Bernth, I’m reviewing your patreon options and I would like to join. Additionally, is it possible to hire you as a consultant? I’m not looking to take a lot of time from you, I just would like to get a few sessions of consultation on setting up my home studio, nothing major, but I keep having minor issues with recording levels from guitar input, pedals, interface, kemper to Daw, for example. Thanks for all your great teaching content, it’s gold! 🤘Technik😎
31 years of playing now! (And not ons za Grampspaz guitars guys! ) It's amazing! I've never altered my pick grip before tonight. And I've always had open hand for palm muting. So I tried your grip. Did a few drills with the new grip and holy shit All of the sudden I started landing simple runs at 125bpm 130bpm. I'm impressed man! Thanks! What I would have given fire UA-cam when I was a kid learning guitar. Back then it was, 'wait for the monthly issue of Guitar World magazine, buy books from local music stores, and trade info with friends. Crazy change compared to now.
Duuuuuude.... after 21 years of learning the guitar, finally, you are the one who is able to teach me! Your lessons are nothing but awesome and I'm making more progress with them in the last few months than I have made in the last 10 years without them. I applaud you and thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I taught myself how to play in high school and have been playing for about 15 years now. I got far with no real strong technical foundation or lessons, but I've always been capped by speed. I just assumed I didn't have it in me to shred. I stumbled upon the BERNTH's picking technique video and had an AH-HA moment. I had weak technique and I was holding the pick wrong! I feel like I finally have a path to playing stuff I've always wanted to play, and I'm now taking building a technical foundation seriously. I probably thought that was boring before, but what you gain from it is so worth it. Playing with consistency, confidence, and without strain makes playing so much more enjoyable. I'm taking it slow, but things are finally making sense.
Through all the guitar teachers I've had over the years, no one has ever dug this deep on technique. I feel inclined to share it with other guitar players I know. So glad I found your channel- thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I was at my local guitar shop, testing out a pedal, when the shop owner was mindblown by the technik tips I picked up from this video. We talked and he ended up giving me the keys to his shop! Thanks to this video, no doubt! Watch till the end, you might end up with a free guitar shop...
switching to .007s and .008s made me focus on having a lighter touch. That made a world of difference in my playing. I think a scalloped fretboard also forces you to have a light touch as well.
Trick #2 combined with your way of holding the pick and closed hand... this is MAGIC I was always playing with an open hand, anchoring with my pinky, and my index and thumb holding the pick were always kind of "unstable", but somehow I managed, alternate picking was working good enough at least but I've been practicing sweeps for some time, they were giving me quite some trouble, it's like you said, it felt that sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, it was kinda random and then I tried your technique - suddenly the sweeps became almost effortless, and I can do them consistently well, WTF how such a small change can give such a leap in progress, it's really magic...
Just started learning to play. I’m 62 and I’ve always wanted to learn how to play. The biggest challenge for me is fingering the fret board. I just can’t seem to angle my fingers right, especially when I’m practicing the spider crawl. Going to practice some of these techniques and hope it’ll help me or maybe I’m just too old 😊
I don't know if anyone has suggested this to you, but boading balls helped my fretting. You can also do exercises with one where you hold it in your palm and touch every finger to it when you're watching tv or whatever. Making sure your wrist is relatively straight instead of cocked toward yourself is also important.
If you sit while you practice (and you’re right handed) hold your guitar on your left leg, not the right one. It will bring your left hand to a much more comfortable place as you try to keep your left thumb as close to the center of the neck as possible (on top of the skunk stripe if you play a strat), not over the top of the neck.
Snapping motion tip about string transition is very helpful for me. (Ending with an up stroke on the lower string and then having to play a down stroke on the higher string.) That kind of string transition has been the most difficult thing for me for many years. Thanks to your advice, now I know what to focus on when practicing. I'll Pick up my guitar and practice right now. Thank you BERNTH.🤟
Thank you bernth! Have been struggling with fire and ice at a low bpm for months... Finally I progressed! Light touches, minimal wrist movements really helps... Something I never thought of cause I always exaggerated the wrist movements and swayed left and right... My speed and precision increased with just light touches and keeping my wrist steady...
You're just amazing Bernth! This is the only video that helped me improve My playing, I wish that the greats like; e.g. Malmsteen, petrucci and Campbell emphasize more on proper picking execution 20 years ago. Anyway, thanks Bernth for delivering again!
Hi Bernth. Just want to say a big thanks for all of your videos. Not only have you done them for free, but they are not junk videos like some that I have seen. I also love the fact that you don't just show off. I am not yet a patreon, but you will see my name pop up next year. All the best to you and thanks again.
Thank you for sharing all of your Technik. One of the best online guitar tutorial ever. Back to back solid videos full pack with great useful information. When you share a lot of knowledge, you will receive many new knowledge in the process. This great positive cycle will never end. Thank you. 🙏🏽
Great video. I'm trying out the closed hand technique as recommended. I really struggle with stopping my thumb helping my picking, which inevitably leads to sloppiness. I know Yngwie manages, but I lack his God given ability. I can already see in the 15 minutes I've been trying, it does seem to show some promising potential. Thanks Bernth.
I've tried and tried the closed hand picking like he does and it makes my hand hurt. It's more difficult for me to play like that. I think some people CAN play easily like that but other just can't. People hand shapes are different. I play with the open palm.
@@amazingthingsfromaroundthe2057 there's definitely no single correct way. Definitely go for what's right for you. I've been struggling to stop my thumb joining the party, initially this does seem to do the trick of keeping those micro finger movements at bay. It's amazing when you see how much thumb movement Yngwie has when he picks, from what I can see, it tends to be when he economy picks during string changes. It obviously works well for him, being as he is a virtuoso. I on the other hand need as much help as I can get!!
@@davidyates8880 I see lots of people playing with the closed hand but I just can't make it work. And also just as many great guitarist play with the open hand. I agree that go with what works best for you. For me it's extremely uncomfortable playing with the closed hand. I also choke down on my pick a lot. Sometimes so much I do pinch harmonics when I don't mean to.
Ikr? That was the best advice I've heard in a long time! I had the same issue with the thumb and when I stopped doing that thumb motion it was kind of disapointing at first, I couldn't play at higher bpms like I used to but with more practice it feels way better now :) still not as fast, but it feels more effortless this way. The momentum does most of the job lol
Great Lesson as always. At some point you should do and the 'How to Mix Major and Minor Scales for Impro'. It will be really interesting. Bernth, do you know that Adam Jones from Tool posted a short clip of your Dopamine video to his insta story with a comment 'This guy!'? You should pay a tribute to him with a riff or lick lesson. Bernt you are too good! You are so extremely technical and play fantastically well and i are not even jealous because no one can be so good 😁 when I play it is a gentleman's string sound and tangles me in the strings, but hey it still swings and rocks fat.
One of the most difficult things in my guitar routine, is actually building an effective one. It would be awesome if you could share tips on how to create an effective routine (I know you already shared content about how frequently to practice exercises, but still I'm struggling with building a programme).

I like how you recognize that and I'm gonna go forward now with some of your exercises that address this. Thank you 😎🎸🎶
I've only very recently found your channel and I have to say it is awesome. I come from a pop/rock background and I want to get into shredding and this video is great. Everything you need to know in one video. Even if I don't succeed in shredding I feel that a lot of these techniques will help my guitar playing in general. Thanks for the great content.
Thank you, Bernth! Your videos show me, how degenerated my technique has become. I´ve started 25+ years ago and was quite fast. As the years went by, I became absolutely sloppy and "fake". Now, I start again with the basics! Especially playing with the metronome, keeping a steady alternate picking and most important: having a good left hand grip and therefore putting the guitar way higher on the belt. Looks way more uncool, but feels amazingly more natural! THX, Bernth!!!👍
Regarding Trick 5: It was really unnatural for me to keep the pick parallel to the string when playing with a closed group and thought if the pick was at an angle, it was bad technique. Really happy to know its now ^_^
This is epic man, u always have the most easy to digest lessons of some of the most important techniques. Keep up the videos man! Been playing 13 years and I’ve seen a lot of progression in my playing since I discovered ur channel 🤘
Thanks Bernth! These are really awesome tips. I saved the files. And will be incorporating into my guitar workouts daily. Your Patreon is really an awesome value!
Love your videos, very descriptive, thank you for all the explanation on techniques one can apply and do it wrong always not realizing it, now I have to learn all over again, but it'll be a pleasure, thank you!
Great tips! And more exercises to work into my daily routine. I can't thank you enough! One other consideration for using a 'light' touch with the fretting hand is the notes are less likely to go sharp. I really suffered from 'gorilla gripping' my guitar neck for a long time (and still struggle with it), and I always wondered why I sounded so 'out of tune'. Most guitars suffer from being a little sharp with the first few frets, and pressing hard on the strings *really* bends it sharp. A light touch Technik is SO important!
The closed hand technique makes a big difference even just trying it for 10 minutes! Do you find that you still use open hand at all or do you use closed hand more for fast speeds? I can really see how closed hand can be helpful in speed runs but maybe not as much in just mid tempo riffing?
Thank you Bernth! Thank you so much! Thank you for these little details lesson. It helps a lot! Thank you. I can imagine myself shredding with happy tears in the future. Lol
The thumbnail picture shows a very important aspect of the fretting hand technik which is angling the pinky against the fretboard. This has personally helped me a lot with the 134 type of legato licks. Not sure, if you already talked about it.
I’m new to guitar playing and I want to learn as much as I can from people who know the proper techniques and methods. I’ve been training my fingers with D’Addario guitar finger strengthening device. Been practicing pentatonic scales and metal rhythm. I sound extremely terrible but determined to learn from people like this musician here.
To be honest I am quite shocked with the fact that having the pick on an angle made it easier! I was under the assumption it would make it harder and was trying to play with pick as parallel to the string as possible! Well, definitely trying that one out tonight.
I think alot of people have different picking styles because it's all on what feels comfortable to u. Like of u have wrist problems it might be hard to hold ur pick a certain way. Also I thinks it's even more to do with that most guitar players are self taught lol I also think people like to use the open hand style with the pinky as a pivet finger on the Pickguard for palm muting. If u look at a guitar technique teaching book they tell u to hold the pick how he is though , which I've started using a jazz pick to work on that style more because it is a better method for economy picking and sweeping.
It's so true that this video is a life changer, THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS SIR!.... I just discover that my guitar picking hand is wrong now it is better for me to play when my hand is close...I'm struggling finding the right channel to improve my skills then i find yours.
hey bernth, could you do a video on guitar set up? or maybe a snippet on your action and the trade off between low action and buzzing, and how much fret buzz is acceptable or normal with low action?
Hey Bernth your lesson really helped Me a whole lot! Not only your good but your name should etched on the wall just like the egyptian gods. Thanks for helping me achieve My goals with this video. Unfortunately for me, I've sold all My Jacksons and Ibanez in exchange for 2 Gibson Les Pauls because I'm getting old hahaha!
i've been trying to work on relaxing my fretting hand when playing, i already play with a relaxed picking hand but whenever theres a fast part , my fretting hand tenses up so much , that's one thing i want to improve as soon as possible

Love technik! Thanks bro!
Excellent tips, as always!
Thanks for sharing those techniques,, ive learned a lots,,
To be honest I am quite shocked with the fact that having the pick on an angle made it easier! I was under the assumption it would make it harder and was trying to play with pick as parallel to the string as possible! Well, definitely trying that one out tonight.
best teaching videos on youtube
I think alot of people have different picking styles because it's all on what feels comfortable to u. Like of u have wrist problems it might be hard to hold ur pick a certain way. Also I thinks it's even more to do with that most guitar players are self taught lol I also think people like to use the open hand style with the pinky as a pivet finger on the Pickguard for palm muting. If u look at a guitar technique teaching book they tell u to hold the pick how he is though , which I've started using a jazz pick to work on that style more because it is a better method for economy picking and sweeping.
Awesome as always!
You are awesome, love your vids. They are important in my life

Can’t wait to go work on my technik
hey bernth, could you do a video on guitar set up? or maybe a snippet on your action and the trade off between low action and buzzing, and how much fret buzz is acceptable or normal with low action?
Hey Bernth your lesson really helped Me a whole lot! Not only your good but your name should etched on the wall just like the egyptian gods. Thanks for helping me achieve My goals with this video. Unfortunately for me, I've sold all My Jacksons and Ibanez in exchange for 2 Gibson Les Pauls because I'm getting old hahaha!
Can you do false harmonics pinch technique and show how versatile you can play to show
i've been trying to work on relaxing my fretting hand when playing, i already play with a relaxed picking hand but whenever theres a fast part , my fretting hand tenses up so much , that's one thing i want to improve as soon as possible
#Technik thank you for this video !! Your videos have helped me so much in my journey to become a better guitar player !!
