    I have the same rifle. There was a break in period. I discovered it shoots Hornady 55gr varmint express very well. My best group was 0.25 inches at 100 yards(all groups <1moa). I stretched it out this past week and was 3 for 3 hitting a steel size coyote at 486 yards and 5 for 5 hitting a steel size ram at 550 yards. Thanks for the video, would love to see more!

      I'm from NC and grew up in the western mountains. I like Hornady whitetail hunter in 150 grain, Hornady Outfitter in 150 grain, and Federal power shock in 150 grain . Whichever your rifle likes best. Be sure, whatever ammo you pick, it has a hunting bullet and not a target bullet loaded. You can go up to 165 grain in all of them as well, but 150 grain has taken care of several Mule deer for me with no problem. Let me know how your rifle does and which ammo it likes best. Good luck.

    Tikka makes a solid rifle, accurate and a very smooth action. Excellent 2 stage trigger. I like the spiral fluted bolt and the heavy barrel on the Super Varmint. I have the T3x Arctic in .308 - I like it for big game hunting in the woods - nice open sights. And a T3x Tac A-1 in .223 topped with a Nightforce 5.5-22 X 56 - I like for target shooting at the range. I have some other rifles that shoot as good, but not without trigger and barrel upgrades. Except for this Remington 700 Police I have in .223. I don't know if I was lucky but that rifle is as good as any I have had - without doing a single modification to it. I have my eye on the super Varmint to add to the collection. I wish you luck with the rifle - I am confident you will like it. Enjoy and cheers from Canada.

    Did you blueprint or do anything special to the action? Also what is the barrel length of your McGowan? Do you think there is any need to go with a faster twist? I do not plan on shooting any more than 600 yds. Thanks again for your very informative videos.

    • @JimmyChrisawn
      @JimmyChrisawn 28 днів тому

      The barrel is 26" It stabilizes the 100-115 grain range excellent. I have shot them out to around 600+ yards. I think the 1-9 is the middle ground for lighter bullets as well as up to at least the 115grs. I plan on testing some heavier bullets later. The action was in really good condition. All I had to do was lap the bolt lugs by hand. Thank you for the questions and kind words.

      Barry, I did lap the bolt lugs on the action before installing the barrel. It shoots less than 1/2" pretty consistently, if I do my part. I'm kind of like yourself. • @JimmyChrisawn
      @JimmyChrisawn Місяць тому

      Thank you for your kind words. I believe the 280AI to be, in my opinion, the best all around cartridge out there. If I did not already have a 280AI that would have been the rifle I would have built. I didn't need to do anything to the action for the build it was in good shape. It's been my experience that "blue printing" the action for a hunting rifle isn't necessary. If I was going to go to that much trouble and expense I would build off a custom Remington 700 footprint action. Weatherby sells their 307 action as a builders action for a very reasonable price and it is a great action.

    Thanks I spent a fair amount of time searching for bolt dissasemly for my hmr and I mostly found ones for different models which don't come apart the same way. I can't understand why rifle makers have a bunch of different bolt designs you'd think they would settle on one reliable design. Savage does this. I will probably order the CPR bolt shroud now as during my search I saw a competition shooter have a bolt failure to cock due to the threads slipping.

    Useful videos are always appreciated. When I got my new to me M1 Garand from the CMP earlier this year I was a bit dismayed to discover that the bolt was from another M1 compared to the 6-digit serial number (December 1941 SA) on the receiver. Someone had engraved that other SN onto the bolt. I jeweled that bolt and it looks terrific! Many thanks. I wound up using a focusing rail from my photography hobby to be able to leave a consistent pattern. The small brushes worked for me, and used some heat shrink tubing to tighten up the spread of the SS wires. With a small amount of diamond dust impregnated grease as a lapping compound ,it took about fifteen minutes.
