I think the mother thought that the owl would take the one by her so she grabbed that one but the owl took the other one and she probably realized it when the other baby was gone and she started squawking crazy because it took her baby.
She either couldn't see well enough in the dark to get back, was still chasing the owl (maybe not, since she doesn't have great night vision), or she was killed by the owl. I'm sure there are other possibilities, but I think those are likely.
In the first attack, the mother was going to attack the owl but the other chick (female) was in front, so she was technically blocking her mother's counter-attack. That is why in 1:39, the female chick was the one grabbed by (and suffering under) her mother's talons. However, this can also be seen as a move (made on instinct) to hold the chick down and to prevent the owl from abducting both chicks in a single attack. One of the reasons the term "bird-brain" came about. Already experienced an attack earlier but the mother still did not move the chick to the back of the nestbox. The worse is the mother is behind her chick, which makes it easier for attackers to abduct her remaining chick. Funny thing is that the chick paused her crying to defecate and then continued to squeal again. The chick learned her lesson and finally moved to a corner, but only at 5:30.
Yea, they could both see but the owl sees much, much, better. That's why the falcon attacked it's own baby, but during the day the tables turn. The owl shown wouldn't need to worry about a falcon attacking, but hawks and eagles will attack the nest just like the owl if they can find it.
