About 2 years ago I watched this video and was just soooo happy to see someone that looks like me in the same field I just began my graduated program in. I found your videos sooooo inspiring and well, I passed my BCBA exam today! Thank you for being one of the first faces of color I saw in this field! You provided hope and inspiration!

Girl!! I was so happy to search "How to become a BCBA" and find YOU!! You're an inspiration! I'm going to take a chance and pursue ABA! My original plan was to become a dentist and I was so close to applying to dental school (literally in my final steps). But I got a job as an RBT during my gap year and fell in love with the field. I saw I was making a real difference in the lives of children, way more than I could ever do in dentistry. So I decided this is the field for me! Thank you so much for making all these helpful videos! I'm learning so much and so excited :)

Hey Dom! I am a kindergarten teacher and this year I have a student who is on the autism spectrum. I truly would love to give him all my attention but with 19 other students it is truly impossible. This sparked a new found love in me and a co-worker had me research what a BCBA is. I instantly fell in love and I will be submitting my application to FIT today! I love your content! I am also a huge fan of SCSU's Marching 101 band! Thank you for this!!! I’m in the process of choosing which path to take for my BS. Essentially my entire life and career path to this point has encompassed nearly every possible aspect of the special needs and developmentally challenged universe!
SN: I don’t like to use disabled simply because I feel it automatically imparts a negative and even hopeless connotation to the individual and I’ve found it also makes them feel hopeless in regards to what they are capable of accomplishing in the future!
So many coworkers have been suggesting I focus more on the social work path because they say I’d have a much wider spectrum of fields to choose from. But I’ve always been more scientifically minded vs the humanities track. I love that I found this video while researching the requirements for an RBT position with the facility I’m currently with. I’ve always thought like you do a far as not having ever had the privilege of being able to focus ONLY on my education because there’s also life and work and kids that require my energy and attention! But I hated the way I was made to feel as tho my experiences up to that point were not only invalid but essentially worthless in the eyes of both the employers and the people who’s literal job is to help me figure out how I can take my experiences and get the paperwork behind it so that I’m able to do what I’ve been put here to do which is to help ppl heal and maybe my experiences are actually more valuable than someone whose had every thing handed to them bc I’ll be able to identify and approach treatment goals with my patients from a prospective they can identify with more fluidly?

I am in the process of applying to different graduate programs (1 in child protection and 2 in special education), fingers extra crossed that I am accepted! My main concern has been being able to find somewhere that will allow me to complete hours, most of the degrees I am looking at while are not in ABA, have concentrations where you can take a few extra courses to aid in towards that path. @@domthebcbamom6679 about 4 yrs ago, I started caregiving on the side for a few children with Autism and one of the FIRST questions was "Are you certified in ABA?" I didn't know what it was (none of my students had the services) but the families showed me techniques to use with their child.
I quickly saw it is helpful and needed, especially in the community I work-- I had some students with behavior challenges. Once I learned about it, I asked the families if they ever considered ABA therapy and they hadn't heard of it! So now, a goal is to be able to provide services in my community.

I was looking at psych jobs through indeed to figure out what I want to shoot for and I saw this career come up a lot. It's one of my passions to work as sort of a life coach/ crisis counselor, but I also want to get paid a decent salary. So glad I discovered this profession!! Almost done with my psych undergrad, my gpa is above a 3.0, but its still pretty blah. I'm hoping this works out.
Also I just got a job as a direct support professional! I would be assisting adults with developmental disabilities. Would this help me advance towards my bcba goal?
Edit: Nvm you answered my question! I'M SO EXCITED

I was enrolled at ASU (Arizona State University) to become a BCBA got burnedout!!!!!! 🥵 so I am on break and I am not sure if I want to return back to school not sure if this is for me. I have a Master's of Science degree in Human Services specializing Social and Community Services not doing nothing with that degree and I have a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design and Marketing not doing much with that either cant find work trying to maintain my current business but it's not making any sells. I am previously on voluntarily inactive status as a RBT in the process of trying to renew my RBT certification now but I changed my mind I dont think this is for me too hard and the school thing is not working all the hours and money you have to put in just to get the hours you need and the exams you have to pass not for me thanks for sharing sorry for the long comment lol

I understand being nervous about going back to school after being out. But 2 years isn’t that long. Beside, I’m sure you took that time to gain experience while teaching. If you are looking to gain more experience, you can start with in-home ABA, working with adults in CILAs or day program or right in the schools.

Hi Dom! Thank you for the insight in your video. I am studying to be a BCBA and I am overall just nervous. I was a teacher for 2 years and enjoyed it, but life directed me into ABA. I have been an RBT for a year and have a good supervision set up. You mentioned parent trainings would be difficult for BCBAs who don't have children. I can understand the importance of having experience as a parent, to then give training as a fellow parent AND BCBA. But, what should I do if I don't have kids yet? Thanks! - Kaylee

I would apply to other schools, unless you really want to raise your GPA. But I will say that any ABA masters program is difficult, so if you think you will need extra support, I would start advocating for that now (e.g., support from family, finding a study group, setting aside hours at a time for just studying purposes) I would apply the same principles I mentioned in my How I Passed the BCBA Exam On the 1st Try video, to your masters program. I hope this helps

That parent part is so true. I am not a parent myself and won't even begin to say I understand what it's like. But I worked as a teacher for 8 before becoming an RBT (hope to become a BCBA soon), so I have had lots of experience talking with and partnering with parents. Watching the young 24-26 year olds at my job talk and "train" parents can be painful. Like for some of them their first experience being around kids happened this year. It's comical at best. Lol.

I have a bachelors and masters in Anthropology. Anthropology relates to human behavior so I'm assuming it'll still count rather than getting a masters in ABA or psychology. The plan was to never go into ABA. I didn't even know what it was until I got a part time job as a RBT for some income... but then I fell in love with the job!!
Now I'm trying to figure out my next steps. I'm assuming my next steps are:
    1. Continue getting RBT experience
    2. Finish BCBA coursework (QUESTION: is the BCBA coursework like going to school to get another degree? How long does it take? How expensive??)
    3. Take the BCBA exam
Please serious answers... is there anything I'm missing?? I'm stressing out because I'm trying to picture a clear direction that I can go forward with. I started taking to 2 BCBAs and their routes to becoming a BCBA are different.

Great question. Are you currently in an ABA program? I think your masters has to be in education, psychology or ABA. But I would speak directly to a university administrator or adviser to see where you land.
Step1: find a program. It could be you getting a second masters or you entering into a certification program. Either way, it may feel like you’re getting a 2nd masters because you are learning a whole new science. But if I can do it, you can do it!!
Step 2: FIND A BCBA SUPERVISOR (major step). You would need 2000 supervised hours and you can do this while in your masters program.
Step 3. Prepare for the exam.
      Step 4. Pass the exam
CELEBRATE and impact lives with your unique skill set of Anthropology and ABA😁. I hope this helps. Please don’t forget to subscribe and share with a friend

If you enjoy working in homes and with the ABA populations, I say go for it! You can take the track to becoming a BCaBA with a bachelors in a related field + BACB requirements, or you can take the track to becoming a BCBA by getting a masters in ABA or a related field. I would talk to a program representative to see what modifications can be made or taken from your current education and experience and applied towards your degree. But if you do decide to get your BCBA, you would be a great candidate for clinical director roles or opening your own multi discipline therapy facility. You would also be among the few black women who are dual credentialed. It all boils down to “What you value and what are your 5-10 year goals”? Either route is perfectly fine. But I do often find myself wanting to go back to school for counseling or psychiatry so that I can future services my clients. Keep us posted on your journey ! ❤️❤️

That’s a good point. But our job as behavior analyst is to decrease the likelihood that the child would hit anyone by functionally addressing their needs. Honestly I can on 1 hand the number of times(very few) I’ve been hit by a client. But it was always a teachable moment for me to adjust my approach to the client. They aren’t just hitting because they hate YOU., they are usually trying to communicate something deeper. I encourage you to research functions of behavior. Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Evening,
Love your content. I have been researching bcba and plan to start early next year. As a parent I wanted to ensure I am proactive regarding supervision. When you did your supervision were you able to be on the clock or did you have to resign for your position but stay with company to get supervision hours. I know now the hours are 1500 or (2000 supervise)
    Thank you

Hey Tara! Great question. Yes I still had my job as a case manager in a different department & in my spear time, I would complete my supervision hours with the behavior department. I eventually left my job because I found myself being away from my son too many days out of the week. I eventually came back. I believe the programs are 1500 hours for independent fieldwork, 1000 hours for practice and 750 for intensive. But this may change in Jan 2022. I hope this helps and good luck. Please keep me posted.

NOW you just need a Masters Degree in anything and then you can go to a school that has the ABA Certificate.

    • @domthebcbamom6679
      @domthebcbamom6679  2 роки тому

Not quite. You can have a bachelors in anything but your masters degree has to be in applied behavior analysis, psychology, or special education. These requirements may have changed a bit since I passed the exam over five years ago but your master should be in a similar field. I hope this helps

And will I have to start out as an RBT? How can I get my field hours as a bcba? thank you! P.S. your son is so cute! Hiiiii! And we have so much in common. Eager Amusement Hey, I’m sorry I missed your comment. GREAT QUESTIONS! I love your background. We are pretty much twins in our career paths. I think moving to ABA is a great idea. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology has a great online program & you can apply for the BCBA Respecialization program which is only 7-8 courses because you already have a masters in the field. That’s what I did. It still took me 2 years because I didn’t load up on classes (because I’m a mom w/ a full time job). So are you! But if you wanted to finish sooner you could. I would start to gain my supervision hours after your first ethics course (requirement). You wouldn’t HAVE to start as a RBT. It doesn’t hurt but it’s not necessary. But you will receive a lot of RBT/ BCBA experience during your supervision. You can also start getting experience now. I hope this answers your questions. Please keep us posted on your journey!

Hi Dom! I just graduated with my bachelors in Psych this past December (yay!). I am currently applying to online BCBA programs. The only thing is that I don’t have much experience in the field and I’m a bit intimidated in regards to asking for supervision when and if (let’s cross our fingers) I get in. I am part of a research lab that deals with working with parents and youth 13-17 which looks into social relationships, sleep, and delinquency due to COVID every check-in and interview has been online through zoom. We each handle about 15 cases. Would this be thought of as a bit of experience or do you recommend becoming an RBT in the meantime until school starts in August/September? I apologize if this was long!

Hi friend, if I wanted to transition from BCaBA to BCBA, do you know if the 1,000 hours I've already completed will count toward the 2,000 required for BCBA hours? Or will I have to complete an additional 2,000 hours before becoming a BCBA?

Hey Friend! Great question!! My first mind says, if the 1,000 hours was completed within the last 5 years of sitting for the exam they should count towards your BCBA. But, there are so many new requirements for 2020, I would call or email the BACB to make sure. They’re usually responsive. I hope this help! And good luck on your future journey.
