoon verkeer te scheiden.
Sterker nog, veel kleine schepen maken die denkfout en gebruiken in dit gebied vhf 10 als standaard kanaal. Die zijn dan vaak moeilijk aan te roepen én missen duidelijk veel van de informatie van het blokkanaal, dat werkt in de praktijk moeilijk en vertragend, vaak juist op momenten dat je snel iets af wilt spreken.
Dus: buiten de blokanalen Noordzee, Haven Amsterdam en Schellingwoude gebruik je 10, binnen de blokkanalen gaat al het verkeer, ook (juist) schip-schip via het blokkanaal.
Als je goed luistert zul je ook horen dat grote schepen ook de onderlinge afspraken via het blokkanaal doen, met of zonder tussenkomst van de post, een beetje afhankelijk van de urgentie van de mededeling

Hallo Roeland, ik volg jou met Veronica op FB en UA-cam. Dank je wel voor je aanvulling.
Roeland is an owner/captain on a commercial barge (Check out his Dutch channel: ua-cam.com/users/DespitsVeronica) and points out that in regions with a mandatory VHF channel, one (both recreation and commercial) should always use that VHF channel and not the VHF 10 as I did with "Ferry 101".
During my trip on the North Sea Canal I changed the VHF to the mandatory VHF channel, and for that reason Port Control was able to warn me about the River Queen Vessel leaving the mooring..
The music was good too. I have memories of that canal just over 40 years ago. Nice to see it again.

Hi Paolo, yes with this platform, the world seems to become very small. One can explorer every bit of the planet. Even the port of Amsterdam, uhm Mokum.
Ik geniet elke dag van je video's. Erg interessant. Ik heb nog geen video's gezien waarbij je aanlegt bij zware wind of stroming. Lijkt me moeilijk. Maar je hebt een bijzonder goed uitgerust schip om de klus te klaren.
In deel 5 van de SPRING IS IN THE AIR-tour zal je zien dat ze in een paar seconden ook een paar meter van de steiger is weggewaaid. Dan is zo'n sternthruster reuze handig.
Bekende beelden voor mij geboren Amsterdammer varen is een avontuur en leuk.
En dan is dit nog maar het NZ kanaal. De staande mastroute door de stad is ook erg leuk, en met een sloep elke gracht verkennen geeft perfect de sfeer van deze stad weer. Ik houd er van.

Maar mijn vrouw en ik zijn ooit ook begonnen aan de verbouw van een tjalk uit 1902.
Vanuit hetzelfde uitgangspunt, wat als morgen alles mogelijk is.
Huizen verkocht, baan opgezegd, schip gekocht, en toen kreeg ik 2 herseninfarcten.
Half jaar nog geprobeerd om door te gaan, maar rekenen, schrijven, meten en ga zo maar door, gaan niet meer.
Vandaar dat ik zo geniet van jou "avonturen"

Hello Karen and Dana. Lady Liselot is sold to me as a 1980 Blue Ocean Trawler build in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. If you look on Pinterest you will see the Marine Trader has a lot of similarities. Both in- and outside. The interior almost looks the same, so perhaps she is original a MT, with some addaptions for the European market. I have 2x Perkins 6.354, 175Hp Turbo engines.

@@karencassel4122 I guess it's timing and budget. The moment I decided to go for a boat (again) and become a liveaboard, I made a must-have and wishlist. Lady Liselot ticks 32 of the 38 boxes. In 12 about months I found and bought her. Good luck with the search, and nice to know that you guys join me on my journey!
I’m thinking about sailing to the Amsterdam from the uk but only speak English will this be a problem communicating by radio
I have boat friends from Switzerland, and they speak English when using the VHF. And from the comments on my videos I know that there are some Americans who have a boat here, and they also (of course) speak English on the VHF. English and German is an additional language for many operators. I had a Canadian friend in Amsterdam, he wanted to learn to speak Dutch but was not able to. Why? Because everytime we Dutchies hear some one trying to speak Dutch with an English accent, we switch over to speak English. After 7 years trying he stopped and only spoke English.
BUT... (I almost forgot) since all ship-ship communication will be done in Dutch that part wil become a little more difficult. But I have noticed that the operators in Amsterdam and on the Nort Sea Canal, once you have reported and they know you're English they will warn you in English.
@KEVIN most Dutch understand and speak at least basic English. I believe that knowledge of English language even is mandatory for foreign vhf operators on board of ships and on our inland waterways and VTS operators.

Hello Adolf, just switch the engines every now and then, to keep the running hours alike.
Using 1 engine gives 100% fuel burn (10l/h) and 100% speed. Adding the second engine means 200% fuel burn and (only) 125% speed, and not 200% speed. Being Dutch... I only use the 2nd engine for manouevring and mooring. ;-)
