I am currently loading my 25-06 with a Badlands precision BD-2 95gr. solid copper bullet using IMR-4831 powder and getting 3550fps in a 22" barrel. I shot this over the weekend doing some OCW testing and found a wide band of charges that formed a 2" group at 400 yards. I will be taking this rifle on my Wyoming antelope hunt this fall. Previous to this bullet, I had been using a nosler accubond 110gr bullet with H4831 and have taken many deer with that load.
Been loading the 117 grn SST since it came out to great effect on many deer and an Elk when I had scope failure on my 300ultra mag. I love 100 grain bullets for Goats and deer. But to be a serious Elk rifle I wouldn’t hesitate to use a 115 grn Barnes TTSX
I’ve shot and reloaded 25-06 for over 40 yrs. Yes, old fart. From 60gr to 120. My deer load was 120 gr Nosler Solid Base (best bullet ever) and 52 gr Rel 22, CCI200. Browning ABolt Medallion. Thors hammer. Never had a deer take a step out to 300 yds. I have 5 2506s right now with another barrel coming with fast twist for the 133/134/135s. I have a 25 creedmoor I’m playing with now with the heavies.
I have a 25-06 that my uncle made on a Mauser action. It was my father's deer and varmint rifle and he gave it to me a few years ago. I don't have the die set to reload for it yet so I've just shot it recently with some factory ammo. I put a video up showing that shooting session. This video gave me some ideas on loads to work up if I can find the powders. I appreciate the info.
This video makes me want to get a 25-06 once again. I hunted with one in a Tikka T3 for 10 years and it killed everything I pointed it at from big Red Stags, Boar, goats and was fantastic on wallabies too. The sierra 117gr game king with H4831sc was just the ticket.
My two favorite rifles are 257 rob and 338-06 both of them do great with 43-50 but lately with the 115 gr 25 cal I have been using reloader 19 1 hole at 100 yards I shot ten golf balls off of water bottles no misses with a light weight Barrel Douglas number 2 taper all one after the other hot barrel and all
I have a Mec Marksman and I kind of regret getting the Hornady lock n load for it. It’s a little difficult to set up a sizing die because backing the die out unlocks the bushing from the press. Not to mention if you reload for over a dozen calibers, you’re going to need to buy all those lock n load bushings.
I’m late to the comments. This rifle is my goto hunting rifle. I’ve had nothing but great experience’s with the Barnes 100 grain on deer. I reload my own stuff. Drops them in their r tracks.
Gavin, I've been watching your channel for awhile. I have found all of your content very informative. However, there is one cartridge that I have not seen covered, the 6.5-06. I would love to see you work up a load using the Hornady 153 A-Tip.
I built a 6.5/06 about 1995. I have enjoyed it for many years. IINM Asquare legitimatized this caliber. My gun is right on heels of published 264Win mag loads with its 25" bbl. Id enjoy that video as well Gavin.
@@michaelbyrd499 This was built on a 1909 Argentine Mauser action. (1898 design) I like these because they have a hinged floorplate. Im a big fan of the Mauser action. Shillen Barrel & Bell Carlson thumbhole stock, Timney trigger, Control mounts & Nikon 4.5-14 scope.
@@michaelbyrd499 I saw my first P-14 is probably 25 years the other day!! Good solid action for sure! Love ta see what ya come up with!! I have never done a video on this 6.5/06. Maybe I should!
I have found that 117 and 120 grain bullets generally do not shoot that well in the standard 1-10" twist factory barrels. I have also found that, depending on the powder, magnum primers like the CCI 250 can provide better accuracy. Excellent advice overall in this presentation.
I'm a 25 cal fan too. I have two 25-45 Sharps that I built. I have always loved the Ruger No1, but never owned one. About one and a half years ago, I bought a neglected No 1 in 25-06 with a heavy barrel. The stock was cracked and it was rusted enough that the action was frozen. I completely rebuilt it, had it cerakoted, and repaired/refinished the stock. It is a tack driver and I love it. Shot 3/4" group with factory 100gr ammo the first time I took it out. I shot my first whitetail with it this year. I'm also getting ready to start reloading for it.
I love the 25 cal. I've had 2 25-06 rifles, a Browning A bolt and my favorite which I have had for years is the Savage 110LH tactical with a bull barrel. Where I live the 100 gr Nosler ballistic tip is the bullet of choice. I also have a custom 257stw shooting the same bullet right at 3900 fps. I only use it for hunting so it will last my lifetime and it is instant death on whatever is on the other end. It shoots less than half inch groups with the Hart 26 inch no. 5 barrel. It's not for sale as long as I can still shoot. RL 25 is the powder that powers the bullets.
I bought a used Mauser built 25-06 a few years back for a deer rifle. Loaded up some 117gr soft points with IMR 4350 and hit the range. Five bullets made five perfect boat shaped holes in the target at 25 yards! Turns out the rifle has a 1:14” twist and won’t stabilize anything over 100gr or 1” long. It would shoot the Hornady 100gr sp’s decently, at which point they discontinued them… 😡 The 87gr Speer Hot-Cor’s work well enough out of it.
IMR 4350 with the Nosler 100 blue ballistic tip, 87 grain Remington hollow points, and Berger 115 vld hunting bullet. IMR 4831 for the 120 hornday hollow point.
I love my 25-06 in a weatherby vanguard sporter Loading 101 grain Barnes lrx with imr4350 Just ordered some h4350 as I’m having a hard time locating imr4350, but I love it for caribou out to 400 yards
I have been all copper on game since 2006 by choice since my .243 loved them with handloads and would stack 5 shots at 100 in about the size of a dime. They open quick and penetrate through and through every time. I have shot a muley blacktail cross at 600 with a 85 grainer out of that .243 and it opened completly and passed through, that deer is the only time I have ever recovered part of one as a petal was burried in the far side rib and tore off after taking a ventrical off the heart and gelling the back lung. Also shot a very small sitka blacktail with a 30-06 with a 165 grain barnes the other day and it left an exit the size of a baseball on a relativly thin deer. Both dropped where they stood and gave one head flip. I used that .243 with 85 grain barnes for everything in my late teens and early 20s and took muleys, elk, and blackbear with it and they all dropped where they stood so couldnt be happier and will never shoot bonded at anything but paper if I have the choice.
I haven't reloaded in decades. Used IMR 4831 under Hornady 120gr HP. Didn't have a chrono then either, but they went boom and hit where I aimed. Might have to get the old Rock Chucker out and start again with some new everything else, if I can find it at reasonable cost.

I really like these types of videos. I doubt you will get the most views and such from cartridges that are 100 years old and such but.... Just goes to show. Break though advances come slow.
The design of the cartridge may have been 100 years ago, but the .25-06 was basically a ‘wildcatter’ until Remington produced a factory cartridge in 1969. In my opinion, the flaw with the .25-06 is in its bullet design. Give the .25-06 a modern engineered projectile like the 6.5 creedmore and it would become an instant hit. It already has quite a few attributes over the 6.5.
I would like to see you do a short action vs long action comparison, between 25 creedmoor and a fast twist 25-06. With berger 133s or 135s. Im interested the difference in velocity and overall performance. I think it would be a great comparison. Thanks
87gr tnt with 54.5 of imr 4451 at 3.115 all I can say is try this combo on varmint. Nasty! Been around the 2506, .243 since 1981 when I started hunting. Left the 3006 alone until I was 16. These are the only cartridges I have needed

Reloaded 22 and a Hornady or sierra 117 grain bullet. They both shoot great in me and my sons 25/06 rifles. 117 grain bullet has always shot better accuracy wise than any other bullet we have tried. I believe I load 56 grains of R22
Great video just wondering if anyone else is using 70 grain sierra blitzking in there 25-06 and also curious on barrel length seen some Guns with 22 inch barrels wondering how much of a powder charge burn you would get but at least you would get a spectacular flame in low light deer hunting situations.
@@guyminer2384 hi Guy mine is also a Remington 700 it's the long range model with the 26 inch barrel I've been using it for vermin species such as foxes in the UK I have shot up to 120 grain bullet for some of the Deer species we have in the UK it can be a bit tricky to get bullet heads and brass over here and there's not that big of a selection of heads available in comparison to 6.5 & 30cal hope to see more on the 25-06 on the channel take care.
I have the MEC single stage and tried the quick stage change over but didn't like the extra float in the top as the end stop pressure was hard to read i point bullets and like a hard stop and feed back and find it works great with just the floating shell holder .
Had a Model 70 FWT in 25-'06 for a few years. It was a gorgeous rifle, accuracy was decent, but when you already have a 243 and a 270 Winchester, the 25-'06 kind of just stays in the gun safe. I sold it to buy a new JDJ barrel for my Contender.
@Brian Berg I can still shoot factory ammo through my ackley chamber. I'm getting .75moa with 120gr Remington green box coreloks.......and have fire formed brass afterwards. It's not a speed demon but it's still good enough for hogs and deer out to 300yds.
I have a LH Tactical hvy barrel. Says tactical on the bolt. I believe I got it in 1990. I've been killing coyotes and deer with Barnes copper ever since. I've harvested many whitetails. Coppers almost always go through and deer run zero to 50 yds after the shot, spray painting both sides of the path. The coppers don't leave lead bits in the meat! I bought some 75 Vmax to try on coyotes and p. dog's. A bit less expensive. I run a 115 tsx with 50 gr. of IMR4831. I'm going to try LRX'S next.
I have had the privilege to take a large number of game animals with the 25-06 Remington. In that time, I noticed that it appeared to kill and drop right there very often.
Gavin/Guy, I have a 25-06 with a 7 twist 4 groove Shilen, I am using 133gr yellow box and started out with Retumbo. I have not ran them across a crono however at 52gr of it it shot well, I worked up to 56gr with no pressure signs however @ 56gr the pattern turned to poo and even witnessed a keyhole. Obviously don't do that again...I would like to know your thoughts. Love your work keep it up.
@@guyminer2384 I would love to get this barrel bullet combo figured out as I am wanting it to be my hunting rifle this year and beyond. If I may I'd like to share this rifles origin, my father hunted with a Rem 700 bdl varmint special that he bought from an Aurora, Co SWAT member in 1972; he bought it from the gentleman in the parking lot of a sporting good store (that's a story all in itself) and he took plenty Mule Deer here in Colorado through the years with it, I even took my first buck with it hunting with him. Unfortunately through the years this rifle has been "shot out" and when he passed I decided to leave the rifle alone and just enjoy it for what it is. This leads me into the situation I'm in now A tribute rifle that I have had built...and asking for advice. I appreciated hearing from you, thank you.

I liked your video on the Remington 25-06 which is a outstanding caliber . The only problem I found was the poor selection of heavy grain hunting bullets from 100 grain up to 120 . Why are there not more companies designing or testing a variety of bullets for this caliber , I mean ballistics are there along with energy ? I have not tested the Barns bullet yet but it seem to be a winner for hunting deer size game and all I've shot was the ballistic tip , 100 grain and 117 grain bullet which works fine as far as accuracy and stopping power . The 120 grain Speer soft point is a keeper when you can find them , and that brings me back to the original point , why not more options with this fine caliber ? Just a thought !!!! Keep up the good work Gavin Dave Cook
@@duckwacker8720 only problem is the standard 1:10 twist will not stabilize the heavier bullets. Need at least a 1:8 twist recommended by berger for their 133 and 135 gr bullets. Speer has the same recommendation on their 130 gr bullets.

Nice video like to see you build a custom 25-06 long-range rifle ..
Barnes is absolutely the way to go!!
My experience with the MEC is great so far as well, I’ll have to check out the lock n load upgrade.
MEC from Wisconsin, good stuff. Of course I'm a little biased being from northern Wi.
I love the MEC press
This video makes me want to get a 25-06 once again. I hunted with one in a Tikka T3 for 10 years and it killed everything I pointed it at from big Red Stags, Boar, goats and was fantastic on wallabies too. The sierra 117gr game king with H4831sc was just the ticket.
My two favorite rifles are 257 rob and 338-06 both of them do great with 43-50 but lately with the 115 gr 25 cal I have been using reloader 19 1 hole at 100 yards I shot ten golf balls off of water bottles no misses with a light weight Barrel Douglas number 2 taper all one after the other hot barrel and all
I've taken both elk and bison with 180gr solid copper Barnes in 300 win mag. Works fine
I'm working on a load right now with the hornady 110 gr ELD-x using h4831sc.
I love the new Winchester StaBall 6.5 powder. It’s made for the 7mm08. Turns that cartridge into a light magnum
My go to hunting caliber. Blacktail, mule deer, hogs, black bear have all been taken with it. I use the Barnes 115 tsx bullet behind reloader 22.
That Apex 10 Autodrive on the left!!! Can't wait to see your video about the sensors!
Gavin and I both thought that it was kind of fun, focusing on the single stage MEC... With that big Apex 10 Autodrive over to the side... :)
@@cw2a which action did you use for your build? I'm going to use a P-14 action.
@@cw2a I too, am a fan of the 98 action. My first full build was on a 98. O would send you a picture of it, if I could figure out how to post it here.
115 ballistic tips and Partitions over H1000 or Retumbo going 3200 has tipped over a lot of deer and elk for me.
I want to see yall work up a load for his 6mm Remington. I have a Remington 244 / 6mm custom built to shoot 95gr bullets.
Im a big 243 fan. Id like to see some 6mm Remington videos
IMR 4350 with the Nosler 100 blue ballistic tip, 87 grain Remington hollow points, and Berger 115 vld hunting bullet. IMR 4831 for the 120 hornday hollow point.
I love my 25-06 in a weatherby vanguard sporter
Loading 101 grain Barnes lrx with imr4350
Just ordered some h4350 as I’m having a hard time locating imr4350, but I love it for caribou out to 400 yards
I would love to see ballistics test with the 25-06. Its my favorite😁
Awesome!!, love the 25-06.
I been waiting for you to do this!!
I am liking this press allot.
Thanks CW. It was fun. I'm pretty fond of my 25-06 rifle. It's done real well for me over the years.
@@guyminer2384 Woohoo Im your FIRST SUB!! 🇺🇸🤟🏽🇺🇸🤟🏽
Weatherby vanguard 25-06, my pet load is 53 gr of imr 4350 under 100 gr nosler ballistic tip. Consistent sub moa and my go-to for Texas whitetail
I've got a fast twist 25-06 and I use bullets up to the 135s. It's a solid round.
My best loads for my Hawkeye and encore r 52 to 53 g imr or j4350 powder with 100 g will shoot almost any well also 49 to 50g imr4831 with either 120 sierrabthp or 117sst but 8133 was unreal with 60 or 60.5 grains and 117sst and 120 sierrabthp my all time fave was 55g Hunter and sierra 100gbtsp get that 3300 class velocity also good were 55 magpro and 58.5 magnum with 120 sierra bthp watch magpro can get spooky at near max 57 g retumbo with 117sst and 115 part good were 54.5 rel23w 100gspeerbtspand53g rel26 120g speerbtsp have lots of loads gas i lluv the 25/06 never had a group go over 2 moa great video Gavin hope to see more 25cal video maybe do one with 257 roberts and new powders thanks
We’re are you guys getting the primers to do all this reloading ?
I have been running the 110 eldx with 4831sc but am about to switch to the 117 Hornady Interlocks for just a dedicated deer round
115 gr Nosler 49gr IMR 4350. 100 gr See RL 22 117 gr Horn IMR 4831 54.7 gr
Tika T3 rifle use both Hornady 117 grain SST and the interlock BTSP. 51.4 of 4831 for the BTSP and 51.6 for the SST
what velocity you get from that sst load ??? I cant get passed 3000 with 22 inch barrel with out getting a stick bolt
When you test monolithic bullets please include Cutting Edge and Lehigh Defense. The Barnes bullets tend to be too hard and over penetrate
I have a remington 25 06 wood stocked beautiful rifle i load berger 115 vld hunting bullets in with h-4831sc 54.1grns c.b.t.ogive is 2.688 thats 12 thousands jump fgm210m primers now i had no 25 06 brass but i had 30 06 brass so i sized it down in couple steps to 25 06. 24" barrel avg. 3038fps es=19 sd=7 it shoots very accurate i would have to dig up my target if you want the exact group size. I am working on a 100ttsx load with rl-16 so far i got it just under one inch im hoping to get it bout 1/2" or better but with the shortage im gonna wait before i start with it again. Thank you fer the 25 06 video looking forward to i hope many more .
My rifle, in the video, has a 24" barrel. I have not used anything lighter than 100 grain bullets from this rifle.
I have a Remington sendero 25-06 I like running imr 4350 under a 100gr nosler BT
Have 25-06 California is lead free so load Barnes 100 Gr TTSX with IMR 4166, Try it!
Quit giving out secrets about the 25-06 lol
@Brian Berg I've since moved to the ackley improved version with a faster twist.
@Brian Berg I can still shoot factory ammo through my ackley chamber. I'm getting .75moa with 120gr Remington green box coreloks.......and have fire formed brass afterwards. It's not a speed demon but it's still good enough for hogs and deer out to 300yds.
I'm curious, about retained weight . When you start recovering from jell.
It’s the great 25-0sexy
I have a LH Tactical hvy barrel. Says tactical on the bolt. I believe I got it in 1990. I've been killing coyotes and deer with Barnes copper ever since. I've harvested many whitetails. Coppers almost always go through and deer run zero to 50 yds after the shot, spray painting both sides of the path. The coppers don't leave lead bits in the meat! I bought some 75 Vmax to try on coyotes
and p. dog's. A bit less expensive. I run a 115 tsx with 50 gr. of IMR4831. I'm going to try LRX'S next.
I have had the privilege to take a large number of game animals with the 25-06 Remington. In that time, I noticed that it appeared to kill and drop right there very often.
Now we're talking
Gavin/Guy, I have a 25-06 with a 7 twist 4 groove Shilen, I am using 133gr yellow box and started out with Retumbo. I have not ran them across a crono however at 52gr of it it shot well, I worked up to 56gr with no pressure signs however @ 56gr the pattern turned to poo and even witnessed a keyhole. Obviously don't do that again...I would like to know your thoughts. Love your work keep it up.
I've not yet loaded for a fast-twist 25-06, nor with that heavy a bullet... Hmm... Will ponder this a bit. :)
117gr soft point has never failed me for my 25-06 for deer and sierra 90gr hp is devastating for varmint hunting out to 400yd.
I've got 25-35, 25-300 WSM, 25-284 10 Twist, 25-284 7 Twist, 25-06 10 Twist, 25-06 AI 10 Twist, 25-06 AI 7 Twist, 257 Weatherby 10 Twist, 257 Weatherby 9 Twist. I shoot everything with the 25 caliber. 115 TSX in 25-06, and 120 grain partition in the Weatherby kill Elk as good as anything.
25-06 is my go to gun reload 100ttsx with RL22 and that is dynamite hunt everything from black bears up to mountain goats with it
I believe you! The Barnes TTSX and similar bullets can give these smaller bore rifles a lot of penetration. I know guys who hunt elk with their 6mm & 25 cal rifles. They do real well with good bullets.
@@guyminer2384 yup my wife shot her mnt goat at 300 with it and I shot my last one @460 and it worked great just took a nice wh tail last fall hard not to grab the gun every time I head out
Great stuff like always!!! Quick side bar question. What do you think/hear of the 6.5 A Square or pretty much a 6.5-06? That looks like a pretty interesting round to check out or maybe Guy has some knowledge on that! Keep it up
Advice on brands of dies for PRS type loads? For 25-06AI, so most "common" brands don't seem to have it. Currently have an RCBS Rockchucker.
Shot my mule deer last year with a 180 grain TTSX in 30-06. It dropped where it stood, kicked for 2 seconds and died. Double lung shot... The chest cavity was red soup.
I'm my 25-06 I shoot 117gr sst bullets and it does a great job. I've been looking at the barns ttsx and wondering how well they will work on big northern Michigan deer.
4831sc should work. My 25-06 likes 110 gr. Winchester Extreme Weather
Atm i am selling my 300 winmag tikka switching to 308. 25-06 with 100 barnes ttsx would be my deer load
My first rifle was a r700 in 25-06, shoots good enough with factory rounds but way better with hand load, 42gr ADi 2209 and the horady 117gr hpbt drops anything on Aus no worries at all
Only thing is it is not a target round and I don’t think I could ever compare it to the 6.5mm calibres
Gavin can you please spin Guy up a fast twist barrel for his 25-06 and test it 🤔
115 gr Berger VLD in my 25-06
117gr hornady sst with reloader 19
Great timing! I’m just building my 25-06 from my original S&W 1500 30-06 into a chassis version of a 25-06 long range.
Which barrel twist are you going with? Thinking the new heavier bullets?
@@guyminer2384 I’m going with the 1:7.5” twist. I’ve ordered some of the 131 gr Blackjack bullets to see what I can come up with. I’ve got it sitting in an MDT chassis and it looks amazing. Soon we will learn how it performs.
Keep up the good work Gavin
Dave Cook
There's plenty of 130gr+ out there now.
@@duckwacker8720 only problem is the standard 1:10 twist will not stabilize the heavier bullets. Need at least a 1:8 twist recommended by berger for their 133 and 135 gr bullets. Speer has the same recommendation on their 130 gr bullets.
Try 25-06/ 25-06AI with staball hd yet?
I'd like to hear more about the lock and load conversion. Do you have to use Hornady dies? Or can you buy the bushings for all of your dies?
52 grains of IMR 4831 with a 110 grain accubond
87 grain v-max and imr4198 for some pretty devastating yote rounds
Forster co ax or MEC Marksman and main reason why if you could?
I love my 25-06's. I also agree that the 100g Barnes ttsx is where its at. I'm also interested in the 133g that berger has with a faster twist barrel.
