Excellent scene, as the light goes out so does Ben's sanity and will to live.
P.S. Fun fact, the voice of the radio announcer is none other than George Romero.
KillerFrank really? I didnt know that
Not surprised.
I want to hear the whole recording, couldn’t listen to what he was saying when poor Ben was laughing
Awe man... may the true master forever Rest In Peace. He will be missed.
Holy crap!
The way the radio announcer is addressing the events are so realistic that it's chilling to hear. Imagine if you turn on the radio or the tv and this is what they say.
That is actually Romero's voice on the radio.
do you know about the time that radio streamed a fake alien invasion? but it was George Orwell's War of Worlds based entirely? not sure how long ago it was, maybe 100 yrs, radio was the main communication media.
And it's all distorted and then comes over black and white cause color tv is done for.
Tony Todd is such a good actor. Him and the lady with the short hair really carried this film.

Yeah, this actually carries some weight. Ben's death in Romero's version was cheap and infuriating; he made it all the way through the night just to be shot by survivors.
@@kingnothing3523 Well it was also meant help people around that time to understand that it's not just the dead you need to fear but also the living. But yeah it was pretty cheap.

I can’t believe the key to the gas pump was there THE ENTIRE TIME! So ironic. If they had just looked for it in the cellar, all those tragic deaths could’ve been avoided 😰 so creepy how Ben starts to laugh at the irony of the situation and goes into shock!

"They got that right too!!!" See gas pump key hanging on the pegboard right in front of them, staring them in the face the entire time they were down there, picks it up and laughs his ass off, just priceless. One of the best remakes ever. On par with the original and in some ways even better just like The Hills Have Eyes remake, but the originals are still classics way ahead of their times just like Blade Runner. That's life, and it's as funny as it seems. They don't make such good movies like this one. Sure, there are exceptions, but those exceptions can be counted on a single hand.
It was always implied that Romero's films each had a message pertaining to whatever issues that the country was facing at the time. Night(1968)/Social change& the Vietnam war. Dawn(1978)Consumerism Day(1985)Class, I think. Land(2005)immigration. Night(1990) possibly the growing AIDS epidemic. I could be wrong (shrugging)

el kiote he's not talking about the black actor but a zombie that appeared earlier in the clip
He starts cracking up when he finds the gas pump key LOL
The crackle of madness, dead hope and hysteria from all the terror, the insanity, the constant bickering and fighting amongst themselves would never had happened if they just looked in the cellar and find the pump key.
Poor, poor Ben, all his mind and will to live have been destroyed by the sight of the very thing that should have spared them all of the terror, insanity, anxiety and distrust that they’d suffered throughout the entire night.
And his insanity and giddy laughter were the last things he made before he expired.
0:06 That look on his face. Like he's saying, "I'm sorry."
Very sad tho
I think that's how it was intended. This film actually does capture the sense of tragedy that a zombie outbreak would bring. Something that most zombie films, even the original Night of the Living Dead, fail to capture.
So true. That's why I felt sorry for Helen Cooper a bit more then most of the other characters. All she wanted was to get help for her daughter, and in some way try to help Ben and the others despite her arrogant husband bumping heads with Ben all the time, only to have tragically have her daughter turn and she herself after. Even the look on Ben's face show's like he very much regrets not helping her out.
"I'm sorry this happened to you." - Rick Grimes
Helen was already dead he had no choice, her daughter killed her after she become a piece of garbage.
These zombies are more terrifying then the ones from TWD. Their moans and the way they walk!
There was a lot of zombies. And the radio scene was awesome but creepy to listen to.
Yeah a little note to take when ben and cooper were fighting about the television and he says he can't get any reception in the basement turns out Cooper was wrong and Ben was right he was taking it downstairs
Thats gonna be the zombie apocylpse bro
This film didn't do well at the box office but it was superb, an excellent remake of the original. Tony Todd was fantastic in this, very convincing and natural. Nothing seemed strained about this, it was believable.
It was made basically to keep the 1968 film and the rest of the LD franchise in copyright. That's why it's an almost shot-for-shot remake. But they tweaked the orig. script and recast the picture very effectively.
Despite being a horror movie, this film makes me feel warm and happy.

In the original night it was confirmed that radiation carried by a satellite from Venus was the cause of the outbreak. In this version they said it was caused by some force unknown.
It's just implied...they see it on the news but one guy says it's confirmed and the other official with him is like "uh, no it wasn't" and the broadcast cuts as they get into a car. The one suggestion OFFERED is that it might be radiation but they never really confirm whether it's right or not because, well, the protagonists have more immediate issues to deal with...
Andrew Hussey In the original I strongly believed that the military knew more than what they were telling the the press. Even though the scientist may have been on point.
There's also something else that I remember from the first remake. On the back of the VHS box when it first arrived it also stated that the mutations in the living that caused them to turn(including the recently unburied deceased) after they died was caused by radiation from space. On the VHS box.
Furious. In the original version, scientists believed a radiation fallout from a space probe sent to Venus was responsible for it, but the Chief of Staff rejected the belief

Did anyone else realize that he was never bit? Meaning he died and came back to life, so they are all already infected.
Tombstone Dreams Ben bled out from the gunshot wound delivered by Cooper. Yeah it's not just the bites that transmit reanimation. Anyone who dies from any cause wakes up if their brain is intact. It's in the atmosphere 😨
The TV broadcast , right?
It's honestly never really clarified it even IS an infection if memory serves...it's left vague...I remember the original hinted it might have something to do with radiation from a comet but even there it's being argued about when it's suggested, it's kind of part of the horror of the thing, no one really seems to know what's going on or why, if it were a virus at least it would be explained but for all the people know it could be some sort of biblical judgement day shit.
Like what Rick Grimes said in the second season of Walking Dead, “We’re all infected.”
Well actually if you remember the news stated that any dead corpse was reanimated. Even people who have died from natural causes.
Looking back on this you can see the early stages of them gaining intelligence with how some of them behave

something most of you might have missed but earlier in the film ben and cooper fight over the television where cooper says 'you can't get reception in the basement' but he was wrong ben was right he was taking it down to the basement as it did get reception as you can hear from the radio

I can't believe the gas pump key was in the basement the whole time
I find it still surprising that the actor who played Johnny in the original Night of the Living Dead was in this movie he played the sheriff near the end of the film the next morning after Barbara was rescued and was walking past people who were hunting and killing the Zombies and she walks right past him talking to reporters saying 'Yeah their dead their all messed up' I mean I find it funny that after all the years that passed between this movie and the original that he would come back to be in this remake.
back in 68 Im pretty sure Romero wanted to go hard as most movies or remakes today. You cant compare a classic against the 90's version as both were shocking to watch in their own right. However considering how tame it may appear today, Romero's 68 version will always be shocking without all the exaggerated screams, blood, guts, and gore you see in todays movies. Romero's version is a Masterpiece.
Tom Savannis version was a bit over the top at times. The rewrite and subtle changes scene per scene was amazing. Amazing because Romero himself was present during the shoot guiding Savinnis hand along the way.
One of Tom Savini's tricks was to use what we knew about the first movie against us. The staggering old man in the beginning, we're certain it's the first zombie. Nope. Just some poor guy in shock. They drive to the gas pump...but the key doesn't work. There's a body upstairs...but also a zombie.
I kinda forgot but I take it that they were looking for that gas pump key the whole time?
Yeah, and earlier, when shit began to hit the fan, they had realized they had gotten the wrong key when they went to get gas from the pump to fill up a vehicle and get out - leading to Tom shooting the gas pump and unintentionally blowing everything up instead.
They didn't know where it was. Ben was laughing at the irony of all the bloodshed and needless death of the group.
TIL he says "They got that right."
Not, They god damn right, as I previously thought.

What a tragic end
Tony Todd is a star!
I was in Washington, PA the other day and visited the cemetery and passed by the house this was filmed in and it was awesome plus crazy to be in and near these areas.
Tragically underrated movie, the 1990 "Night" remake.
Cooper was right the safest place was the basement aside from the zombie daughter FANTASTIC remake and the change with Barbara was awesome almost Ripley in a way
Ben was also right that the basement was a death trap.
It can be effective but also be extremely bad if they do break in because then you're really screwed and you have no way out. I'd say the best option was the attic, because that gives you the advantage of the high ground from zombies.
The zombies in this film were scary but I like this version of Ms Coopers death by Ben she's creepy coming outta pure darkness as a zombie this scene scared me
He found the pump key 🔑
Too soon
Hhahahahahahhahahahahahhahaaahaahhahahhahah!!!!!!!!! Then he lost his sanity right when the lightbulb went out, brilliant acting and filmmaking!
Everything could have been avoided if someone had just found the goddamn keys.
Most zombie apocalypse media operates in a perpetual state of Murphy's Law: "Everything that can go wrong, _will_ go wrong," and this movie is certainly no exception. It happened in Night of the Living Dead '68, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead '90 and well beyond. "If only," or "If ____ just," are two phrases that seem to haunt the actions and consequences of those attempting to survive; hell, _if only_ they found the attic entrance earlier they might've been able to wait out the night and get rescued, and _if Harry just_ had the balls to put his turned daughter out of her misery he, Ben and Barbara could've at least had a better chance to survive together.
DurradonXylles Ben actually(well, it looked that way) tried to give Harry another chance to redeem himself when he told him to shoot his daughter who was already nothing but a walking corpse and not to mention how she tried to maul Barbara who actually DID put Sarah down.
@@DurradonXylles exactly...Harry had a good idea with hiding in the attic because the dead wouldn't have a way to reach them since he had pulled the cord up with him. I would love to see this movie remade but with the added what ifs.

Ben does his absolute best to get everyone out alive, only to be shot twice by a man he was trying to help. Then he's left trapped in a cellar bleeding to death while a radio message advises him the Apocalypse has begun-at which point he discovers the gas key they needed to survive, just hanging there. While the walking dead try to break down the cellar door and kill and eat him, best case in that order. Welcome to Hell. No wonder he finally lost it at the end...
I think that his biggest flaw is that in both version, he was quite bossy.
Although his intentions were quite noble, he wanted to be the only one giving orders, without paying attention to others opinions.
@@Euskalbikoizketak Harry Cooper wasn't better. Take it from his and Ben's respective points of view. There's no how to manuel to survive in an Zonmbie Apocalypse in these movies. Cooper wanted to keep his family safe, but was reluctant to help the others. Ben was trying to keep everyone in the group alive. In an actual scenario, would the cellar or attic work for long? Who knows? Maybe.

0:33 every zombie has their own story
It sucked that ben had to die, but atleast he didn't die mistaken for as a zombie.
Yet, its sad that he went as equally insane.
But, this is just what factors into a era that gave birth to my favorite inclusion in almost anything.
What else could you do but laugh when you finally find the right God damn keys...
Note the two zombies that fought over a rat that the other one had found.
Despite how noble Ben was, he was as stubborn about staying above ground as Cooper was about the cellar. So much so Ben probably didn't even consider checking the cellar for the gas pump keys.
To this day the one part I still find really funny was one of the Zombies was a dead drug user you can clearly see the syringe still in his arm.
Yep. ODed and died.
And everything going from bad to worse in the film's situation at the farmhouse is all Mr. Cooper's fault.
1:01 he's like hey wanted some😡😡🤣
By the way, I highly recomend getting the Australian BR version that was released several years ago. It has a great video quality and some never seen extras.
1:02 that zombie is yelling at that other zombie for eating the poor god damn mouse
No . Because the zombie eating mouse wasn't sharing the same food with him .
Only Tony Todd could have done Duane Jones’ character justice. This entire scene in one shot shows just how true that is.
1:02 this is so funny man 😂😂😂
It's funny how there's a subtle implication with this film that the undead plague is supernatural in origin. Not only does anyone who dies reanimate regardless of whether or not they were bitten, but it also reanimates corpses that were already dead, even the ones isolated in buried coffins. It's probably some necromantic curse or biblical punishment.
People hate on this remake for some reason, just gotta remember, George & company didn’t have a copyright on the original and that’s why it’s public domain, Savini and George did this to finally get the money they deserved, and John Russo as well!

If your in a situation like this do the fallowing
1:don’t try to board up the house or make loud noises of you have to close all the blinds and turn out the lights
2: look for the keys for the gas search all rooms, drawers, cabinets, especially the basement.
3: if you can’t drive or stay at the house, take only the supplies you need like some food, water, guns with ammunition, and walk to help. Stay in the shadows and don’t make loud noise the zombies are slow and dumb.
Won't work. 1) Zombies can "smell" you and track you that way; they don't have to see or hear you. They can hunt just as well in the dark as by daylight -- and advantage YOU don't have -- so turning out all lights actually disadvantages the humans. 2) Being in an un-barricaded house is arguably worse than staying in the open, b/c the lines of sight are so much shorter -- witness the several times Ben and Barbara were surprised by zombies at short range inside the house, just in the opening minutes. Few humans in an un-barricaded house will live to find the keys -- and those that do live will be too busy to look while fighting off zombies, who are free to approach.
@@roberthaworth8991 Depends on the timing. Barricading isn't a bad idea unless there are already zombies in the area. They'll hear and start coming. Depending on the size of the building, you may never be able to finish in time to stop them. Too many windows to board up.
