Good point, she should've said between young people or anyone who's made it clear that you can address them with »du«.

Another thing. At 2:56 they explained Bitte as Please and then they used it as "You're welcome". So can it be used for both?

@@patriciat.8121 yes! With Bitte that means you're welcome, I think the proper translation should be like please or don't mention it

So does “du” mean they’re friends? I’m new and I want to learn German! Thanks

    • @ThomasNimmesgern
      @ThomasNimmesgern 5 років тому +7

@@catk8447 That's not necessarily the case. It's the other way around: If they're friends, they say "du".
There are situations in which you can use "du" even if you're not friends.
As a rule of thumb: the more informal the setting is, the more likely it is to use "du".
Another hint is the social status: if you and the other people around you are of the same social status, "du" can more easily be accepted (compared to a situation where other people are of a higher status than you).
However, that's somewhat tricky: If the situation is a formal setting, then "Sie" is often more appropriate (even if the persons are of the same status).
If you don't know anything about a person, you may use "Sie" to be safe.
An example: you want to buy a ticket for a bus ride, and so you ask the bus driver to sell you a ticket. That's a situation where I use "Sie" although it's not a highly formal setting.

"Danke, dass du heute Einkafen gegangen bist."
Maybe your phrase is more idiomatic in everday language.

    - Parents didn't allow saying "okay"
    - I say okay a lot.

"nehmen an" kind of closely translates to "take it" like " I take it that you have a lot to do today" which has the same connotations "to assume"

i suggest u google each phrase from this video.
    for example 3:20
turns out there are other version of this.
there are Bis nachher, Bis demnächst, & Bis dann.
all of this means the same thing but it depends on the context.

Alisa manages to make a super boring material fun with her body language, smile and laid-back approach. She makes you wanna come back to German(!) which is already a great success.

To assume translates to "ANnehmen" which isn't a proper example here unless you explain the separation or word particles: etwas annehmen - ich nehme an, er nimmt an, weggehen - ich gehe weg, ...
Same with "ANsehen" vs. "sehen" etc.
