My dog is half cane and she acts exactly this way, loves being on the couch but when she goes outside she’s a different dog. We thought she was climbing the fence, but then I caught her in the act, she literally cleared the fence 😅

Thank you , thank you for discussing toys . As a vet tech I have assisted many surgeries where we have pulled out insane items. And this is true of any size dog and cats too. Hair scrunchies , kid's erasers , pieces of plastic, balls that were small enough the dog could swallow. Keep up the information. Thank you again

My corso could leave any time she wants. The yard is fenced. She doesn't leave because of her guarding instinct. She knows that the yard is unprotected if she can't see it. When walking in the woods off leash, she needs to see me to protect me, so she never gets far.
We got her at 11 weeks old, and within the first week in our house, she started display fearless aggression toward unknown noises or people in the house.
    A truly incredible animal.

I live in the Northwest Territories, and I am able to walk into the woods from my home.
This winter, though, we are having an increased amount of wolves and wolverines in town. She is a big, strong dog, but natures assassins are on a more serious level.

A friend of mine had one. His swallowed an entire 14" long rope bone chew toy. It got stuck in his intestines and blocked it entirely. He was a huge muscular dog, looked like a pumped up body builder. By the time they figured out why the dog wasn't eating and started puking up his food, he had lost easily 20 pounds of muscle. He never gained it all back. He was intimidating to say the least, unless he knew you then he was a big baby. Although he would make it clear you were not to enter the house when his owner wasn't there. Great dog. He was awesome.

I keep coming across people who don't see the point in crate training a dog and say that "you shouldn't have a dog if you're going to stick it in a crate" and even "they don't belong in cages". And yet they still try to justify not using a crate when you mention the damage that even a well trained dog can do, no matter how much stimulation they're getting or the number of toys whenever they're left unsupervised.

I don't crate my dog. She's never done damage in my house ever besides the couple of times a year she poops and/or pees but otherwise, she's great. With that said, I adopted her at 2 yrs old so maybe she was crate trained by her previous owner which is why she does so well now? She's an American Pit.

I made the mistake of not crate training my first two aussies. Luckily they live at my barn and love it. When I got my third I decided to crate train her and it has made a very big difference. I never worry about her destroying anything or making a mess, or even getting out of my property when I’m not home. She still gets plenty of energy out and it’s taught her how to have self restrain. I let her out during the day, but leave her crate open so she can enter it. She spends about have of everyday in there napping or hanging out. I believe all dogs should be crate trained (even if they don’t regularly spend time in one) and be able to be touched EVERY where on their body. You never no where you can be put in a situation where you need to keep them still or you need to carry them somewhere like the vet.

@@puerta1022 she was probably past her phase of chewing and being destructive at 2 years old, but every breed is different and so is each individual dog. I literally can't leave my dog out whenever I'm not home because she is destructive out of boredom. Because she's a border collie mix, the collie side of her is the destructive side as those dogs like to chew and dig when they're bored.
Whenever I'm at home, she's quite well behaved.

    • @SM-mm9lo

A crate is necessary IMO, not as a prison but as a dogs own safe space when you need them to settle, or if they've come in from exercise muddy to dry off before brushing, you have tradespeople in, or guests who don't like dogs.
My dog loves his crate, it's always been a positive place for him.
Never ever should they be used as a main stay.

This is so true! We train twice a day at meal time. Even if it’s 10 minutes. We throw his ball, play tug, and go for walks almost daily. He’s great inside, but if he’s not allowed to go outside and do what he loves, his energy gets all pent up!!!! They need fun time as we call it. And he actually loves using his brian and training. We do free shaping training as well to allow his to use his nose and instincts. You have to keep them occupied. I wouldn’t recommend for most people. It’s a lot of work.

I’ve always had large dogs (Labs) growing up. My parents said that you always want to buy a toy they can’t rip up or bite through. We mostly used kongs for play time with them. I still use them with my GSDs as a grown up! I definitely recommend them for large breeds like labs, German Shepherds, bully breeds etc. they are long lasting and it’s nearly impossible for dogs to ingest anything from it. Just make sure you keep them clean and out of the elements to avoid dry rot ❤

If you're going to crate train your pup you should go the extra step for THEIR sake and get them an enclosed kennel like a RuffLand or something similar, wire crates are horrible, I've seen multiple dogs hate their crate because they feel so exposed I mean it's just wire, get them a fully enclosed comfortable kennel and suddenly that same dog loves their crate. 🤷🏽‍♂️

The entire time I would be standing there the "Rot" would continue to Creep toward the door with a "Deep- Throat Growl" going on. No matter how many times He would be told to "Get Back"; He would move back into the room and then start the routine again. I personally did not feel the dog was Trustworthy (especially when the Wife was at the screen door). Is this common with Rottweilers, or just that dog? BTW during this same time, my Family owned three (3) Protective Dobermans (1- male & 2- females (Mom & pup) and I had a long History with Dobermans AND Never had a problem with Trust. Yes! You’re right about the walls. I put my dog in the bedroom when we had someone here to do work. I heard her barking like a mad dog but ignored her for maybe 10 minutes. When I went to let her out there was a big hole in the wall beside to door. 10 minutes more and she’d have been out. She was about 9 months old

I am curious as to your opinion on crate training being so important or just the use of . I am not claiming to be a pro or what not but I will say I have never used a crate or been put in the scenario we're I thought it was so important . This goes out to anyone who may see this also doesn't just have to be original poster.

If your dog has to stay at the vets, where will they be? A crate. If they try to injure themself in panic, they'll be given sedatives.
Your dog breaks their leg, crate rest is often a treatment.
Back strain or injury, can require more than 2 weeks of crate rest.
Car accident, a crate keeps the dog from going through the windshield.
Traveling? Many dog friendly hotels require crates.
Dog sports? Some require dogs to be crated unless it's their turn.
Evacuation? Many shelters require dogs to be crated and if they are disruptive, you get kicked out.

An 80 lb lap dog is how I would describe my buddy's girl Lexa! If he let you in and sat you down in the kitchen, you were immediately presented with the slimiest most (ironically) unharmed except for the slobber sponge effect stuffed bear to throw. And after supper, be prepared for 80 lbs of fawn/gold fur laying on your feet, lol!
