Great video! As a guy who's been diving into SEGA Genesis "hidden gems" video lists for a year and a half now, three out of these five were new to me, and I didn't mind the other two either, because I enjoyed the way you presented them. I'd say Dragon's Revenge is the most interesting to me of these five, but Zero Tolerance looks really impressive.
My favorites were Sega Aladdin, Quack Shot, World of Illusion. Yeah everyone's like Castle of Illusion, I like world better. Bigger sprites more animation, you can beat it in like an hour, also two different "stories" depending on who you pick. I thought Castle was too generic 90s platformer for that time. Especially when you go back and play a lot of 90s games that maybe you shouldn't play due to gray areas, and see it's very similar to a lot of 90s Arcade Platformers. Another great one with a fun quasi history lesson, Mickey Mania. Also came out for the Sega CD and I don't know what changes between the two besides soundtrack. Then our parents got us Alien 3 and Predator 2, neither are good.
as a kid i loved playing pinball games, digitally i mean. lately i tried some modern android versions and it's not the same for some reason. i have to check this one. it looks fun. if i still find it lacking in the enjoinment, then i guess it must be me not liking those games anymore.
Nostalgia... If one searches online for the Etymology of this word, one finds that partially this word contains "pain". What is it that "hurts" me? The first generations of computer games were AMAZING. Why? Because those developing them put 100% of their soul in them. Now, gaming has largely become a "game" for those souless and greedy corporations. Had corporations not been involved in the then niche sphere of computer games, then yes, the graphics we see today in games would not exists. And online gaming as we know it would not exist. But graphics and power hungry servers that are maintained 24/7 (to the dismay of Mother Earth) are not what make a game great. Just because something or someone is Popular that does not mean that it serves us well (both as individuals and as a society). Gaming as a term that has been associated with many negative things. That can be reversed only by making them a result of passionate work with no other strings attached.
Can you imagine the types of games we'd have if all the talent in the world came together to make great games for the sake of having great games (instead of maximizing profits)? The mind boggles!
Man, Genesis games are most definitely not my jam. For some reason that style of pixelart put me off. I even have a hard time with games such as Chrono Trigger.
The sound mixing on this video is so good.... I love how the narration is right inside of my head, but the sound coming from the console sounds like it's coming from my phone.
Sonic Spinball, New Horizons, Boogerman, Choplifter, Shadowrun lol y'all gonna hate me but Beavis & Butthead, Ren & Stimpy 🤔 Separation Anxiety, Wonderboy in Monsterworld, Shining Force, Beyond Oasis, Comix Zone
@@gjergjaurelius9798 lol sorry both are top tier titles for their respective system but I played the SEGA one tucked away with headphones on the SEGA Nomad as a kid... If you played this title imagine being up all night sneakily on your own cyberdeck 😏 got the game dirt cheap as a kid in a Blockbuster used bin after much deliberation. Best decision of my life. Ehh minus my children respectively 😁
If you haven't already, try Devil's Crush/Dragon's Fury, also on Genesis. It's the predecessor to Dragon's Revenge and it's the same basic formula, but more metal. I think they toned down the imagery for the sequel to avoid censorship issues
They're definitely on my list. I like the Turbografx version so I'll probably save them for that video. Have you played Demon's Tilt? Modern spiritual successor to that whole series. It's glorious!
Always great content. Thanks for a little break from editing. ❤ Def my favorite other Tech channel. Always entertaining and always inspire creativity. Thank you friend 🙏
I agree on dragons revenge being a good pinball game I own it growing up and it was a really good game Thank you for reading this and I hope you're having a great day, a great week and a merry Christmas and a happy new years to you and your family God bless you and your family God bless you Jeremy Scruggs
Awesome, would love to see your whole list, assuming you continue this series. I mostly missed out on Genesis when it was new, so I don't know what games are good. (especially, which are worth playing on Genesis instead of arcade)
I played Desert Strike on the Amiga 500 back in the day. i did not know there were more games. I'm going to play all of them on my RG35XX+ now 😀 Also The Ooze locks pretty cool. I'll try that as well.
I recognised Zero Tolerance instantly from the intro. Quick point though, Doom was released on the SNES and was fairly playable: ua-cam.com/video/zGIye6Bkxvw/v-deo.html
Never heard of The Ooze. But it was the time when wine, women and song dominated my life. Okay, it was beer, chicks and rock. I returned to console gaming years later and meanwhile enjoyed playing mostly on my PC Lucasarts games with my so. Oh, and RE1, FF7 etc. on the PS1.
How I miss these SEGA games... They were the consoles on which I had the maximum of games!! But I never get the Dreamcast, I prefered to chose the 3DO instead...
I played The Ooze back in the day on the Sega Channel! It definitely tracks that it was the same team that made Comix Zone. Same great art and general polish on both games. And yeah, The Ooze is hard as heck. I don’t think I made it past the first level.
If you have discovered and liked "Dragon's Revenge" and have the emulation means for the Turbografx (RG-ARC for example) It's somewhat based on the Compile/Naxat pinball games on the Turbo, with Alien Crush and Devil's Crush being just as weird and surreal.
I have owned and played both of the TG16 games and it isn't hard to tell where D.R's inspiration came from. I was surprised I hadn't played Revenge but somehow it slipped passed me. Crue Ball is another Pinball game I enjoy and emulate on the SG/MD.
Nice. I like helicopter games, and I haven't heard of this game. I definitely have to check it out 👍. By the way, I once played the game AIRSTRIKE on PC, and it was one of my favorites.
Nice hidden gem collection i like these sorts of vids i play along with what your playing its fun…im also waiting for the arc D in the mail hopefully I get it before Chrissy 🤘🏾yeah dude
There is a modern take of The Ooze. You play as a science experiment gone bad. Instead of gooey ooze, you are gooey tenticle flesh. The gameplay mechanics are very much similar, IMHO. It's called Carrion for anybody that is interested. Not a promo, just a FYI. It is amazing how gaming recycles the same ideas.
So... @Techdweeb, I played the first mission of Urban Strike and I thought you were a frickin genius. What fun! Then I played the 2nd mission on the oil rigs and its damn near impossible. I went from super excited to crushed in about 35 minutes...
There is a difficulty spike, but you just gotta learn new tactics for the new challenges. Make use of those save states! Also I think on the 2nd mission there is an alternate helicopter that is more powerful, make sure you figure out where that is.
TMI but just broke up with girl and just bought a house together, your videos kept me going for the past few days. Thank you techdweeb. Your videos seriously help me keep going
Cool. How about favourite retroarch shaders video, Dweeb? I discovered CRT Geom thanks to you and this is THE shader I use on every retro device with enough juice to run it.
2:57 Plot twist: if you make it far enough in Blades of Vengeance, the Barbarian Babe can have both boobs AND armor! It unlocks in the shop for each character about halfway through, and it completely transforms how they play! One of my favorite Genesis games.
Great list TD, a friend and I finished Urban Strike whrn we were kids. We rented it from Blockbuster and stayed awake until 4am playing it and then paused it the rest of the night and finished it when we woke up.
As a Sega kid, I definitely recommend the "Strike" series (Jungle, Desert, and Urban), as well as the Ooze game. And don't pass up on Mechwarrior, Rock n' Roll Racing, or Poltergeist. All gems.
Dragons Revenge is the only gem I hadn't played. I'm so happy you included it in this video I love digital pinball games and this one is very fun. Installed it on my Analogue Pocket so I can play it as a portable or with my dock as a console game highly recommended for anyone who hasn't tried it.
My first helicopter game I played a lot was Gunship by Microprose on the C-64. I'm really old. It was kind of 3d with stick tanks. I love to play Silent Service and Pirates as well from Microprose. - I like the line "She doesn't need armor because she has boobs." That's so 80's and 90's.
Have you played the G-Police games on the PS1? They are a different kind of futuristic helicopter game. Also R/C Stunt Copter is good fun if you have the patience. It has a strange sense of humor too (made by the Earthworm Jim developers).
Dragon's Revenge was... rough. After Dragon's Fury (aka Devil's Crash/Crush depending on the system), it was going to be hard to have a new team make a game as good as the first one. And to be honest, Dragon's Revenge isn't nearly as good as Dragon's Fury. "Revenge" has some good traits with some of the visuals and that it retains the boss battles, but the balls physics are wonky and the presentation feels sloppier than the first game. So yeah, it's not what I'd call "good." Zero Tolerance on the other hand, is quite good... if you turn off the music. It uses horrid "instruments," that music constantly goes off tempo, and it just really drags down the game. Turn it off, and the game's much more enjoyable. The number of levels, the visuals, the sound effects, the "scaling"... it's done pretty well. It's a bit sluggish to play due to the framerate, but if you can get past that, it's a fun little FPS. Also, check out the unreleased sequel, Beyond Zero Tolerance.
I remember hours playing some Herzog Zwei. A great hidden gem. Super simplified but very enjoyable rts. A buddy and I would stock up and launch all troops as fast as we could to see who could pull off the win on PvP. I can't recall how ruthless the "AI" was back then tbh.
I think i should've waited for this Sega handheld instead of getting a Powkiddy X55. Don't get me wrong, i love my X55 but being a Sega nut of sorts and the Genesis being my favorite retro console, i should have waited for this one. Would've been a no-brainer.
There was a point in my childhood where I was completely obsessed with the ooze and I played it everyday, so much that I even managed to beat it. Recently I've been trying to 100% it but I will have to play it a lot more to regain my skills. Easily my favorite game on the Genesis.
