    By the way Geoff. I'd personally like to thank you for having such a wonderful and informative channel. I went from getting dropped every 2nd race in C grade 2 years ago to being consistently in the top 5 in B grade. I constantly have your advice running thru my head during a race. I worked as a timer on multiple cycling races. Those lines are related to the timming device used by organizers. If the chip is located at the fork the second line is the finish line because when the wheel is on that line the chip is nearly at the center of those lines and that is the place where the signal from the chip is greater to the device. On some grand tours the chip is located back on the bike and the finish line is forther on the road. Here we see the importance of using a photofinish camera on the line

    • @Gabrielle4870
      @Gabrielle4870 3 роки тому

      What's wrong with judges and an phone with slowmotion? All of this would have awarded Logan the win. Timing systems should be for backup, not the other way around.

    This should be called, "The difference between racing and riding" If you want to see what riding looks like, look at the first race. To go from that, accelerating up on people's wheels and having to brake, just shedding watts for no damn reason, I mean seriously!!! To this? I didn't see you hit your brakes once, no silly chasing, that position and line in the last corner - beautiful... That's what a racer looks like.

  • @mickwilson2170
    @mickwilson2170 3 роки тому +3

    Logan I remember(and not to long ago) I'd either win or get dropped with no inbetween...none... due to having a big sprint(past 100m sprinter with now rubbish knees) but no endurance.... even short crit endurance.
    It takes a couple of years to build your base.... then you end up too fast for your grade, they make you move up and then you struggle all over again.... yay cycling. Good luck champ!

    I finished a race once where the placements were based on timing chips. I wound up 9th in the results on the day, which I was okay with at the time. A day later when someone published photos including the finish. Based on the photo, I should have been 6th! Neither of those are brag-worthy placements, but since I was racing up a category, I really would have liked 6th on my record rather than 9th lol.
    I think officials need to review footage more often rather than rely on data from timing chips exclusively.

    Good sign that Logan is thinking about things like following the yellow jersey.
    You may want to give some thought to pedaling through the corners when you're on the outside, as it tends to be off-camber and easy to dig your pedal unless you have high bb and short cranks.

    One thing I only noticed the second time through this video is how tall Logan got in his sprint. He's already putting up really good power numbers from what little I know, but I think there's a few km/h more in it if he just crouched down lower over his handlebars, a bit like Cavendish (who can almost touch his bike computer with his chin it seems :D). Nitpicky, I know, and I'm sure I wouldn't even have been in this position in the first place, so don't take it negatively please :D

    One last thing I noticed - as Logan was sprinting he came out away from the left-hand gutter/curb in a R-L crosswind, should he have stuck to the curb to keep anyone from coming up in the sheltered side? All around impressive performance, excellent race tactics by Logan, and a well-deserved win (even if it came with a 2nd place finish).

    I wish we'd had your excellent videos 30 years ago when I was actively racing, they would have certainly shortened my learning curve.
    I dug up my old notebook from1991, in it I had a page where I boiled my racing knowledge down to 10 principles.
    These aren't my creation, they include material from Walden School of Cycling, contributions of cycling friends, and lessons learned from leaving skin on pavement. (Items in parentheses to clarify my notes for UA-cam)
    Other than leaving out "don't chase your team mate", it seems these notes pretty much paraphrase what you are teaching today:
    1) Be clipped in and rolling when the whistle blows (to start the race; race is not won in first corner, but can certainly be lost there)
    2) Shred the Freds (Help make race hard first few laps to get rid of squirrely riders and those who will allow gaps to develop later in race. Necessary in an era when fields of 75-150 riders was not uncommon in a Cat IV or Cat III race)
    3) Ride the Tide (take advantage of ebbs and flow in race to move up)
    4) If you are not moving up, you are moving back
    5) Never accelerate in undisturbed air
    6) Guard your front wheel
    7) If someone yells “inside” entering a turn, shut the door
    8) If there is a crash, look at the road, not the downed riders-your bike will follow your eye. If hitting a downed rider is unavoidable, aim for the neck-that’s the lowest point. (Corollary principle-cover your head and neck if you crash)
    9) Sprinting requires guts, not brains
    10) Positioning for the sprint requires brains

      @@larsbeta well there are according to usac. You guys must be talking about how you can upgrade voluntarily though?

    The sensors on the bike have to pass between those two lines on the ground to register and blue bike was an absolute rocket in the last 3 seconds with that last effort. I'd like to see the "official footage" I think it would have been a cock hair in either riders favor. Obviously Logan has the intuition to take the right lines while racing and I can't wait for the strength and the endurance to catch up. Shallow rims and an aluminum bike too... He's on the up and up.

    It depends. If the finish line is the second line Logan probably lost. @12:52 would have been nice to let the video play instead of stopping when crossing the 2 lines.

      If you still frame it on the second line it's still my wheel ahead. That dude was flying up behind me for sure though.

    I think in these situations the win should be awarded to the rider who started in front unless there is clear evidence they were overtaken
