I think on par 4s you should just try to get your drive in play. After that you can decide whether to play for birdie or play for par. basically separate the hole into two shots. throw your first shot then play from there as a par 3

Until you’re able to throw 400-450 and now have to decide what’s worth it.

I've likely been playing since before you were born (1993 PDGA #10450), and these tips are great...most of them many of us already know intuitively, but it's nice to see them bundled here so succinctly. New subscriber...

You would be correct! I bet I can learn a thing or two from you as well.

5 second rule has helped a lot working on focus and emotions during a round.
every shot deserves a reaction good or bad but you only get 5 seconds, learning to move on has been game changer.

I love this video. It hits so close to home. Two weeks ago, I had a tournament on a very long (for me) course, just over 7000 feet, and had a terrible first round. I have a bit more distance than most in MA3, so I was attacking. That was my plan, and I stuck with it through the round, but the consequence was a +11 score and frankly a pretty poor emotional state at the end of the round.
I had my lunch, a beer, and went back out with a "No Bogey" mentality and shot +1 with a birdie, 2 bogeys, and 15 pars.
Just that change in attitude and strategy put me from 7th place to a 3rd place tie. I try not to think about where I would have been had I went into the first round with a better strategy (2nd place in MA2, but who's counting).
Robbie C has a great video on Attack Hole Strategy that's worth a look.

    Top 10 Big Mistakes
Doing form analysis in the middle of a round (Teepad or Putting)
Trying to play outside of your ability
Playing everything for birdie (playing most of them for par in a tournament)
Not sticking to your gameplan (local course/see someone else throw a better shot/do what works for you)
Warming up your putts before a round from way too far away (practice 15ft get confident)
Waiting way too long before you throw (especially on easy shots)
Losing concentration before you’re going to throw a shot (you screwed up a shot, take a minute re-focus)
Going into a hole/round/tournament with the wrong(bad) attitude
Going for “hero” shots (trying to make up for mistakes earlier in the round)
Dwelling on bad shots (they screw you up for a few holes if not longer)
    Love the content man! Subscribed!

I played my first PDGA sanctioned event at MA3, or it was called recreational then. Holy F did I suck. Played the course blind. It was a sh*t show… but I never gave up. Told myself this round isn’t changing my mind about disc golf. I think I scored like +30 for the two round tournament 😅
A year later and several months of practice I beat my score and played in MPO. Was +1, and them -10 the next tournament. And turned pro in the last tournament I cashed in. You really gotta teach yourself a strong mindset.
IMO if you love disc golf, make it fun for yourself but at the same time focus.

I spend some time working on the high soft floater putt for putts like you’re hero shot example. Can still make a run on it but less risk of a long come backer. Harder to make but less risk. But a time and place for everything. A death putt with a big drop off is still a death putt.

It seems like one of the underlying messages is to be secure in your training/practice and if you aren't, make notes on what you'd like to improve outside of the round that you're playing rather than experimenting on the spot

As a professionally mediocre disc yeeter myself.. i loved all of this..
I would make one suggestion... When putting (and this made a huge improvement to my hit/miss inconsistencies) ... the one thing to concentrate on... the final position of your throwing hand.
I hear people say "Shake hands with the basket" but that statement has a HUGE flaw... it relies on your release angle/style etc to be perfect for you... if you finish with a handshake position... BUT that final position is NOT the same per person (Or even per putter).
I now have 4 putters (and usually carry only 2.. I'm no expert, why carry 20+ diks and know none of them.. I carry 12 and know them on a lot of different angles)...
Usually the 2 putters I use are very different in shape/glide/plastic... i.e an RPM Plasma Proxy and an RPM strata Ruru... the different depths of the putter mean my hand MUST be in a different position at release otherwise the Ruru will Hyzer when I throw my usual (flat) putt.
SO... I have a couple of swings at the basket to 'feel' the weight of the disc. and make sure my release point is at an attitude that (for me) comes out flat (ok I Hyzer a lot off to the left.. but this is fixing that)... and I concentrate on the end position of my hand, extended to the basket.. on the right angle... set that position of my hand... swing those couple of strokes into that position... and all while focusing at where I want that disc to hit... usually just to the right face of the pole. (some like a chain link.. sometimes that's me too...
(And god help me if I try and throw it to the basket rather than pass it there.. as soon as I think 'Throw' I add power and spin.. and hyzer that sucker round the back and away the same or more from the pin.. may as well have laid up instead coz that birdie just became a bogey with a harder putt for par.
    A possible addition...
Don't say Par, Birdie, Bogey... use the strokes.. this way you can also reflect on each shot in your head when recounting.. .but most importantly....
on an unfamiliar course... keeping to a stroke count makes sure you score the CORRECT amount of strokes... (Be wary of thinking you got "PAR" and noting down 3 when maybe it was a par 4).
I'm really ADD (undiagnosed)... I did my 1st tournament last week and I'm fairly sure I did an extra mile just hiking back to pick up a disc,, or my phone.. or a drink can (in fact I can safely say I didn't leave my cart or mini behind.. that's about it)... so scoring was a panic trigger for me..

My very first tournament I signed up for MA2 (I just followed the PDGA site guidelines), turns out I'm not actually that good, the guy who one MA2 was one stroke behind the guy who won MA1. I came in 2nd to last place only beating my friend who was also in his first tourney and been playing less time than I have. My 2nd tourney I did MA3, was also 2nd to last in that one but 1st round got real behind and 2nd round just aimed for par and actually parred the course and got over an 800 rating for the first time. I was still a little optimistic with the MA3 so my next tourney is MA4 and I'm going in with a better putt and hopefully more accurate competition!

One problem with tourneys are the sandbaggers. Divisions have recommended ratings but I feel there need to be more enforcement on ratings. I have seen guys playing MA4 that need to be in MA2.

    • @jjhill001
      @jjhill001 9 місяців тому

@@Wolf_man_has_nards my thought was that it was a pretty hard course so if you were on the bubble of a division you could have a real good day and the whole of the division above you could have a bunch of trouble for whatever reason and it happens that way. At least thats what I'm telling myself lol

Its not a popular take, but mcbeth said it once and I agree most disc golfers should focus on gaining raw power and distance before anything else in the game.. if you can’t reach the long par 3s (370-440) then you’re never giving yourself a chance and playing for par is only fun for so long.

I am 100% not laying up on that putt unless I’m up 2 on hole 17. I’m also not laser putting. I’m floating something in, give it a chance, and trying best to manage land angle but moreso trusting that I can make my come backer.

We know we should lay up/pitch out but the times we made a hero shot for bird or par, out weighs the right decision. That’s the fun part about disc golf. Can you be consistent enough to play at your best? Even when we have the best round of our life, I’m sure we still missed a bird or two that we got the other day 😅

The thing about golf/disc golf is your best rounds are never going to be perfect. Even the classic mcbeth perfect round had 1 par and 1 eagle. Could have made that birdie and shot -19!

Tip 9 about laying up. Honestly, that's the primary place I gain strokes on other players. It's probably a fault that I usually keep it way too safe all the time but it's saved my butt a lot. Sometimes just having that mindset of "Ya, I know I'm just going to lay this up." when I'm on the tee actually ends with me parking it for an easy birdie
