- Evening everyone
Been meaning to do a video on this for a little while! When I first heard one of our gangs had a leaf blower I was pretty pissed off, it just seems to be more and more things a brickie has to do! After seeing it in action I totally changed my mind, a couple of our gangs have them now and they really are quicker, easier and simpler and result in a much clean superstructure! They will pay for themselves in one plot!
What do you think? Yes or No, comment below

Next they will want you to get the mister sheen out and polish the wall ties. I’m glad I’m not on the trowel anymore. What a load of old bollocks 😂
😂😂
That’s all you hear these days. I agree to a certain extent that some things are getting a bit silly but what is wrong with an industry trying to improve? Plenty of social media groups slagging off major house builders yet when they want a good job and to go above and beyond people boot off. The industry can’t sit still, prices just need to reflect the changes we are being asked to deliver
@@Tone_Team N H B C trying too justify there jobs. Before this you use to have a clerk of the works who would of been an ex trades man and new what he was doing, now you got idiots who done a course . But not a course in commen sense. N H B C waist of skin🤪
cleaning cavity with a leaf blower, is that an item in the BoQ now?
Cleaning the cavities is. How you clean them is down to the individual
The best way to get a plot passed is to keep your working area tidy as ling as the inspector sees your scaffold is tidy he won’t even hardly look down the cavities
I agree, first impression of a plot and site are huge indicators of standard of work in my opinion
Most Brickys won’t buy a pair of gloves never mind a leaf blower, they’d sooner spend it on gear
The good ones will and those on price work with a brain will 👍🏻
It’s the brain part where the problem lies
😂 some are just resistant to change
I will be buying one for the "pure I've got leave blower factor" which in the eyes of the house builder indicates better gang regardless of trowel skill 🤣🤣
😂👍🏻👍🏻
Class idea and the makita seems ideal especially with long attachments lol 🍻👌🏻
It really is!
PiJ all tge way Tone, someone wise must of shown them that 😂
👨🏫
Leaf blower comes in handy if the bricks with holes have filled up with water aswell. We just used cut of gutters for our trays. Pull them out on a night dont drop abit of mortar. Wouldn’t waste more time with leaf blower. Time is money
Forgot to mention this is, it’s perfect for this too and saves sticking damp over the holes 👍🏻
Correct min who in right mind would run out and get wan other cost. And time on job bricks get jack shit for. Bit guttering on a rope few boards dropped down on ties etc nothing else needed. In general small hand held leaf blower retailing at £65-£75 bucks to buy. Has a multitude of use blow the dust of yours self any cutters battery’s tools using. Exactly pumps water out if put nozzle on. To side dewalt makita both down it. Big petrol for cavities no thanks lol. Any boys were interested tho the 54v dewalt blower has same power as most petrol models. If happens to use any the 54v tools and had batts. As bare unit £170.
👍🏻 prevention is certainly better than cure and all our gangs utilise cavity battens but the leaf blower is super handy to have in the van
I use a leaf blower , but I didn’t think to stick some pipe on to extend it 😂 that’s brilliant
BT Duct and Downpipe work a treat mateb
People on our firm are using celetex so block work has to go up first and the inspector wants the back of the brick work brushed as you can see down the cavity work that out
Some requests are just impractical and unnecessary. Not a huge fan of any type of insulation, you never get the money needed for it. It makes it difficult to clean the cavity, very time consuming. With cavities increasing to 150mm, 100mm rigid insulation will be come more and more common and will make it even harder for Brickies
Could ideal mate but should be able to keep cavity clean anyways mate
Yep, leaf blower should always be last resort but they are great
I use a milwaukee battery blower with 2 inch pipe, light as helll
Interesting.
I agree with the comment of why does it matter if there's a build up of motar. However we are now expected by nhbc to keep them pristine and it is a pain and time consuming cleaning them out.
I usually run a gutter in the bottom and pull it out. But still bits get in the cavity, or the gutter twists while pulling out etc..
I presume this will be done when it's semi dry? Or do you leave it a day?
A friend of mine has a blower, sthil one I think? I'm going to ask to borrow it and see for myself.
It seems like the outside can look like shit but if the cavitys are mint then you're in the nhbc good books !
I don’t disagree. There has always been a minimum upstand of trays yet me get an RI even for a tiny bit of mortar. I suppose from an inspection point of view it is hard to say what is acceptable build up. Maybe as long as it’s not above the tray it’s ok? I don’t know but it is getting harder 👍🏻
@@Tone_Team agree, if the build up is below the upstand it wouldnt cause damp issues and moisture can still escape. Perhaps its a thermal issue ? Although it must be minimal heat loss ?
I'll try the blower this week, if it's quick and easy then I'll get one.
Imagine telling bricklayers of the past they will one day need a leaf blower 😂
Can you do a video on the steel birdcages geez? Pro’s & cons, effectiveness, etc
👍🏻
Been doing it for ages tone
Few of our lads got them now, I try to convince people that don't have use them to get them but they think I'm bonkers 😜
Whats the script with it tony, do they just rattle the ties then loosen up the bottom with baton like normal then blow it all to the core holes. Im going to invest was thinking of maybe getting a battery pressure washer but not sure it would work if this is tried and tested ill get on this
Exactly that mate! We have tried Jet washers but our customers don’t like additional water being blown in the cavity, even if it is aimed at the tray. 👍🏻

💨
Leaf blower 🤣🤣🤣 behave ….Batten is more than enough to clean the trays even if there’s 100mm of shite in the cav the tray is still doing its job 🤔
Everyone says the same thing until they try it
@@Tone_Team I get that Tony but as a price Bricky for a national house builder we ain’t payed enough to do all that , so batten it is and I’ve never had a pull from NHBC yet .
@@2E0UDX but if it’s quicker then it’s a no brainer! Give it a go 😂
do you build houses to octagon developers standard ?
I dont understand the question, sorry
the house builders/developers called octagon specialise in building high end houses, the brick work and overall all finish is to a really good standard. they market their houses from 1m up 3m plus?
I have never heard from them mate, we are in south west, not sure where they operate
Why are they so intent on getting the tray spotless all of a sudden? Are older houses with trays having loads of problems now? No - they aren’t. So what is the point in spending the time and effort doing this? It’s just another load of nonsense from the NHBC
It’s an interesting point. There is a minimum upstand on the tray to allow for mortar build up yet we get an RI even if there is the slightest bit of muck in there! I don’t think we can simply say trays don’t need cleaning but I think there needs to be a bit of balance
@@Tone_Team yeah I’m not saying don’t clean them at all. But just keep it to what we usually do, give them a scrape and get what you can out through the coring holes. Agree with you on the upstand, it just proves my point really haha. The NHBC keep wanting more and coming up with new stuff all the time even though most of it is complete nonsense. The cynic in me would think maybe they’re doing this to try and justify their jobs…
@@Rotciv1929 ultimately NHBC are an insurance company, they will look at what results in the most claims and which ones are the most expensive and then make a huge effort to target that area! Unfortunately for us we built the shell of the house so loads can go wrong! Along with footings and roof coverings, superstructure will always be a big focus
@@Tone_Team their main focus should be on the quality of the materials imo. Most jobs in my area are concrete bricks these days, which are awful. So to combat that you have to put movement joints and train tracks everywhere. Surely just use a better quality brick? I know they’re only covering themselves but if you’ve got a 600mm upstand on the tray and 150mm build up of mortar you are never going to have a problem from it. Polishing the trays is silly
We don’t see many sites round our way with concrete bricks, there is one particular house builder that uses them exclusively. What many people don’t consider or appreciate is that you could use a handmade brick that costs a £1 rack or a standard housing brick for 35p each and it would have little to no bearing on the end price.
Can’t believe you guys are still building traditional houses down there 😂 must be about 20 years behind
Long may it continue! If everything goes Timber Frame I'm out of this game
Never see a traditional house getting built in Scotland now
@@charleswalls3696 they are becoming more widely used but hard to make money with the brickwork side. Not so bad with scaffolding but not big fan of brickwork
Kit houses load of crap to build nhbc have it ruined in scotland most Scottish bricklayers haven’t built traditional build houses so don’t plumb walls just keep the cavity 50mm
@@shanesloan3859 I would never buy a timber frame units personally, I see the advantage from a time and weather perspective but I think the quality of them is very low and poorly installed
'Pick and Dip' is the problem . 🏴
Pick n Dip is our saviour 😎
@@Tone_Team Not at all . The amount of compo going down the cavity is horrendous . I'm a 68 year old trowel and the standard of brickwork nowadays is abysmal . 🏴
Quite a blanket standard, surely you can’t talk for everyone in all areas ?
@@Tone_Team My advice to you is make momey while you can ..... Something big is coming . And try to build corners without profiles . I know most of todays profile monkeys can't , but do try . It majes you a much better trowel . And by the way , I still go 10 course with soliid 7n concrete blocks and Im nearly 69 years old . 👍💪🏴
You can get a 5-6 without having to do all that
I never said you couldn’t. Great if you can do it quicker than usual though 😉
Ffs this job is getting worse glad I’ve only got a couple of years left
Let’s just stay the same as we’ve always been then!
Surely the weight of muck is to heavy to blow
Those leaf blowers are pretty powerful, the dry mortar comes flying out the coring holes
Thats not one bit over the top 🥴
🤣
How is a leaf blower powerful enough to move gone of muck
They obviously blow it out straight after laying
Nah, when dry
Obviously I no when dry but surely is to much wait for it to blow
It fires it straight out 💨
Who paying for that if on price
Don’t you have to clean your cavities if you’re in price work?
Brick hammer at worst ,every over block out internal pair of gloves and a brush keep it simple ,as some sites moan about fuel on site, oh and a brush after.
Yes we have removed internal blocks before but that is much more time consuming than this. No issue with fuel here
Waste of time go old school and block the cavities with some wood. Grow some balls and tell the office boys to get lost.
😂😂😂 my balls are plenty big enough thanks.
This is by far the worst video I’ve ever seen , if the job is not hard enough , NHBC is going to be all over this , jeez give your head a wobble !
I need to give my head a wobble? So let me get this right, we have to clean the cavities, ties and trays and this particular gang decided to use a leaf blower because it’s FASTER, EASIER and QUICKER and I need to give my head a wobble. Please, for my own sanity, explain your logic. I don’t make the rules, I don’t tell anyone how to clean their cavities or what tools or products to buy, all they have to do, as an absolute minimum, is meet NHBC standards and specification of the client. Plenty of people on here are already using lead blowers so it’s hardly a new thing.
@@Tone_Team I’ve absolutely no need to justify my comment, 99.9% of brickies will agree with me this video is a step to far ,yes we have to adhere to NHBC standards but cleaning cavities to an extent you can eat your bait off them is to far !
@@bgraysafc I didn’t ask you to justify your comment, I asked you to explain your logic. The likes to dislike ratio on this video would disprove your point about 99% of Brickies agreeing with you. Looking at the comments plenty of Brickies are already using them. Who said that this method results in a better result than using a batten? I didn’t that’s for sure, I simply said it’s easier and quicker and therefore a no brainer. Your only comment is that’s is a step to far with no logic to back up why 🤯
