Thanks so much to all my Patrons for making this video possible!
#bernth #guitar #guitarist
I was relieved that it wasn't me on your laptop screen. ;)
Ay, dude, you are an EXCELLENT player!!!
I started at 10 years old and did the same thing. Unfortunately, I grew up in the 80’s, so I didn’t have the wealth of knowledge available at my fingertips like today.
@@duncaninglis3806 pretty sure he is giving him props.
At first I thought it was strange you released a video roasting some amateur, until I saw it was actually a retrospective on your own playing lol. After many years of not playing, and playing pretty terribly now that I'm starting up again, it is encouraging to see that you're such a nice dude. Keep it up man, you rock.
that's not really a retrospective about his journey with the guitar, it's actually an ad for his online course!
i'm not even mad, i've watched the entire thing and not so many can swank about getting me watching a 9min+ ad.
That's definately something!
Nice last name
@@TegaraMusic A very, very, very rare thing on social media nowadays, especially on UA-cam.
I have some videos of me playing a few years ago, and I honestly can't watch them 😂
I know everyone begins like this, but man, i hard watching when it's yourself
Absolutely I agree and weren't them the days though with your buds and jamming pick that guitar up my friend it's the best medicine ever 🎸
I saw the video title and I thought you myself, "there's no way my guy is roasting another guitar player, it's not his style" and then boom roasting himself as his own worst critic 👍🏼 this guy is gold
Just look how happy you were man! You can just tell by the smiles you was gunna commit everything to it.
Felt so happy when I realised you weren't actually about to rip some poor kid in two like some UA-camrs would, great video mate crazy to see how far you've come and you're using your mistakes to help out the rest of us and the give the next generation of shredders some help and confidence in their playing!!
This is pretty inspirational , to see how you began and to see how freaking awesome you are now, going from the kid that really had no idea, to a man playing flawlessly in front of thousands of people live and teaching people step by step. Seriously kudos to you sir. Peace.

Dont be so hard on yourself man. Your smile in the beginning says it all. It took balls to post that vid. Im sure there are alot of kids, and some adults, who found it inspirational. I did, and Im 49.........Sharing what youve learned, along with the encouragement you put out makes you not just a great guitarist, but a great musician as well. You def are Metal Bernth....\m/
P.S........ at 2:11, you almost nailed the intro for Loves a Bitch-Quiet Riot.....Give it a listen...Not bad at all for a beginner, right? HaHa!
I wish I had video footage of my younger years, circa 26 years ago lol. Unfortunately, viral videos wasn't a thing back then lol. Nice show of a humble being my friend
What does viral videos have to do with you recording yourself playing guitar? There were video cameras in the 90's.
Just wanted to thank you bernth for the videos, thanks to them I’ve been progressing past all the tough barriers that I was stuck at.
Hope to see your channel and performances grow!
Crosses fingers “This better not be me, this better not be me…”
I am 30+ years and still playing like your first videos.
What a fantastic set of videos to have. I wish I had a set of videos documenting my progress over the years. It is amazing to see you progress from beginner to master and thank you for guiding players with your expertise.
The Grin at 1:00 says it all! Dude was hooked!
You persevered and prevailed over crummy tchnique to get where you're at now.
Inspiration to all.
Really cool content. Super clear and detailled, while you point out the adjustments required you instantly bring the exercises to work on these. A little bit of humour, true technique advices. That's a 10 out of 10 ? :D Keep up the good work
Love how much you’re enjoying playing even way back!! Great to see you’re progress and that you never lost that initial enthusiasm 🤟❤️
I love the fact that you still have your childhood guitar videos and use it as example for making everyone plays better. Bernth you are the real MVP🔥
Hey man, I just subscribed now and I feel bad because I’ve watched a lot of your content and I learn something new every time I watch your stuff. Like the thing you said about keeping your picking hand closed and not letting your fingers out? That made my skill level go up in a considerable way, instantly. And I’ve gotten some exercises from your videos that I practice until the pick breaks sometimes
I doubt that 12 year old you is the WORST guitar player you've ever seen... we all suck when first starting out. I still suck, and will probably never get as good as I want to be but I keep trying to get better. you demonstrate some really respectable technique and abilities Bernth. I should follow your lessons more closely. cheers buddy
Heartening to see you struggled too, but geez you improved quickly. I check your tips out to help my playing, only been at this since 1990 and I still suck.
Great stuff Bernth! I've said it before: you're a real inspiration to this 63 y.o. kid.
So hopefully I'll catch up to this level by about 80. I reckon I can give that a go! 😉😁🎸🎶🔊🤘
This was a really fun video to watch, to know that you're not afraid to admit your faults to a vast majority of people. This just inspires me to play even more! Hopefully more people will find it just as great 😁
Thank you Bernth. Very cool video. I am a terrible guitar player, but a decent drummer and like you between 13 and 14 is when I started to progress from awful drummet to half decent. So I can relate even though I played a different instrument. I will check out your other videos to help me break some of my bad habits that I incorporate into my a guitar playing. Cheers
Dude i love ur videos N method of teaching, great insight on real problem areas at any level. I happily just bought ur 10 week course, I can't wait to get started. I've been a player since I was 14, been in some bands and done some indi stuff and am ok as a lead player but I want to take that next step and being havnt been playing as much the last few years. Your course and videos got me excited to play again and shred. Thanks man.
To me, the advancement rate is absolutely incredible and hard to believe.
I do not dismiss the work you have put in but..You are definitely a super talented person.
Hey Bernth, I need some advice!
I’ve recently bought myself an electric guitar and wanted to restart playing. I had my first year of lessons ages ago, never put actual effort into learning the instrument then just played metal covers.
Now I want to restart from scratch and properly learn everything from how to hold the pick, the fretting hand, notes scales and such to get to the point where I can play modern metalcore stuff and metal in general.
Which path/lessons would you suggest? I know you have courses but I’m curious on what would be best for me cause I’m this weird situation where I can play some medium difficult metal stuff and still got muscle memory but I want to learn it properly like if I were new to the instrument.
Awesome DUDE! Reminds me of my childhood shredding. Great video. 👍
Your flexibility and hand position evolved to professional style.
I'm attempting to move over from bass to guitar. It's so much fun, but extremely difficult as well. String spacing and muting has been a nightmare so far. This video is very helpful. Much obliged.
Very cool approach showing old video of yourself to critic. The beginners especially need that ambition that can be thwarted. Super playing to.
You are such an amazing player and your humbleness is an inspiration , So cool to see how far you have progressed in such a short time!
I may be painful for you, but it is inspiring to others like me. I was that kid once too... and for the most parts, I still am.
Using a quote from Pirates of the Caribbean: "But you HAVE seen him."
Very innovative and unique video - thanks for sharing. I often think about how I, now at 55 years of age, am just becoming able to play some of the stuff that 20-something guitarist mastered early on in their careers
Bernth, I get amazed with you. No more words needed to describe admiration. Just a question. What happens with the guitar positioned in the right leg?. How do you maintain the posture of the fretting hand in the 15th fret area, way up to the bridge?
I don't get this! Can you help me please?
I love your humility. Too many people take themselves too seriously.
You gotta start somewhere. I guess it just depends on how much you're willing to put into it. I'm very glad you never gave up man 👍🏽😎 I appreciate you sharing your discoveries and talent. Helluva slinger!!!
Berndt du bist jetzt aus meiner Sicht der beste Gitarrist überhaupt was Technik und Spielweise angeht. Du bist einer meiner größten Idole und Vorbilder!!! Du bist der Wahnsinn und mach weiter so!! Deine Videos san supa!! \m/
Liebe Grüße aus Korneuburg (NÖ) ;-)
All I have to do to revisit how awkward it was . I try playing left handed ! Man then I switch and move on lol. Discovered your channel pretty close to the beginning and thank you . You have been a huge help !
You lead guitarists have different goals musically than us rythm guitarists. I'll speak strickly for myself. I love playing the rythm part as the soundscape so the lead parts can fill in the rest of the sound. I love creating the world for the leads to exist in. That's all. Great video.
This vid really shows there's hope for all of us. Great video
been over an year of teaching my self how to play but i still dont feel at home on fretboard.
i mute strings at times barchords are a nightmare and i strain my left hand in 5 min of playing/practicing.
my ring fingure for whatevr reason. and also all the pro players when they play thr fingures seem to be in line on fretboard but my ring fingure tends to bend away a little.
how do i improve on that?
Great video Man U came a long way!!! Your a awesome player stay metal!! 🤘🤘
Haha this is gold! I love how introspective and humble you are dude. I play ok but I'm still not a guitarist, my technique is terrible 🤣 one thing I have learned from you is how important picking exercises are!
The amount of humility in this vid cracks me up. Keep on rocking Bernth 🤘🏾🤘🏾
2:12 that's freezing moon bro, iconic black metal intro, nice XD
very much inspired by your video, from an amateur to professional guiter player.thanks for the motivation.🎸🎵🎶🎵🎶.
Thanks for this video I have just started playing guitar a month ago and my picking motion was the same as those old clips and I keep dropping it accidentally. Lol
First I really like your channel !!! 🤘🤘🤘
Great video!!!
Second, I must give you a little tip regarding photography, if you look around 40 seconds from the beginning of the video and also before, you have a small stain on your forehead.
This means that you probably have dirt on the camera sensor or lens.
Recommends cleaning or using a more open aperture to blur it.
Continue to produce great content !!!
And I wish I had 1/2 of your guitar skills👍👍👍
Love your videos!, Just an advice, try cleaning the sensor of your camera, there are some spots on the image and sometimes they land on your face. Greetings from Costa Rica. :)
It's always cool to go back and see how much we've improved over the years. It's easy to forget all the little challenges we've faced since the beginning and adjustments we've made to get to where we are.
Really cool video. I'm glad you didn't roast some innocent kid on the internet haha.
"...technique is absolutely horrendous." But look at how HAPPY you were! I love that stage of learning ❤️ Every tiny discovery is pure joy!
You mention posture I am not sure I have found a video on that if you have made one. One of the things I have a problem with is I practice sitting down then I stand up use the guitar strap and my playing goes back downhill big time.
I love how this humorous, constructive, and kind toward yourself. Humble beginnings.
That's awesome, and very humble of ya,most people doesn't want people to know who they were, they only worry about who the are now,
I've found that i really only need to use my thumb as support for barres.
If you're already playing in a position where you're comfortable with your thumb wrapped around the top you can use it to fret the low E string to make 5 finger chord shapes.
If you're playing in standard the C shape actually turns into a slidable chord that sounds good on every fret if you use your thumb to turn the E/A strings into a power chord (132013)
Ugh tried to do the spider exercise and pinky is like crooked and wont go straight on the string, its like angled. Cant do the exercise cause my pinky is muting the next string. I need to like break my finger to make it straight or something lol. Any exercises for this?
I was thought you were sponsored by Lenovo haha. Btw you had inspired me with that double humbuckers and roasted maple neck \m/.
I have the top part of my right index finger missing. I need assistance with holding the pick properly. Alternatively i am naturally left handed, do you know if there are decent prosthetics so i can actually play left handed?
"yeah, I was a pretty weird kid."
...
"im still weird."
I love this quote 😂❤️
Love it man we all have to look at ourselves and see how we've progressed. Cool power chords I was the same way I just didn't have smartphone back then to record my well let's just say a very bad guitar player so cool man thanks for all the nice tips I'm getting better everyday you're the man I appreciate it thank you
Do you still have that warlock or did you sell it? And can you show all ur guitars
Man you are brave to share the early days 😆. The second younger you was pretty decent.
I play like the second you 😂. I only have one arpeggio down, but I need to finally learn some more! I still love power chords though. I started when I was 15 and I'll be turning 47. I have never taken a music class. Its kind of a long time experiment. I play by ear mostly or free jam
I like your vids and personality. Keep em coming!
Cheers!
This is crazy. At 5:24 you explain how important it is to use your finger tips to fret notes.
It caught attention immediately because I have recently watched a video from David Wallimann entitled "Makes such a BIG difference!", where he describes the importance of flat fingers on the strings to get better control. I started to adjust my finger position and convince myself that I'm getting better tone control and now you tell me it's wrong!
Hey BERNTH, I have this problem where I strain my thumb all the time by constantly putting a lot of pressure on the neck of my guitar. And I was wondering if you have any tips for this?
had the same problem. i fixed it by using lower gauge strings and adjusting the truss rod. a good practice is to play on frets 12+ with a "thumbs up" posture.
To learn to actually play well you need to have a well set up guitar.
If your guitar's action is too high or you have other problems, some technique problems will become your habit.
@@sashabagdasarow497 thank you very much for the reply first off. I have gotten a guitar that costs 3 times as much since I made that comment and it’s gotten a lot better. Thank for the recommendation anyway because it worked.
You've gotten considerably better since you started. Just subscribed and totally dig your channel.
Cooles Video,so sieht man dass das alles halt Zeit braucht. Jeder fängt so an :) Rest ist halt Übung und Disziplin. LG Nty
Mad respect for showing "cringy" videoes from the past,, I gotta say the look on your face while watching it was golden haha. Man, I have a serious hard time showing anything that I do, to others - "What if I fail/sound like shit?!" Fun fact is that most people probably think any playing is good :D .. or is like they say in Guitar Hero "Your mom doesn't count as a fan?"
I've been playing for 26 years now self taught with Metallica, Celtic frost, etc from cassettes. Never really practiced on scales. A little bit of blues solos here and there. Over the years I have prided myself with how clean I play compared to others around me. Now I mostly play dsbm and doom. Wish I would have recorded myself through the years as well. Would have been cool to see the progress and where I needed help at the time.
Really educational and great content especially for new guitarists!
So I'll tell Ola that you called his pick grip the banana grip!!! Awesome video!
2:35 I have a song that I wrote in 2012, when I still had my high voice, so the growls and screams are super cringe, but also really funny to listen to.
Anyway, I believe we're the most creative when we don't know what to do and just do stuff.
8:50 Oh I learned alot by trying to play songs that were way out of my comfort zone, but as you said, it gets really hard to kick those bad habbits after that time.
10 years since I started playing guitar and I still dont use the right posture. I'm weird about posture and do better with my own awkward posture though I really should work on my other bad playing habits.
Honestly this brought back memories idk how I stuck with guitar when I sucked so bad and learning muting and soloing for years and I kept doing it anyways
I can't even imagine tryin to learn guitar all over again
I also heavily neglected my pinky at the beginning, still having to work on it
I like the vids you’re sharing 🎸🔥very much 🎼appreciated!! 🎶 😂 the flying pinkie n banana grip! Fun n amazing tips n grips🤣🎶⚡️
Thoroughly enjoyed this on my lunch break 😊 thanks again B!....#1
That just gave me the motivation to keep going. Thanks!
I have a weird problem, and it MIGHT be the guitar, more likely me. Key time I notice is the main Enter Sandman riff, which is one of my warm up things. Ring finger on 7th fret A, but at the nd of the riff chunk, when my middle and index fingers need to go to the low E, the string has this weird thing where it will *slip off the fret completely* as I attempt to land on it with my finger tip. It’s in tune….I double check the tuning most of the times I get it out, and certainly if I haven’t played it yet that day. I’m so confused on why that happens
all i can see is this video gives me motivation to keep on going till i get better at playing. thank you 🙏
I learnt to use my thumb directly behind my fingertips by playing with very heavy strings. I've played like that ever since, and didn't even think it was good technique.
2:11 freezing moon 😭
what about hendrix's and frusciante's technique with the thumb?
Great journey!!! Gratulations
I could never stick to doing those chromatic or scale exercises. Nothing makes me drop the guitar back on it's stand faster than practicing scales. Then again, that's probably why I'm not a legitimate guitar player :p
that's not necessarily true. you really just need a tune or song that works out the same thing. that or learn the caged system which is right off the bat more musical than a scale
@@dragoncove5308 It's entirely true, for me. I'm not saying it doesn't work, clearly it does for a lot of people. I just find it way too boring to stick to.
Everything I've learned on guitar aside from starter chords came from trying to learn songs or parts of them. I play guitar to unwind and have fun more than to actually learn the guitar.
@@JM-ym8mm I mostly mean the part about you not being a legitimate guitarist. Everyone learns differently and that's sort of what I was saying. I'm saying don't discount yourself because you think scales are boring.
@@dragoncove5308 Well, shit. Thanks for the nice words. It's alright though, we can't all be great at everything :). Tempering your expectations is good sometimes. I don't beat myself up about it but it does deepen my appreciation towards those that do have something special artistically!
LOL I hadn't notice I was not suscribed until now. I've watched, STUDIED, liked and commented your videos.
I don't have to look for the worst guitar player, I just see him every day in the mirror
“I was a weird kid…. I’m still weird” 🤣 love the video man, gives me motivation.
Hate to ask questions in the comments.... Do any of you have recommendations for pinkie independence excerises?
Bernth has tons of them on his channel and Patreon. 👌
I was terrified that the “worst guitar player” was me.
Thats crazy good from 13 to 14 crazy progress😳.you must play a lot👌👌👌👌👌
We all have to start somewhere! It's to pay off with practice and above all a true love for it no matter what you do!
No pro fell from the sky, that's what my granny used to tell me and she was perfectly right. Thats why I watch your videos, thats why I still practice guitar, thats why I share my low level guitar vids on YT without any hesitations. If you could skip 10 years ahead and watch your vids you would still discover some mistakes that you wouldnt do anymore but hey, thats the process. Keep on doing your stuff, I already learned a lot from you and following your guide greatly improved my playing in a short amount of time. Rock on and pls continue to be awesome 😁
You’re great man, thanks for sharing this with us.
Live in Ukraine so kinda not having good time now🙈 but bought a guitar and your videos are helpful
Downloading the Patreon!
with my first guitar, I had all the strings tuned to the same note lol. Max distortion, and barring all the strings :D
I didn’t expect that one. It takes a big pair to roast yourself and that kind of honesty has become rare these days. I’ve respected you as a musician, but this earns respect as a human.
This was really inpirational. one thing that keeps me away from my guitar is shoulder and neck pain. i try to sit and play with good posture but i somehow always get pain, even with straps on. anyone know what to do?
Even after 10 years I still have some really bad habits I know hold me back but at this point they are almost ingrained into my muscle memory.
Useful and funny video! Thanks a lot, Bernth!
I started on a $16 dollar amigo acoustic with 5 strings. I played it for 3 years with no lessons. Before internet. No one around could play. I leaned to tune and play ear. Idk how I leaned to tune to standard it blows my mind. I was getting it turned after 6 months. But I wasn’t stepping down the 2nd from bottom string. I was tuning it to the 5th fret like all the strings and I wasn’t in standard. Than somehow by learning nirvana songs by ear I leaned to tune to standard and step down my last two strings to the 4th fret. Idk how I figured that all out as a kid in my own with nothing but a unplugged in New York nirvana cd and great southern trendkill pantera cd. Idk 🤷🏼♂️ On my 4th year at 14 years I got my first electric, it was a Washburn with a Washburn bad dog 20watt 1-8 amp. It had distortion and I was a rock star in my head at that point. Going from that shotty acoustic to that new Washburn electric was like ohhhhh now I see lol. Than I leaned a lot of Hendrix and dime bag licks. Learned the ssb and lead licks. It took me years of playing to get half way decant because I had no lessons at all. Once the internet hit and everyone was learning from UA-cam I was stupid and hated on it. I was like “I Didn’t YoUTUbE I tOuGhT mY sELf bLA blA Bla” I should have jumped in the UA-cam train and learned cords and shapes and theory and all that shit instead of being hard headed for another 10 years. So now that I’m 37 and seeing players like you and max ostro who haven’t even been alive as long as I’ve been playing that are waaaat better than me. I’m like Ok. I’ve been playing for 27 years, but I need lessons lol. So 5 months ago I started watching UA-cam and meaning the right way. Even tho played daily and played lead for a band and can play really well. I need to learn right
Your videos are invaluable. If I had grown up with these vids, I'd be a guitar God by now
From there to now shows what progress looks like
