    In a social media world a healthy dose of stoicism is more necessary than ever before. Especially in respect to the Petty Controversies point. People are actively becoming more functionally stupid as they get drawn more and more into meaningless bickering driven by the short-term memory of the modern news cycle.
    No-one has the time to have a meaningful discussion of important issues anymore. They are too distracted by the next meaningless reason to confront and 'win the internet'.

      The voice has a deep timbre that carries the wisdom. As the adage goes, "better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war".
      This sounds like a warrior, who has tempered his wisdom with many hardships and now tends to his thoughts like a garden.
      The others sounded like gardeners speaking about philosophy in comfort, as an indulgent practice of intellectual delight, but would crumble in actual conflict or challenge.

    Great video. On finances etc I keep it tight to my chest. Now about people that spend a lot of money on lavish vacations, what a wast of money. I know people over the years spend thousands of dollars on vacation year in and year out then some maybe once. Then they complain about something or they ridicule me about a purchase but when something breaks in their lives etc they don’t have the money or they are cheapskates but they will drop 10k on a vacation. I have a hard time swallowing the idea of spending 200.00 per night to sleep in a bed in a motel 120 miles from my house on the cost. Then add in the nightly rate and double occupancy. Just go to the coast for 3 days , meals , gas etc it’s a 1,000.00 dollar bill. A thousand dollar bill I can buy a lot of tools , etc and they will be with me for a long time. If I’m on the road I like it when it’s on someone else’s nickel 👍, that’s why I enjoyed OTR truck driving. Got to see a lot , get paid for it. So when people I know that start whining about something then I remember them bragging about that big vacation last year ; I don’t want to hear about there whatever. On the bright side of this , I was employed in the international underground mining business for 18 years. We had and they still do dig the raw materials out of the ground to make the jet airplanes, cruise ships , automobiles, etc so people can travel on lavish vacations, 👍Wining , job security for me.

      "Striving" might not be the best word to describe it. "Evolving" seems better, as you mention it in your video. I personally struggle with the importance of "having two ears and one mouth". Thinking that I am "somebody" I feel the need to teach ,more than be tought. When I think that I am "nobody" or "anybody", I keep my mouth restrained, I open my ears, I think, and evolve🙂@@stoicbond

    Two questions on these points: 1. Where is the line between confronting someone over their rude, inconsiderate behavior in a group setting where they are to be held accountable and unproductive gossip. Taking the example you used of an aunt who is habitually late: What if someone's repeated lateness wastes time for a group on a regular basis? What if the lateness involves preventing a group from even starting their planned activity because its nature where everyone must be present at beginning? Do small things not add up to large things given enough frequency?
    2. With past grievances, what if the person who caused the grievance in a real, measurable way fails to apologize for it or even repeats the grievance? At what point are they to be held accountable? Should one just silently, stoically put up with it indefinitely just for the sake of having any sort of relationship?
    I appreciate thoughtful and direct responses, and thanks for reading this.

      One wastes more time not expressing their concerns then waiting fo them to correct themselves.
      At most you can express the issue, ask for change, but nothing more.
      If it's a situation you cannot change, then accept it, and ignore it.
      However stoic teachings would suggest you distance yourself from said person.
      Perhaps attempt to understand why this person is always rude.

    • @stoicbond
      @stoicbond  7 місяців тому +2

      @7F0X7,
      Firstly, thank you for taking the time to comment and engage with the content of the video. Your questions bring up some truly nuanced aspects of Stoicism. When confronting someone over their behavior versus indulging in unproductive gossip, Stoicism advises us to center our reactions and behavior rather than attempting to control others. However, if an issue is affecting a group's productivity or activity, addressing it directly can be both stoic and constructive, as long as the intention is genuine problem-solving. It's crucial to address the issue without attacking the person.
      On the topic of past grievances, while Stoicism encourages us to move forward and focus on the present, it doesn't mean we should passively endure repeated harm. It's true that holding onto resentment primarily harms us, but setting boundaries is essential if someone continues to mistreat us without showing remorse. Being stoic is about discerning what's within our control and what's not, rather than enduring harm. How do you think one can balance the Stoic principle of accepting things outside of our control with the need to protect oneself from repeated harm?
      Again, I truly appreciate your thoughtful engagement on this topic and eagerly await your insights!

    • @7F0X7
      @7F0X7 7 місяців тому

      @@SirSithly Great responses, that's helpful. The only thing I'm not seeing the point in is every trying to discovery why someone is generally rude/inconsiderate when it is universal in their demonstrated character and not possibly just because of my own misperception of a given situation. Sure they may have been raised by narcissistic parents who always treated them and everyone that way, so they repeat the behavior. But when we're talking about adults past their early twenties, it's hard to see how the rudeness can be born out of anything other than self-cultivated narcissism. And more importantly, it's even harder to care what their reasons are when dealing with a grown adult. It seems like the only thing we can do is distance ourselves from others after you ask for change and it invariably does not come.

    • @7F0X7
      @7F0X7 7 місяців тому

      @@stoicbond Thanks for the detailed responses, this is great advice. The only solution I can think of to your question is to distance yourself from people who continuously mistreat you. However, it's very disheartening when nearly everyone flakes on you constantly while you don't break commitments outside of very rare and extreme circumstances. Flaking has become such a society epidemic that even when you calmly explain to them how harmful that is and hear them complain about how it's been done to them by others, they still do it to you repeatedly and then don't even bother to engage you later. And this is basically everyone I know and meet since I still try to meet new people and make friends. It's truly vexing and leads to little to no unnecessary communication with human beings at all.

    Avoiding petty controversy is important here and stood out the most to me.
    It requires a discerning heart. Our media has connected us all and so we are routinely seeing people at their best, but also their worst.
    People speak out about what comforts or satisfies them, and may be innocently uninformed or willfully ignorant. I have found myself holding my tongue when I could engage and argue a point of view or try to persuade them.
    All things have their time and place. Ask yourself if the office coffee machine or break room is the best place for engaging in contentious things. If someone comes to you earnestly and needs your insight, consider where best to create that time and space.
    Listen often and speak carefully. God bless.

    Imagine if many of the valuable insights within stoicism were methodically bestowed upon each new generation of men. Passed down as common knowledge, shared like a sort of origin story.
    What type of impact could something like that have on the mental, physical, and spiritual well being of mankind?

    For me, Ive been known to hold a resentment for a self destructive amount of time with the illusion of spite and inner anger being my sword and shield which couldn't be further from reality of endless suffering from bitterness and now, loneliness. Holding a grudge or resentment for too long is a death sentence. Maybe not physically but certainly spiritually

      @@stoicbond hey, honestly I've searched for stoic approach to love, sex and romantic relationship but found some films, that talked about some new age misticism and called it stoicism. I remember Marcus Aurelius quote, that sex is just "rubbing skin and secreting fluids". I believe stoic people are more approachable and resistant to harm but what else might they teach us in this matter?

    I agree with this great advice but I propose a legitimate exception to rule #1 would be when warning friends against exposing themselves to the "flaws" of actually malicious or defective people you have knowledge of and see in your friend's orbit, as an act of friendship

      Hey there @ryanv1145, thanks for watching the video and sharing your thoughts! It's always great to hear from fellow stoics. 🙏
      I completely understand your point about warning friends against harmful individuals in their lives. It's definitely a tricky situation to navigate, especially when it involves people we care about. 🤔
      But I'm curious, how do you approach this situation while still staying true to stoic principles? Do you have any specific techniques or strategies that you use? I'd love to hear your perspective on this. 🤔
      Thanks again for your comment and for being a part of this community! Keep practicing stoicism and let's continue to learn from each other. 💪

      @stoicbond I'm no expert regarding stoicism yet, which is why I find these videos so interesting. I assume from what I've seen so far though that truthfulness and staying true to principles of honesty would be an important aspect of stoicism? In that regard I would propose that discussing Only one's personal experience, in so much as it involves another, to a third party might not exceed the threshold of being "gossip" if the honest intention is protecting a friend from potential harm.
      This is not to include things one may have "heard about" or "would assume" about another person or their flaws, only ones own personal experience. Like if a business partner ripped you off or acted in bad faith on a professional level, then a friend of yours tells you that they are considering engaging in business venture with said person, relating your own experience might save your friend from being likewise victimized. Would this be in keeping with stoic ideals?

    I have hurt my ex lover by cheating on her a month ago, i am trying to make amends, she forgave, doesnt want back, i still beat myself up for what pain i have put her trough, now i am not trying to get her back just giving what i can and what is she willing to receive.

      Hey @ulffus7725, thanks for sharing your experience on the video! It takes a lot of courage to admit our mistakes and try to make amends. I can imagine how difficult it must be for you to see your ex lover in pain, even after she forgave you. Have you tried practicing forgiveness towards yourself? 🤔 It's important to learn from our mistakes, but also to let go of the guilt and move forward. Keep working on yourself and giving what you can, and who knows, maybe she'll come around. Stay strong! 💪
