Thanks Jimmy. I'm 71 and a hunter who likes an accurate rifle. Sometimes a little too anal about accuracy. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season
Barry, I did lap the bolt lugs on the action before installing the barrel. It shoots less than 1/2" pretty consistently, if I do my part. I'm kind of like yourself. I won't own a rifle that isn't accurate and consistent doing so. Peace and blessings this Christmas season for your and your family.
Did you blueprint or do anything special to the action? Also what is the barrel length of your McGowan? Do you think there is any need to go with a faster twist? I do not plan on shooting any more than 600 yds. Thanks again for your very informative videos.
The barrel is 26" It stabilizes the 100-115 grain range excellent. I have shot them out to around 600+ yards. I think the 1-9 is the middle ground for lighter bullets as well as up to at least the 115grs. I plan on testing some heavier bullets later. The action was in really good condition. All I had to do was lap the bolt lugs by hand. Thank you for the questions and kind words.
Always enjoy your videos. Did you do any work to the action like blueprinting? I have the same rifle. Just trying to decide which caliber to go with. Considering the 280ai.
Thank you for your kind words. I believe the 280AI to be, in my opinion, the best all around cartridge out there. If I did not already have a 280AI that would have been the rifle I would have built. I didn't need to do anything to the action for the build it was in good shape. It's been my experience that "blue printing" the action for a hunting rifle isn't necessary. If I was going to go to that much trouble and expense I would build off a custom Remington 700 footprint action. Weatherby sells their 307 action as a builders action for a very reasonable price and it is a great action.
