Thanks so much for your perspective. I’m considering a job as an MHT and found your video really helpful. You seem like an amazing person. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors!
This video was really encouraging for me, currently a freshman in college getting my AA in Psych and I really was trying to put a label of some sort on a career for me. It’s helpful to see someone explain their experience because it aligns with what Im trying to figure out for myself, thank you so much for this video :)
This was helpful for me; I'm happy to see someone so young in the field because I'm 19 going on 20 myself, and I was a bit worried that maybe my age range wouldn't be as acceptable for being a psych tech, even though the places around here only require a high school diploma / GED. I'm in college with my concentration as psychology, as stated on my resume. Full time at the hospital I'd go to would be about 3 days a week because shifts are all 12 hours, so I'm thinking I could handle my classes with it, but I'm a little bit nervous. I know I just need to take that jump, but at the same time, I worry that maybe I'll just be putting extra stress on myself too early for no reason when I could take advantage of my time now; however, I feel like I'm wasting time working in the food industry. I want to work in my field. Anyway, thanks for some insight. I really appreciate this video.
I just finished my associates degree with an emphasis on psych! I just got hired as a MHT. I can relate to a lot of what you said. I have been excited but nervous about starting my new job as a MHT. Your video helped me gain insight and I am so excited to start this journey. Thank you for being honest about the job. I appreciate that you shared both the highs and lows. Your video helped me realize I’m doing the right thing.
Wonderful video Oliver!! I relate to you a lot with interests and past struggles. It’s great to hear you mention the importance of taking care of yourself and going to therapy. Thank you so much!
Hi Oli, I am so happy I found this video! You were brutally honest and I feel more prepared going into my first day on Monday, June 8th. I am also working the 3-11:30 pm shift. I chose this job because I too want to work in the psych field, specifically a psych nurse practitioner. I currently have my bachelors in psych and am in nursing school. Again, thank you so much for this video. I hope life is treating you well during this crazy time.
I love this video and I identify so hard with this. ♥️ I love your perspective of your work and I can tell your heart is really in it. We need more people like you in the field!
Thanks for the video Oliver! This was very informative because I recently applied for a Psychiatric tech job and I don’t entirely know what to expect but your video was put together well and I have a much better idea of what I’m getting into.
U sound like a wonderful person w/ the right attitude. (: I believe you’re gonna do great in this field. It is draining but like u say, we gotta take a “me” day. Put our own mask on 1st. Yes, do let us know how I like it a yr later & where u hope to go w/ it. So many career options ahead.
First female Oliver I've ever seen, anyway I'm about to start a bht job. I would recommend you look at the lcsw route, social work, if you want to be a therapist. If you get your bachelors in social work its only another year to het your masters and the lcsw has more power than a lcpc or whatever the masters level psychology license is in your state.
I’ve been looking into getting into this field. I’ve never been to college because I just never knew or had an idea what my purpose was or what I should have a career in sadly. I’m 34 now …do you think I’m too old to enter into this? Plus I have severe adhd
I have an interview for a MHT position this week. I feel like if I get this job, then I’ll know for sure if I’m supposed to major in psychology or social work. My major is currently English.
Sierra Smith thanks for watching, Sierra!! to answer your question, every facility is different. some places require that employees have a bachelors degree in psych and or social work, while others just look for a high school diploma / GED and willingness to help! it really just comes down to researching the places in your area based on your experience level!
I am considering going into the same field. My goal is to become a music therapist in a mental health facility. Thanks for sharing this video. Also, can you do a job update please? Would love to hear how it's going.
I’m doing my MSW and thought this would be a good job to get into before graduating. It seems like it would be a good way to get some psych experience and interact with therapists
Hi Oliver! I have a question. I currently work as an uncertified pharmacy technician with Walgreens. Im working with them into getting my PTC. Would having that help me if I started to work in this career field? This field has made a pretty big impression on me & I would like to learn more about it & soon become part of it. Im just like u. Hard to keep a job that isnt going to help me pursue my longtime goals. So I know that I want to help people, considering I struggle with my mental health & I want to people who often have the same problem. Thanks💕
I noticed that you haven't been too active on your channel, but I hope you're doing well. I applied for a MHT position and if I get the job, I know to come back to this video to feel better. I understand how difficult it can be for people to work with people who are in critical condition. It's really scary to think that these peoples lives are in your hands.
Hello I hope someone reads this question: Do I need to get a certification to start working as a technician. Also, where would I go to be certified. Please comment.
Than you for this video. I am struggling in my own life with my mental health and I'm striving. I really am gonna discuss this with my therapist and see if I can handle doing mental health tech work while I want to pursue being a mental health therapist. Best of luck in moving forward. You seem so sweet!
👍🏿👍🏿🖤🖤💙💙Thanks For The Video It Was Very Informing. I’m Gonna Be In This Field By Next Month I’m Hoping To Really Be Able To Assist Change Teens Lives Before Taking Over The Future
I’m interested in becoming an MHT during college, BUT I’m trying to pursue a degree in the culinary fields. The reason I want to me an MHT during college is because my twin has been in and out of the MH and the technicians there were awful (I understand this varies from hospital the hospital, but I know a lot of patients out there are being treated awfully) and I was wanting to become an MHT so I can help and be a good reliable MHT. I am aware of what I will have to go through, and that you found a hospital that doesn’t need a degree and I was wondering if a hospital would hire me as an MHT even though I’m looking at a future In the culinary fields? I’m genuinely interested in helping people and I think the MHTs were a huge impact on the way patients viewed the hospital and they made a huge impact on recovery.
what are you up to now? Have you thought about being a peer recovery specialist as well? some earn more than 50K depending on education, and would be good while you get your masters...
I live in kentucky and i want to become a mental health tech! every college i applied to i had applied for a bachelors in psycholgy, will I have to get my assosiates before a bachelors?
Angel Michelle Nope! You can apply to start directly with a Bachelors program. I’m personally getting my associates first due to better finance options. Kentucky buddies!!!
jesse536801 does the type of associate degree matter? Can I become a psychiatrist technician no matter what type of associate degree I have, as long as it’s in psychology?
Thanks so much for your perspective. I’m considering a job as an MHT and found your video really helpful. You seem like an amazing person. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors!

Great overview and transparency thanks for the information God bless you on your journey👍🏾
Thank you that really helped
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Yes! We must have a support system for our own self care. Like on an airplane, we have to put our own mask on before we can help someone else.
Wow thanks soo much I really needed this.
