My personal favorite lesser-known PS1 game is Thousand Arms. It was a JRPG produced by Atlus, and it had a pretty deep built-in weapon forging system that was also tied to a dating sim. Basically, you'd date the girls you met in each town and level up their relationship with you, then you'd take them to the smithy and they'd help you forge new spells and abilities into your weapons.
I can't believe I never heard of this game until this comment, that sounds great, like an alternative Persona Social Links system 😁 Will check it out now, thank you 😁
A couple of PS1 games I don't hear people mention much: Alundra: A good, solid 2d Zelda game. Doesn't do much to innovate, but the story is good. In Cold Blood: A futuristic spy adventure by the people who made the Broken Sword games. It's a sort of blend between a point-and-click adventure and a tank-control style game. I really enjoyed the story and its dark themes.
Holy SMOKES, BRAVE FENCER MUSASHIIIIIII!!!! O Dweeb, this is the retro game that inspired me to get into retro gaming. I remember being a very small boy, maybe 8 or 9 years old, and I was at a buddy's house for a sleep over. He had a PSX demo disc with Brave Fencer on it and we played for hours, repeating the demo over and over. For years I could only remember the title and the dude's spikey hair. I only just got into this hobby within the last year, but have learned my way around so many handhelds and firmwares thanks VERY MUCH SO to you, Dweeb. And Brave Fencer Musashi was literally the first title I made sure I had.
Silent bomber, Panzer Bandit, and Einhander! Einhander is maybe the best shooter that never had a sequel, PS1 exclusive that is unknown to many. Every boss has MANY ways to take it down which was is so shooter unique even today.
The Miss Adventures of Tron Bonne is criminally underrated. Also a physical copy of the game with the Megaman legends 2 demo, sells for around $2,000. How insane.
I remember the media play stores in Cincinnati actually put the thrill kill strategy guide on shelves before the game was set to release. I remember anticipating that game so much and when it was canceled when electronic arts bought the company I was extremely disappointed. I still have my PlayStation with the thrill kill lid sticker from PSM Magazine on it.
The nostalgia hit hard seeing the old Toys R Us yellow cards on the wall. That was so much fun to get to pull that slip and take it to the side corner for games. Definitely miss the old warehouse layout Toys R US's. Brave Fencer Musashi and Threads of Fate are amazing.
Great video! Before I even watched I had Brave Fencer Musashi and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne in the back of my mind as they are some of my favorite PS1 games as well. Color me surprised! Glad you are spreading the word about these and other gems!
Two arcade racing games out of the usual norm: Ray Tracers - like Chase HQ with robot bosses RC de Go! - isometric Racing with miniature RC cars, with speed boosts and more
I still remember playing thrill kill with my Grandma.... I would come over, we would bake some cookies, play a little thrill kill then we eat the cookies. Good times man.
‘Hogs of War’ is my all-time favorite game! This might be the first time I’ve seen it mentioned in any sort of hidden gems list. You made me smile, Dweeb!
Not sure if unknown PS1 game, but Overboard! (Shipwreckers! in the US?) is still quite a charming game and not spoken about too often. Has that Psygnosis feel to it, and definitely a better pirate ship combat game than Skull and Bones.
Fantastic game! Another honourable mention, although on PS2, is Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat as a surprisingly fun open-world, cartoonish pirate adventure/platformer. Like a primitive Black Flag for kids.
Blazing Dragons is one of my fav PS1 games. A hilarious point and click adventure game influenced by Monty Python with voice acting from Terry Jones and Cheech Marin.
All of the Tecmo's Deception games are GREAT! Glad to finally see one mentioned on a Playstation game list. There are 4 total games in the series: 1-3 are on PS1 and 4 and its standalone expansion are on PS3 & Vita
For me, the game that I loved that no one seemed to know about (Save my friend who gave me his copy) was Vanguard Bandits. I just love that game. Mech fighting, multiple endings, killer soundtrack. Still one of my all-time favorite games.
These are the exact kind of videos I needed after buying my first emulation handheld. I'm not well versed at all in PS1 so this is really opening it up some more :)
Great list I'ma try out Dark Delusion first. Looks awesome! I remember playing Mushashi on a PS1 demo disk when it first came out, I forgot all about it until now.
Almost forgot ONE. Run and gun with Blade Runner aesthetic. Admittedly has some sticky camera angles that make a few platforming jumps annoying (common PS1 issue) but the gist is the more you destroy the more powerful you get and when you get moving it’s amazing.
ONE isn’t on Einhanders level (Einhander is an all time lost great) but ONE is a game that has music, vibe, and action that was passed over by too many because it’s camera hadn’t caught up tonite vision when almost no games camera had.
My favourite PS1 game that it seems people don’t know about in general is Alundra. Where as Brave Fencer Musashi is like a 3d Zelda, Alundra is like a 2d Zelda, but with way more of a story focus. The gameplay is solid, there’s some great puzzles, and the OST is utterly amazing! Check it out if you like action RPGs
Right on, the PS1 is my GOAT. Lesser known gems - "The Divide: Enemies Within", "Rival Schools: United by Fate", "Saiyuki: Journey West", "Future Cop LAPD", "Trap Gunner"
You have no idea how bad i was looking for brave fencer musashi. Must have been years. I had an extremely faint memory of it and couldn't find a way to look for it, then i saw it in your video!!! Thank you!
Best one is still Spyro the dragon (1). Its beyond amazing. Graphics aged fantastically. Gameplay is really easy to get into, yet gets more challenging the further you get into the game. The music by stewart copeland (from the band “the police” ) is awesome. It feels kind of like an open world. The movement is really fun in this - especially the running mechanic (which makes it feel like a racing games sometimes), the cutscenes are short and skipable, the characters all look amazing, the whole game has the same theme - but then also ever world and level have a different theme. The whole game is so well written and coherent! The colour palettes are very pleasing to the eye, there is no onscreen visual clutter. I think its truly the best game for the system. - anyway Techdweeb, love your videos of keeping this ancient technology alive!
I had all of these, including Thrill Kill. It got leaked back then and was spread about via copies that would play without a need for modding or anything like that. It was surprising, to the point that I used the title for a name of one of my Evil Adam songs. For the MOST Zelda like game, though, that would go to Alundra. Brave Fencer Musashi is a great time but I definitely feel like Alundra is way more Zelda like.
Good call on Decrption, Tron Bonne and Brave Fencer Musashi. Love that last one to bits, as well as its sequel on the PS2. Here are some more hidden gems i hope Techdweeb covers soon: Trap Gunner - a top-down 1v1 arena fighter/shooter involving trap setting similar to Deception series. Slap Happy Rhythm Busters - a 1v1 3D fighting game like Rival Scools, but with rhythm game based finishers. Omega Boost - a 3D space mecha shooter akin to Zone of the Enders, but on the PSX. Silent Bomber - another 3D action game where your character places bombs on opponents while didging them and their attacks. Racing Lagoon - an RPG Racing game (yup you read that right) that was never released outside of japan and only recently received the full english fan translation patch.
I just got my flipdizzle and immediately loaded up Brave Fencer Musashi. One of the best of all time! Also, I played D3:Dark Delusion back in the day. I didn’t like it as a kid, but in hindsight, it was a really brilliant game.
Brave Fencer Musashi is one of the main reason I've been setting up a phone with a controller and front end to begin with. Great voice acting too. Pretty rare in a PSX RPG.
RC Stunt Copter is a PSX game that is very near and dear to me. My late step dad and me used to play the heck out of it because RC Helicopters were his absolute passion. Also, the tutorial guy will constantly mock you if you mess up - they simply don't make games like that anymore xD
Great list Dweeb, Brave Fencer Musashi is the GOAT from all of these. Small correction though, you pronounced it "Alusaneet" kingdom, it's actually the "All You Can Eat" Kingdom (Allucaneet) and it's supposed to be a food pun, all the habitants of the kingdom have names that are food puns, Princess "Fillet", Steward "Rib"son, Butler "Livers" and so on, while the villains are drink puns, the main villan was Generalissimo Tequila in Japan but they changed the name to Führer Flatski, then you have "Root"ski, Gingerelle (Ginger Ale) and so on
I remember really liking Roll Away and I don’t hear about it on the UA-cams. It is a puzzle game where you play as a ball, rolling through the levels. I don’t recall a story, but it got harder with each level
Azure Dreams - A rogue-like RPG with monster taming aspects as well as a meta-game/progression tied to rebuilding a city. One of my personal favorites that sounded like a fever dream when trying to describe it to friends these days. Good stuff though.
I have played thrill kill. Thanks for presenting the other games, really nice. I love playing Bust-A-Groove 2. The music, characters and gameplay, fun competition for a dance game. Also bought the handheld you are using & love it.
Vagrant Story is one that comes to mind. Maybe not the most hidden gem, it was popular with critics and won awards, was released by Square, who were kind of a big deal back then. But I only ever knew one friend that had it, and I played it all the time at his house. It was a full 3d action RPG with a turn based system and let you attack specific weak points on enemies, but when you started your attack time would unfreeze. It took a lot of practice to get hits in on enemies before they could hit you back. You could chain attacks together, and iirc, the weapon/armor crafting was pretty deep. I have no idea what the story was about, but a lot of the monsters were stuff of nightmares, weird twisted enemies. It was hard though, I don't think we ever ended up beating it.
One to pick up immediately is Spider: The Video Game. You play as a robotic cybernetic spider fighting other bugs to make your way into a rival defense research corporation. And the music is incredible. Played it nonstop as a child (though it’s probably not a kids game)
8:24 Damn I didn't know there was a game in PS1 like that. I was looking for a game that has the same concept since I loved "Trapt" on PS2 which has the same mechanic/gameplay. Thanks for recommending this!
Thanks For Thrill Kill Dweeb! Never heard of it before, but what a great game. The ROM is not on vimms lair or in most archives. The first couple of downloads were in weird file structures (Now my computer probably has pc aids lol) but after a few goes I finally got a bin and cue that i could convert to a nice tidy chd!! Keep up the good work chap!
ps I'm English, I thought I should add, that calling you chap at the end, is like calling you dude or buddy. (You may already know that but i'm just putting it out there in case you don't!!)
Life's been rough, and I haven't been watching your videos lately. Forgive me. 😭 I missed your videos, dude. I hope all has been going well, and Merry christmas to you and yours! I have two recommendations: - Floating Runner: Quest for the 7 Crystals. - Death Trap Dungeon. Both of them are difficult. I also just wanna throw in Croc because he's a cute lil crocodile dude.
The one game I found in bargain bin one day, that I've never heard anyone ever mention, is Battle Hunter. Its missing some polish to be considered a gem, but my friends and I had a blast. A turn based RPG where you could make your own character AND it was 1-4 player with your friends using their own characters. Definitely a bit on the weirder side and low budget though.
Omg. Thrill Kill. I have so many hilarious memories with Cleetus. You could only play this at local Comic Book shops in my area since they couldn't sell it.
Perfect timing Dweeb, I'm downloading PSX games onto my jailbroken PS VITA (An excellent handheld that Sony didn't support enough) as I type! I'll have to check these games out!
I loved playing Brave Fencer Musashi growing up. My friend was obsessed with Squaresoft games and had all of them. I have rarely heard of anyone mention BFM or the Parasite Eve series. Ehrgeize was another interesting one with the Diablo like dungeon crawler style for single player and a Street Fighter type multiplayer with Squaresoft characters like Cloud Strife and Sephiroth.
Small soldiers was such an awesome PS1 game! I don't know if it was well known or not, but the multipleyr was sooo cool! I spent long weekends playing just that with my siblings.
Great stuff found a few thru this now, thanx! My recommends of lesser known ps1: - Team Buddies - War of the Worlds - Invasion From Beyond / B-Movie - IS: Internal Section - Return Fire - Tail Concerto - V2000 - Vib-Ribbon - Tiny Tank
Well, as an experienced gamer from the Sega Master System/Nintendo era all the way through now, I must say, that 2 of the 5 games, I did not know about and as the video played, I've already procured them and turned them into CHD files and uploaded them to my Miyoo Mini Plus and my RG35XX SP. I can't wait to try them!
@@saintninja66 yeah not many people add Deception to hidden gem lists. At least in my experience. Glad to see someone else who appreciates them in the comments too. If you want another game to play in the series look for Trapt (Kagero II: Dark Illusion in Japan) on the PS2.
im the same with Tron Bonne, i played it before playing megaman legends, so i didnt even know it was a spinoff of that, but i enjoyed my time playing it, thats why i enjoyed when you did a video on it as well as for games, another zelda-like game i played is Threads of Fate, you can choose to play as 2 characters, a mage girl who gets different spells i think as you progress, and there's this melee guy who's progression is more on getting a copy of monsters you kill, then you can transform into that, im actually currently playing it on my rg35xx+ as well funnily enough
Oh man, choosing just one PS1 game to recommend is so hard! One of my favorite things about the PS1 is that there are so many incredible games in it that nobody has ever heard of! By far my favorite is YuGiOh Forbidden Memories- which takes the YuGiOh cards and lore and makes them do things that a physical card game could never do. Super creative and unique use of the license that IMO holds up a lot better than the card game itself. I also love _Ninja: Shadow of Darkness_ which not a lot of people have heard of despite being made by the Tomb Raider team. I grew up with this game and I'm honestly surprised it's not more widely known - a real hidden gem of late 90s action games. In some respects it reminds me of the classic Ninja Gaiden NES games, but in 3D. I also think far too many people neglect the amazing Japan-exclusive PS1 library. My go-to recommendations in this regard are the fighting game _Shaman King: Spirit Of Shamans_ and the beat-em-up _Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger_ (both from Bandai I believe). Both are licensed games from the very tail end of the console's lifespan, and as such are quite good-looking titles. There's great recommendations on other genres, but the language barrier makes them hard to recommend to everyone.
I had definitely not heard of Tron Bonne. You mentioned it real quick in another video so I decided to give it a shot and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite PS1 games. So thank you for that. A lesser known game that I’ve always liked is Vanark. It’s not perfect and has some major flaws but it’s still a lot of fun. Kinda the PS1/Anime version of Star Fox. It’s a great game to play on a handheld too.
Oh, I'd definitely suggest Hidden and Dangerous (tactical ww2 shooter in both first and third person), Warpath: Jurassic Park (fighting game with dinos) and Soviet Strike (helicopter shooter with some impressive cutscenes)
@TechDweeb is there a place or a plan for a playthrough / let's play from you? I belong to majority of peeps here who like your style, so something more relaxed (but still passionate since it's you) would be dope!
My personal list is, Raystorm, Rage Racer, Razor Freestyle Scooter, Front Mission 3 and Ape Escape. Love your videos dweeb, hope to see more about psx!!
In my country, at least in my ps1 rental back in the day. Ape escape is the most popular adventure games after crash bandicoot and metal slug Also my underated ps1 gems is bakusou kyodai let's go, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue, and, crush gear turbo
Deception 3..yeah i love that game, that's why i always have deception nightmare princess installed in my vita, you can play as all the heroines in the series.
Hogs of war looks soo cool. Im getting it right now. I use to play this game called Tanks on my browser in school when I was little. It was like worms but worst but you play with Tanks. It was really fun. Gotta check this one out.
I remember Thrill kill, just checked it’s not on my Miyoo mini + roms 😢 .I was playing tron bot few weeks back, great game! Love these hidden gem videos.
I used to love Warpath - Jurassic Park, it's like a more modern Primal Rage. Also, Starfighter Sanvein is fun... oh! and Omega Boost! that one can be pretty exciting. And if you include translations: Mizzurna Falls feels like Twin Peaks, and there's also Tear Ring Saga, which is exactly like Fire Emblem (and for good reason too if you read a bit about its story). I love there videos! Thanks Dweeb!
Silent Bomber, Tobal, and especially Die Hard Trilogy. I don't think Vagrant Story and Valkyrie Profile count as lesser known, but they deserve shoutouts.
"Ten Pin Alley". I love a good bowling game, but not just any. Some of my favorites are from tekken tag tournament and super monkey ball, I like them a bit different. While Ten Pin Alley is "just" a bowling game, it is the one I have played more than any other. Something about the feel and physics is just right, and the music is great. An old roommate and I used to play it for hours on end for its relaxed flow and chill ambiance, give it a go! Cheers!
Judge me if you want, but a thing that i always used to enjoy on PS1 was the cartoon based games: "Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time"; "Sheep Rider/Sheepdog & Wolf", "Rugrats" and "Digimon World" 1 and 2, as the "Neversoft's Spider-man" game (which is just better on DreamCast if you can choose), that shouldn't need a mention, cause i think everyone knew it, since its the best Spidey game till this day - so much that every single one of our friendly neighborhood titles since it couldn't sling too much further from what it did! Sure... to compensate theres the dark and grimmier things, as "Akuji", the first "Nightmare Creatures" and the "Legacy of Kain" titles (which weren't the fuzz they turned into before the vampire boom around Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing movie release). But a thing surelly deserve to be mentioned (for me) as a never spoken master-piece is "Bomberman Wars", that catch the bomberman fun and put it in a turn based chess-like board with a cool "castles, knights, witches and dragons" fantasy theme.
VILLAIN!?
Lol... "And I took that personally."
With a big butt apparently.
@@itsTronBonne 🤣

Silent bomber, Panzer Bandit, and Einhander! Einhander is maybe the best shooter that never had a sequel, PS1 exclusive that is unknown to many. Every boss has MANY ways to take it down which was is so shooter unique even today.

squaresoft’s first attempt at making a shooter was actually the best one on the system! 😂
The Miss Adventures of Tron Bonne is criminally underrated. Also a physical copy of the game with the Megaman legends 2 demo, sells for around $2,000. How insane.
One of my all time favorites is Bushido Blade 2, I also like 1 aswell. They're pretty tied, they both excel in different ways
Those games were so great! Can’t forget Tenchu as well!
Perfect timing to open youtube. Love the ps1 games, my most favourite to emulate! Gonna try these if I haven't already :D

Ah, yes, Misadventures of Tron Bonne. The only game I know of where you can commit mail fraud.
I'm so glad to hear you talk about Hogs of War, that's a game i could play anytime. I think over the years i finished the story mode maybe 4-5 times.
Not sure if unknown PS1 game, but Overboard! (Shipwreckers! in the US?) is still quite a charming game and not spoken about too often. Has that Psygnosis feel to it, and definitely a better pirate ship combat game than Skull and Bones.
Yes! I only played the demo from the PlayStation magazine because I was broke, but I have great memories of Overboard!

Oh My god, you absolute legend. Completely forgot about that game, but as soon as I read Overboard in your post it all came flooding back
My clear purple R36S has over 300 PS1 games on it. Its my dedicated PS1 device. Currently playing thru Legend of Legaia. Fun story. Fun combat!
did it come with 300 PS1 games!!??
@antwango idk how many it came with. I always put my own OS and Roms on my handhelds.
Just added the hd textures on legend of legaia and it is beautiful!

Hogs of war was one of my favorites
There is also a PC version, available from GOG no on sale. I am guessing they are exactly the same game.

VAGRANT STORY, THREADS OF FATE, SUIKODEN 2. THIS IS THE WAY
Suikoden II i second. Pure RPG bliss
Threads of Fate is seriously under rated. It's probably one of the best Universes SquareEnix ever made
@@Youwouldknowmebtnow woah... don't go crazy now
I don't think I'd call Suikoden II or Vagrant Story hidden gems, but both always deserve extra attention and are among my favorites for the console.
Those are very popular not really "hidden" but definitely "gems"
Hogs of war! Oh man. We had a blast when we were teens with my buddies. So much fun ! 🎉
snes and ps1 are my favorites with Saturn a new favorite recently.
One to pick up immediately is Spider: The Video Game. You play as a robotic cybernetic spider fighting other bugs to make your way into a rival defense research corporation. And the music is incredible. Played it nonstop as a child (though it’s probably not a kids game)
I completely missed out on the PS1, so this is great for me! Love the look of Tron Bonne, always liked playing as her on marvel Vs capcom 2
Please make list of roguelike games from gba snes ps1 n64 even homebrew
I've never met anyone else who had EVER heard of brave fencer musashi, I just re-played it a little over a month ago and beat it. Love that game.
Stealing abilities can be like Kirby or Soma Cruze depending upon how it's implemented.
Reel Fishing 1 on PS1, is probably my favourite game. Spent dozens of hours on that one :)
It's such a peaceful game. I do not like fishing games generally but this one holds a special place in my heart.
Life's been rough, and I haven't been watching your videos lately. Forgive me. 😭 I missed your videos, dude. I hope all has been going well, and Merry christmas to you and yours!
I have two recommendations:
- Floating Runner: Quest for the 7 Crystals.
Sony literally named it "life" and then proceeded to do everything in their power to kill it
I loved playing Brave Fencer Musashi growing up.
RC Revenge. A racing game with a fun level editor.
I remember always playing other friends levels when we visited each other.
Small soldiers was such an awesome PS1 game! I don't know if it was well known or not, but the multipleyr was sooo cool! I spent long weekends playing just that with my siblings.
PS1- my first and unforgettable love. Thanks for this vid my dearest TD🧡🖤🧡🖤
Dave Mirra’s freestyle bmx games on the PS1 are some of my favourite ps1 games they’re so fun and smooth
Awesome picks, my man.
Apart from Hogs of War never seen or heard of the other games when I had my PS1 here in the UK.
Cheers👍
Great stuff found a few thru this now, thanx!
My recommends of lesser known ps1:
- Team Buddies
- War of the Worlds
- Invasion From Beyond / B-Movie
- IS: Internal Section
- Return Fire
- Tail Concerto
- V2000
- Vib-Ribbon
- Tiny Tank
Well, as an experienced gamer from the Sega Master System/Nintendo era all the way through now, I must say, that 2 of the 5 games, I did not know about and as the video played, I've already procured them and turned them into CHD files and uploaded them to my Miyoo Mini Plus and my RG35XX SP.
I can't wait to try them!
einhander is a definite favorite of mine- bought it on release day and still have that copy today
So excited you picked deception!!!! I loved the first two and actually didn’t know there was a third so this excites me!!! Wooohooo
@@saintninja66 yeah not many people add Deception to hidden gem lists. At least in my experience. Glad to see someone else who appreciates them in the comments too. If you want another game to play in the series look for Trapt (Kagero II: Dark Illusion in Japan) on the PS2.
The game with the traps looks a lot of fun I’m going to get it right now thanks for another great video and merry Christmas 🎁🎄
im the same with Tron Bonne, i played it before playing megaman legends, so i didnt even know it was a spinoff of that, but i enjoyed my time playing it, thats why i enjoyed when you did a video on it as well
as for games, another zelda-like game i played is Threads of Fate, you can choose to play as 2 characters, a mage girl who gets different spells i think as you progress, and there's this melee guy who's progression is more on getting a copy of monsters you kill, then you can transform into that, im actually currently playing it on my rg35xx+ as well funnily enough
Hidden gems! ❤ Thanks!
You are one of them! 😁👍🏻
More videos like this please! 😊
@TechDweeb is there a place or a plan for a playthrough / let's play from you? I belong to majority of peeps here who like your style, so something more relaxed (but still passionate since it's you) would be dope!
Not sure how well known it is, but "sheep raider" is a great game i love to pieces.
I love this type of content please do more for other systems! please, thank you!
My personal list is, Raystorm, Rage Racer, Razor Freestyle Scooter, Front Mission 3 and Ape Escape. Love your videos dweeb, hope to see more about psx!!
In my country, at least in my ps1 rental back in the day. Ape escape is the most popular adventure games after crash bandicoot and metal slug
Also my underated ps1 gems is bakusou kyodai let's go, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue, and, crush gear turbo
R4 is the only ridge race needed 😤
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 I love both, but I find Rage Racer much more fun due to the fact that you can modify the cars among other things.
Deception 3..yeah i love that game, that's why i always have deception nightmare princess installed in my vita, you can play as all the heroines in the series.
Great list Mr. Dweeb. My favorite ps1 game is probably star wars jedi power battles. I played it a lot as a kid
Brave fencer Musashi was literally the first PS1 game I ever played as a kid almost 30 years ago now.
Hogs of war looks soo cool. Im getting it right now. I use to play this game called Tanks on my browser in school when I was little. It was like worms but worst but you play with Tanks. It was really fun. Gotta check this one out.
Definitely play the rest of the Deception games. Such an awesomely dark and creative series.
"The Unholy War", it's a game I only ever played the demo of but I am still a bit nostalgic for it.
I think the Hercules game on PSX was dope, the Disney one if I remember.
