5:21 and here is where the new yellow contrast paints come in.. have you tried them yet Michael? They are absolutely amazing. Never before was there as you said a way to get a solid yellow over a dark undercoat.. this works like a dream, and the finish is extremely smooth and matt!
The colour of the primer makes a massive difference, I really struggled to paint yellow over black primer. Instead wraithbone primer works better with yellow armour. The temperature of the primer can makes a difference, if it’s too cold or too windy or humid outside, then the primer can end up being to blotchy or grainy. A friend said you should stick the primer can up your jumper for 10 to 15 minutes so your bodyheat warms the can up. I take it a bit further my relaxing under a duvet with the primer can to warm the can up while I watch a few UA-cam vids. Another way of doing zenithal highlighting is to use a rattle can of black primer then dry brush a small amount of white or grey paint over the raised areas of the model.
If you look after your models you don’t need to use much. It’s not worth the risk of clogging up details. A very very light spray is enough. Also zenithal with spray cans is more than likely going to clog up details especially for someone inexperienced with spray cans
I've gone through at least 4 of your videos so far and I'm excited to try all the techniques I've seen so far to my models!! 10/10 would recommend haha
brilliant, I'm glad I can help in some way to help you get better at painting. just make sure to take your time learning the process and building that confidence
I almost exclusively use Vallejo Black airbrush primer with no zenithal. The only time I use a zenithal is on a detailed mini where the detail can get lost in a sea of black. However if I’m going for a retro eavy metal paint job then it’s a very light grey almost white primer. I feel this really makes the colours a lot more vibrant.
Thank you, I've worked hard to make sure my tutorials are full of as much information as I can give, including visually as I understand people take in information in all different kins of ways

I undercoat my Cadians with Zandri Dust Spray, after spraying I use Zandri Dust from the pot and go with one thin coat over the uniform for a smooth finished.
That’s a great undercoat colour to use for Cadians and I used it in my tutorial, I did run out of it though 🤦🏼♂️ but I agree with your choice and approach to painting the uniform 😃

Awesome vid. I ran into some drama recently attempting Zenithal - because I was scared to cover the model too much I wasn't holding the nozzle down firmly enough so there's load of sputtery dots all over them now. Having to correct with a brush before I add the contrast paint
I was going to do a video dedicated to it, but I don’t really use it very often and there’s better people out there to learn about it from. But I’m glad I included something about it, just so people know it exists 👍🏻
Wraithbone spray is the off white colour. I very rarely find myself using black now. I’m just a big fan of bright colours I recon. Thanks for the comment 😁
What do you think about cheaper aftermarket sprays or sprays from normal paint shops, are they acryl or oil based, there's is not much info on cans. In most cases they are universal for wood metal and plasti materials and they cover very nice but I'm not sure about paint sticking to them.
If you're going to look into different sprays, you'll want to make sure they are either acrylic or they will say primer on them, other wise you'll find they're lacquers. I know people use Halfords sprays
I had no issue with using sprays in the winter, but it just got a lot drier and hotter here in Japan and I did some of the new tyranids from the ultimate set... I wish I had not. The models themselves have too many small details and the spray clogs it even if you are careful. For that range of models, I will not use a citadel spray again for the base. A very light primer from a different company may be fine. Citadel base spray... no don't use it in temperatures above 26 degrees. It just dries too fast and leaves terrible detail damage.
Glad you liked the video. I’m probably not gonna do a video on stripping as I don’t really do it. I’m sure there’s lots of articles and videos already that show you the best way of stripping models
Hey 👋 just found your channel, good job dude , very helpful stuff and love the layout of your videos with the little paint pots on the side showing what colours etc , keep up the great work
If you're in a position where you can't spray for whatever reason, I have long felt Stynylrez primer from Badger is the best brush-on primer - at least black and grey. White still needs to be airbrushed for effectiveness. The other two however, go on incredibly well with a brush and harden to a perfect surface.
its worth tryng out :) the white and black sprays are pretty easy to use in my experiance. pratice on something your not fussed about first :D good luck
all the citadel sprays can be used as a primer. they're just different colours. I probably use the different colours more than the basic colours and I've never had a problem with spraying them straight onto plastic
Hello There! Following up from the Tau commander video i checked out this one and following step by step i've managed to get the result that you have at 3:50, the problem is that my primer partly came off from a slight touch which i presume is because the paint itself is faulty since i've painted at 20 C after 3 minutes of shaking and 1 hour of drying. Also i've wanted to ask did you sand the white miniature between 3:50 and 4:40 or something? It looks a lot better then after priming.
Im new in the hobby and having a hard time getting a clear answer to whether a "primer" and an "undercoat" is the same? - Im going to paint orks and want to use wraithbone, but it is labled as "contrast undercoat". Do i need to use something labled as "primer" under it? Or is it the same thing? (I have gone through countless reddit threads and keep getting mixed answers)
An undercoat and primer both do exactly the same thing. People just like to get high and mighty about things. Wraithbone is a great undercoat to use. I use it myself 👍🏻
Maybe a stupid question, but I just started today. When I use the Citadel Macragge Blue Spray as my first coat on the minifigure, do I still need to add blue paint via a brush? The blue just looks a lot darker than on most videos. (Maybe it is the bright LED lights in videos). Or can I just use the spray as a "basic" uniform color and get straight to add details with black etc.?
I would always do a base colour as well over any undercoat spray you use. the pot colours don't match the sprays, watch an of my more recent videos on painting ultramarines, the terminator one is my favourite
....and no matter how bad one fails at painting, he can always spray it over with chaos black and call them Black Templars, Ulthwe, Black Legion,..... and wrap it up Nice video :) personaly i stick with grey seer. Thanks 😃 I’m in the habit of using wraithbone. I like that creamy off white colour. I recon people like certain colours because they prefer how the different paints look on it
I’m having trouble applying my retributor armor, it either doesn’t come out in the gold that I want, but rather some times a sandy looking color, I live in Florida so the temperature barely goes down below 80
if your making sure its shaken and follow other advise from the video then its likely the florida temperature. maybe teres a cooler time of the day? the issue with high temperture is the paint dries and evaperates more quickly when it leaves the can so you'll find your just getting dry paint on your miniature. try spraying a little closer to your miniature and use less frequant bursts as you spray
Missed opportunity to say spray from about the length of the ruler away 🙃 I use a lot of Gold Retributor Armour spray, but that's for my Thousand Sons trim
What primer would you recommend for Goff Orkz? I've seen you use a variety of primers for Orkz and I'm trying to narrow my decision and not overthink it too much. New to painting in general so I'm trying to do it right
it's really a personal choice on what you prefer working over. honestly I tend to use what I have at the time. so I have Orks undercoated leadbelcher, wraithbone, grey seer etc etc. I do tend to stay away from chaos black though, I like a good midtone or light colour. I would use chaos black for vehicles and things like mega knobs if they have a lot of black armour.
@@TableTopReadyUA-cam I have been keeping up with all of them. Not done any hobbying for ages as been really struggling with mental health issues. Hoping to sell my stuff I’m not going to work on and get some chaos knights with the proceeds. I think fewer models that are more ‘special’ will be less daunting that the Guard and Ork kits I’ve got currently!
As i have stated with numerous tutorals like this. Can you do a version for priming multiple units at the same time? Cause hrde armies cant afford to go one by one xD
Just get something bigger to stick more things to? The way to spray them is the same, your just spraying more miniatures. If you really doing a lot and want to do them quickly then don’t build them in sub assemblies. But everything I do is the same when I spray a larger amount of minutes as well.
If you're doing large numbers of minis, best to assemble them all in full and blu-tack them onto 1 side of a rule/long stick (you could literally do 4-8 in a row) and spray them all together. Might need to separate them and finish off spraying each of them into the more concealed sides/underparts, but you could easily spray a large unit of models in the space of an afternoon.
I do think primer can habe a pretty big difference. Espically with grey primers, because a lot of models (not just warhammer) are ALSO grey and so become an absolute PAAAAIN to see what HAS and HASNT been sprayed

I use Pebeo Black or Vallejo Grey but neither stick to my models that well. I’ve tried washing with soap and water and also with alcohol but the results have not been great, though acceptable.
I'm gonna assume these have been mixed with thinners or are they spray based? if you are mixing them with thinners, sometimes the thinner can effect how that primer performs, especially if its a different brand. I know Vallejo doesn't work very well with Mr Hobby for example. the Vallejo thinners are pretty universal though. I know AMMO do airbrush ready primer. if they are sprays then I'm not sure why that is
Can you please do a tutorial on how people get those pinky/purple/red chaos that I see in all the battle reports, it's so nice but mine always just look like power rangers...

One thing that I never see talked about is those hard to reach recesses/places. I always spend an hr or so on a unit afterwards getting those places by hand. Otherwise if I try to do it using the spray can it goes on too heavy and ruins the model. Does anyone else have this problem?
honestly, I never manage to get every nook and cranny, but I find the over spray tends to be good enough and you're able to paint on on it regardless :D
@@TableTopReadyUA-cam thanks, sounds like I’m spraying the right amount then. I usually have this issue more when my base coat is the same colour as my primer so need it all fully covered. I find a wash or contrast though tends to cover any small areas I’ve missed. Because of this sometimes I do feel I waste a bit of time getting it fully covered before my wash/contrast so still experimenting with what’s best. The one thing I really want to avoid though is over spraying and losing detail. I tend to struggle with this a bit when spraying. Probably wouldn’t be such an issue with an airbrush. Great video!
Anyone else having a hard time getting leadbelcher to cover properly? Tried priming my dreadnought and all i get are speckles of metal and clogged details. I did prime it with mechanicum grey a month or so ago and decided i didnt want to try painting all the metal with a brush. Not sure if its me or if leadbelcher being a metallic paint makes it more finicky.
The leadbelcher should behave the same as other sprays. If your finding it building up then try moving the can more as you spray in short bursts. Make sure it’s really well shaken. Less is more with leadbelcher as well.
this could be for a lot of reasons, its just gonna be a bit of trial and error. a lot of the time this is because the paint is drying too fast before it hits the miniatures. make sure its shaken and maybe spray a bit closer to the miniatures.I can only show you best practice
I prime my miniatures… I paint them. The paint just seems to scratch off so easy with my fingernail. Whereas, I’ve bought miniatures already painted off eBay, and they don’t look varnished, but you’d have to practically take some vapour to those suckers to get the paint off. I don’t understand where I’m going wrong ?
I’d definitely use rattle can primer, the water-based ones aren’t as good imo. Once the mini’s finished I sometimes varnish them in water-based Vallejo gloss and then go over them with Vallejo clear varnish. If they’re going to be used a lot in games, this really stops the paint coming off. The gloss varnish is tough stuff!
@@TableTopReadyUA-cam I prefer it to white, was surprised at how it can still lay down a zenythal but the highlights are not as stark when you start layering
Citadel spray is NOT primer, it may contain some primer like a house paint does, but it is not a proper primer. Actual primer serves a real purpose. Also Priming and Undercoating are two different steps.

@@TableTopReadyUA-cam Thank you kind sir, I greatly appreciate you and your videos
I did that and it came out slightly gritty.
this could be for a lot of reasons, its just gonna be a bit of trial and error. a lot of the time this is because the paint is drying too fast before it hits the miniatures. make sure its shaken and maybe spray a bit closer to the miniatures.I can only show you best practice
🔥🔥🔥
Dam yu are so good at painting can y please do a runtherd and gretchin painting tutorial plzzz
You would be a god
I’ll add it to the list
@@TableTopReadyUA-cam OMG thxxxx so much
I prime my miniatures… I paint them. The paint just seems to scratch off so easy with my fingernail.
Whereas, I’ve bought miniatures already painted off eBay, and they don’t look varnished, but you’d have to practically take some vapour to those suckers to get the paint off.
I don’t understand where I’m going wrong ?
paint cures over time, I would just avoid scratching it with your finger nail :P
@@TableTopReadyUA-cam
lol… didn’t think of that…
yeah it dries fast enough to work with but it will need to continue to dry over a longer period of time ha
Grey or black or both
I've not really tried grey, but I may give it a go now I have some
@@TableTopReadyUA-cam I prefer it to white, was surprised at how it can still lay down a zenythal but the highlights are not as stark when you start layering
This may mark me a heretic, but has anyone had success with non-Citadel spray cans?
Yeah, there’s lots of different options out there. Just make sure to do some research before you dive in to the unknown
Maxi colour - Robert Dyas. £5!
Citadel spray is NOT primer, it may contain some primer like a house paint does, but it is not a proper primer. Actual primer serves a real purpose. Also Priming and Undercoating are two different steps.
This is worth knowing 👍🏻
Dont use spray cans, safe money for an airbrush.
That is an option 👍🏻
...there are better and cheaper options than citadel rattle cans. Even Forge World don't use em on resin.
There are lots and lots. It’s all about doing a little research and finding one that you like to use
If you’re using a $20 can of spray paint…the answer is ‘no’
Nah. We is too stupid
That’s why I made this video 😉
4:04 I can feel the touch of this model and I don't like it
it was pretty much just powder when you touched it
