"It's like chess, except in real time, with unlimited moves, and both players keep making pieces and hiding them from their opponents." -WinterStarcraft Well said.
For those still deciding which race to choose, heres a break down: Terran's is probably the most tactical and versatile race. They have a versatile bio army as well as many tactical mech units that can be very powerful if used correctly. Zerg tends to expand quicker, and the idea is to develop a swarm (excuse the pun) of zerg units and cover the map in creep, and attack from every angle possible to overwhelm your opponents. Protoss are the high tech alien race. Their units tend to be more expensive, but they are generally much more powerful and cost efficient than zerg or terran units. If you like building a big powerful deathball to steam roll over your opponents, then look no further.
Zerg is less "swarm from all sides" and more "swarm much earlier than other races" Zerg can build and rebuild faster than other races. Hit your enemies as soon as you have a maxed army, rebuild, and ware down your enemies. Protoss is a very "all or nothing" race. It has a very powerful main army, capable of beating the other 2 in a straight up fight (unless you're at the grandmaster level). Their units are either gimmicky or powerful attackers.
This is not meant to be a step by step guide to grandmaster. It is meant to give you tools to start working your way forward, tools that I learned (painfully) over thousands of games and hours (up to grandmaster as all 3 races) and expedite that starting process that took me literally months if not years. I didn't cover EVERYTHING I would have liked to but I hope this helps some new (or old) players looking to get into the most competitive game in the world.
Do you think that there is going to be an huge increase in lower leagues like bronze silver and gold, or do you think that there will not be a big change in the low leagues.
I haven't played a PC game since 2004 and haven't played Starcraft since 2002. I just built a PC and downloaded Starcraft II and can't wait to play the story.
Once I was a bronze league hero for 2 years, and then I saw Winter 6 months ago, and now I'm masters(barely). And even though this was meant to be for new people, I still learned something from this, it's great that he cans till show people what they can do to be better ven if they already are good, or better than him.

Its an incredible thing to feel, the passion you have for sc2 oozing out of the screen. Every single time I don't feel like playing or about to rage quit I watch some BLH and get right back into a good mindset. Thanks Winter, GLHF
Dude honestly, i followed your advice not just from this video, but from a few other as well...and i can honestly say you're probably the best starcraft 2 online "teacher" ive ever seen. Just by following some of your simple and clearly explain steps ive had multiple winning streaks.
"protoss, terran, zerg, it doesn't matter the only race that has an advantage is koreans" hahahahaha I had to pause the video to laugh!!!! it's true, it's true... 🤣😂

Thanks for this guide. I hadn't played Starcraft since probably 1998 but picked it up when my son wanted it. Your advice about just getting better helped my frustration with my much slower reflexes. Also BGH was my favorite SC map.
Thanks a lot Winter for all the good work helping me improve in this game that I've been playing for 10 years now. I'm glad you're out there for the community chief ! Peace
God man the passion you have for this game is pouring out of you, I played this a very small amount over a year ago but couldn't get into it somehow, but heard about it going free to play so a couple of days ago I downloaded it & tried it again, loving it & really wanna dig deep into the game, I used to love old Command & Conquer games & Dark Colony years ago, watching this video & seeing the enthusiasm & passion you have for it made me excited to get into like no other game (except when I first discovered Dark Souls games maybe, but this is on par), awesome video.
I appreciate the time you spent making this video. I love the nuanced tips you offer that often gets brushed under the table by most beginner guides. Well done!

Just want to say YOU, Harstem and Pig got me into actually playing. I've always watched, but get too discouraged to play. This is such an amazing game. I always GLHF and GG, and almost never get it back. Seems like dickheads have taken over. But i'm doing well thanks to you guys. keep up the content!
I just started Starcraft 2 because my son wants to learn. I haven't played since Brood War. It's a faster pace. I liked your advice. To me one of the most important things I learned was the hotkeys. Once you learn them your play will improve a lot. So excited to see BGH is still around.
bro this is what we needed, i was about to log on youtube just to comment this, you are one of the worlds biggest persons when i t comes to SC2 and for new players like us this guide coming from you is a blessing ty bro, maybe once we'll meet in ladder, for now, i'll learn from the master ;)
This was useful to me, thank you. I also want to say that I appreciate that you made a deal out of always saying GG, regardless of how the game went. It's something I learned playing sports when I was 7 but also something that way too many people don't understand in the gaming world in general.
I played Zerg way back in SC1 (when I was like 6), and as SC2 is free and I’m getting into it now as a bit more of a real strategist, I’ve been again playing more Zerg than everything else, just because I remember loving Zerg back then. I kinda tried Protoss a little bit, but I like Zerg better. Now, I don’t really understand the MMR ratings in SC2, but ranked started me against 3500 MMR. My first game, I basically Zergling + Roach rushed him and completely wrecked him, shutting him down before he could even do anything. I had 100+ APM, he had like 25. After that was when I started being placed against 3500 MMR players and I haven’t won either of the 2 ranked games I’ve played since.
I'm not sure if it was this video or a different one, but in one of Winter's recent videos he mentioned a rule of thumb concerning how many games the average player needs to play per day in order to expect progress: 5 games per day per league, starting with Silver: 5 - silver 10 - gold 15 - platinum 20 - diamond 25 - master So for most people, 5 games per day can eventually get you to low gold. 10 per day can eventually get you low plat, etc. That seems like a very good thing to keep mentioning because it helps in goal setting - how many games per day are you willing to play? 5? Then your aim should be at low gold. 10? Low plat, etc. So if your goal is to be in master league, you should be expecting to spend about 4 hours per night playing StarCraft. So the next question is, how long should you expect to spend playing that many games per night in order to attain your goal? Here's my uninformed guess: 1 month - silver 3 months - gold 7 months - plat 13 months - diamond 21 months - master I was on a 15 person dev team for a while that had 4 people in it who played WoW for 5 to 7 hours a night. They just went home, ate dinner, and played WoW and went to bed. At like 11 or midnight or 1. That was their daily life. Not that they never got out or did anything different, but that was their typical day. And they seemed quite happy and even reasonably well balanced emotionally / socially. And they were even reasonably effective professionally. I read somewhere that time spent on hobbies is very highly correlated with happiness. __
That's not an example of the sunk cost fallacy but I get your point anyway. The sunk cost fallacy would be like you've been dating a girl for 15 years and on year 15 she goes batshit crazy, the correct move is to leave her but you stay because you've already invested 15 years - You're weighing the COST that has already been SUNK in making you decision and this my friend would be a fallacious argument. Gold level terran here, love your videos.
I'm playing through the campaign again after quitting out of frustration 3 year ago. I think the trick is to cycle through your tasks (workers, combat, etc.) instead of only doing one thing at once. I'm doing much better now since I realized I need to plan ahead of time by consistently building supply depots so I don't get supply blocked even if I don't need to train anyone at that moment. I feel much more confident than I did years ago.
Thanks, Winter. I have only played for two weeks yet, but your advice from another video got me instantly from finding the Medium AI challenging to comfortably beating Hard. The game is a lot of fun, I'm still practicing and videos like this are a big help.
I was probably silver two years back and then I took a huge break but, I just love the game so much, I wanna come back but life's just holding me back! 🙄😕😬
Finally got my pc put together to get back into gaming. Just downloaded Star Craft 2. Havent played since the days of old when I went to my best friends house and we play for hours. Thanks for info to get me back into the groove of things.
Nice vids winter. Agree! APM isn't important. Just focus on doing the right things, after enough of games, when actions become instinct and APM goes up. I started the game with 70 apm on average(a lot of ineffective actions) playing Terran. I got to around 90 when I learnt how to execute a specific build order; and then 100 when I don't get supply block; and 110 when I never stop the production while focusing on macro; now I'm average on 160 playing T and 220 Zerg since I can mix in some unit micro while macroing. It's just a process. Also, please don't let the ego take control of you. Complaining imba/op doesn't make you better, and people win because they deserve to win. Remember SC is a game where you'll be better than 80% of players just by knowing and effectively utilizing the game mechanism, you don't get to complain about the game and you opponents until you're in top 20%.
As someone who grew up with command and conquer and WC3 in my basement when i was just a child during summer breaks. I kind of fell out of the RTS scene but was always a big fan to play them. Unfortunately for me I was a Human player on WC3 so I accidentally gave myself a handicap to play against since the humans were... less than optimal. I've been thinking about getting back into RTS games (starcraft for the first time) and was leaning towards the zerg. I don't know why, I haven't looked into it at all yet but the concept really appealed to me.
I literally opened up the game for the first time, was very excited to play after watching hours upon hours of Winter and Lowko's channels. Got to 6:43 in the video and had to pause, because I was laughing too hard. Good start.
Recengly downloaded since it became free and have only played a few games, thanks for the advice this is super helpful and I'll be sure to check out a lot more of your content to see what I can learn. I think it's super awesome you made a video like this way too many channels centred around competative games don't make a legit 100% newbie video and they usually start with 'I'm gonna assume you know the basics' and proceed to talk about things I have no idea about.
Just got in to ST2, haven´t played it yet, and was lookig for a "noob" guid so to speak. Wow, man, you are realy good with the way you talk and adress your ideas to ppl. Played alot of of PC games before but im new to this stage. But you are blowing my mind out with that engagement and intresting facts your bringing! Kepp up the good work Subing to your chanTake care! Best of luck from Sweden, // Jimmy
Thank you so much for this! The free to play brought me back after 4 years. Need some build orders and basics for Zerg. Would love if you became the next Day[9] in the SCII community.
Haven't watched the video as a whole yet, but still do want to say thanks for putting a guide like this up. I've played AoE pretty much since I was 4 years old (Never was good at it, lol) and wanted to try something new and saw that STarcraft 2 was free to play. But playing one RTS game and then jumping straight into a different series can be a little overwhelming with how different the two games are from one another.
I don't even play games but somehow ended up here because of a Rogan podcast where he talks about Stcraft being on same level as chess but people don't acknowledge it. And you are giving this motivational speech which was pumping me up so I couldn't stop listening. God Bless the nerds! From one girl to y'all, nerdy guys are best ever. Hope you all find a gf/wife as wonderful, nice, and smart as you are ☺💜💛💚💙
This video and the Zerg guide got me through my placement matches and into silver 1. Only won one match since then, probably should be in bronze. Still, not bad for someone who had only ever played the campaigns. Definitely recommend it if you have not given it a go yet.
I just got this game today, free to play, thought I'd give it ago. I played the first one very briefly and didn't take to it, lasted all of 30 seconds and deleted it so didn't have too high hopes for the 2nd I have always been a fps gamer, and played games like Destiny, D2, Borderlands (all of em), Far Crys, Fallout 3 and 4, and more recently on XB1 I delved into a few free to play games that were available like Warframe, WoT, and so on, and so on... I then made the switch from console to PC recently, and I tried WoW - i didn't 'dislike' it but I didn't like it that much either, it just wasn't something that I took to very well and I think, based on all the hype Ive heard I had a LOT higher expectations for it, and then i hit lvl20, couldn't continue, and weighed up the pros and cons of paying game price and then monthly prices on top and felt like I wouldn't play or enjoy it enough to spend that money on it...……. anyway I digress... So I get the blizzard app and see the games, got this one today and man I am hooked Fair play I am really enjoying it, I've only done a few things so far like the main tutorials and started the campaign, i'm a few missions in, just getting a feel for it and the different things, messing around with the Terrans to start with, they seemed a good race to learn with - but considering this isn't a game genre I would play at all, I really took to it from the get-go. Anyway sorry for the essay, thanks for the tips on the video, great game, and for free (mostly) it is even better - i can see myself buying the rest of the campaign missions!!! and I don't know why but I seemed to pick up a red faction vibe of some of the characters and campaign scenes, and also a tiny borderlands feel from the mission characters (obviously not from the gameplay) My advice is - ITS FREE so just try it guys its a really cool game
I also enjoyed watching the tournaments too - Scarlet and Truth, I don't know if I will get that good but seeing as its free to play I can play multiplayer to hone my skills online :)
I played my first 5 matches yesterday. The first 2 were awful, the third I lagged out of, and the last two I won. Ive been playing SC since the original, but only played multiplayer a handful of times, and always got my ass handed to me. Ive been watching a lot of Lowko and Harstem vids lately, and decided to give it another shot
First time watching your video. Thanks for this and also I enjoyed your comments at the end about how its like chess, and very rewarding. I feel the same way!
I played my first game in starcraft 2 yesterday. I was playing with my friend 2v2 and it was some kind of rape. My friend asked me Will we win any game in closest future. At this moment we both start laughing
I would rather talk up competitive starcraft as the most intense or just strategic online battle you could ever have cause that will excite the true gamers out there. I think the way we talk about starcraft can turn a lot of people off to it. It's just like any other game: if you play the game for fun you'll put in the work yourself to get better when you decide you want to win more. I think goal setting and focusing on improving is not very important for new players to focus on cause they will do that naturally. Starcraft is just a game and I think the most important thing for a new players to do is have fun trying to outplay the opponents.
Internet needs "the meme guide for new players", with canon rushes, proxy hatch spine rushes, and something for terrans (don't play filthy terrans). I think Winter in that regard is the hero we need and deserve.

Here's the REAL breakdown.
Terran: Marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines marines

I'm not sure if it was this video or a different one, but in one of Winter's recent videos he mentioned a rule of thumb concerning how many games the average player needs to play per day in order to expect progress:
5 games per day per league, starting with Silver:
5 - silver
10 - gold
15 - platinum
20 - diamond
25 - master
So for most people, 5 games per day can eventually get you to low gold.
Here's my uninformed guess:
1 month - silver
3 months - gold
7 months - plat
13 months - diamond
21 months - master
I was on a 15 person dev team for a while that had 4 people in it who played WoW for 5 to 7 hours a night.

6:36 is the funniest thing i would never expect to get from this video. thank you.
Bronze league tournaments? Sign me the F up
I was probably silver two years back and then I took a huge break but, I just love the game so much, I wanna come back but life's just holding me back! 🙄😕😬
hope you get there, I'm in the same boat
i was in the same boat but once i came back i dont think ill ever leave......GG
If it's any consolation you can probably just macro out of silver
"every time you got supply blocked, hold your breath"
Instructions unclear, i'm now unconscious in the hospital
Been playing since day 1 and videos like this still help. Thanks winter.
The last minute gave me chills
Finally got my pc put together to get back into gaming. Just downloaded Star Craft 2. Havent played since the days of old when I went to my best friends house and we play for hours. Thanks for info to get me back into the groove of things.
Lost my copy of the game when moved years ago just downloaded again when found out it was free thanks for taking your time to update me.
SICK video winter. Awesome to see you helping the community!
I don't know why, I haven't looked into it at all yet but the concept really appealed to me.
exactly the type of guide i was looking for. always wanted to get into starcraft and i think this new patch is the time to do it. thanks man.
I literally opened up the game for the first time, was very excited to play after watching hours upon hours of Winter and Lowko's channels. Got to 6:43 in the video and had to pause, because I was laughing too hard. Good start.
Awesome. You the man, Winter. Welcome new players to the best game in life!
You're so encouraging without coddling. Good work on the videos
Thanks, man! I'm a seasoned sc/bw then sc2 player. I quit playing in 2013 and now trying to giving it a try again :) really helpful video to catch up!
"THEY WONT PUT YOU IN GRANDMASTER"
Unless you are a diamond 2 in NA server when there are player deficiencies :c
Great video. Haven't finished it yet, already subscribed.
Winter, your speech at the end was inspirational.
Eh!
Awesome video man! I play for 7 years now, sadly rarely, due to life, and i learned some new stuff here hehehe. Awesome!
Best of luck from Sweden,
// Jimmy
Hope you all find a gf/wife as wonderful, nice, and smart as you are ☺💜💛💚💙
I started playing zerg and never stopped it xD I played my first game with terran and protoss after I got zerg lvl 50 :p
This video and the Zerg guide got me through my placement matches and into silver 1. Only won one match since then, probably should be in bronze. Still, not bad for someone who had only ever played the campaigns. Definitely recommend it if you have not given it a go yet.
Damn Winter, you convinced me to start playing again... GL HF! B-)
I just got this game today, free to play, thought I'd give it ago. I played the first one very briefly and didn't take to it, lasted all of 30 seconds and deleted it so didn't have too high hopes for the 2nd
I have always been a fps gamer, and played games like Destiny, D2, Borderlands (all of em), Far Crys, Fallout 3 and 4, and more recently on XB1 I delved into a few free to play games that were available like Warframe, WoT, and so on, and so on...
So I get the blizzard app and see the games, got this one today and man I am hooked
Fair play I am really enjoying it, I've only done a few things so far like the main tutorials and started the campaign, i'm a few missions in, just getting a feel for it and the different things, messing around with the Terrans to start with, they seemed a good race to learn with - but considering this isn't a game genre I would play at all, I really took to it from the get-go.
Anyway sorry for the essay, thanks for the tips on the video, great game, and for free (mostly) it is even better - i can see myself buying the rest of the campaign missions!!! and I don't know why but I seemed to pick up a red faction vibe of some of the characters and campaign scenes, and also a tiny borderlands feel from the mission characters (obviously not from the gameplay)
My advice is - ITS FREE so just try it guys its a really cool game
I also enjoyed watching the tournaments too - Scarlet and Truth, I don't know if I will get that good but seeing as its free to play I can play multiplayer to hone my skills online :)
i had a great time with your video dude! regards from chile
That ending. It's nice to see your passion for the game. gl hf
Hey, thank you for the video, just got the game since now it's free but I'm enjoying it so far and you've definitively helped.
As a new player this video filled me with determination.
Same here dude.
Congrats winter for doing such a nice job, the guide is on point
First time watching your video. Thanks for this and also I enjoyed your comments at the end about how its like chess, and very rewarding. I feel the same way!
much respect for the honesty man , keep it up !
Thanks Winter. Got me hyped to go back to Starcraft. Goal#1: Do not get supply blocked Goal#2:keep money low :)
ARE U TELLING ME BGH IS STILL A PART OF THE GAME!! u sir just made my day.
I played my first game in starcraft 2 yesterday. I was playing with my friend 2v2 and it was some kind of rape. My friend asked me Will we win any game in closest future. At this moment we both start laughing
Your honesty convinced me to subscribe. Keep up the awesome work.
I'm digging the Seananners/Obama hybrid enunciation.
That was great. Motivational as fuck. Time to grab 4.0 by the horns. Thanks for keeping your fans and the avg player at heart.
There are two levels of players in SC2:
"very low," and "not so much"
Im exactly that new player. Been watching a couple of your games and your videos are real helpful :D
Internet needs "the meme guide for new players", with canon rushes, proxy hatch spine rushes, and something for terrans (don't play filthy terrans). I think Winter in that regard is the hero we need and deserve.
Mike Lezhnin ghost rush + nukes obviously
if you dont know what a dark templar is... yeah newbies are gonna rage a bit on their beginnings
I followed this guide and now i'm challenger in league thanks!:)
Steven6 wrong game dude, there's no "Challenger league" here.
You, Sir, I give my respect.
Everytime youre getting supplyblocked - hold your breath! I like that haha
"what's wrong with general chat?"
>Looks at general chat
"Ahh let's see what group I'm gonna join"
19:58 KEY! Thanks!
