  • As the city of Paris sleeps, Spot is hard at work inspecting some of RATP Group's 35,000 civil works components. The RATP Group (Autonomous Parisian Transportation Administration), is a French state-owned public transport operator and maintainer for the Greater Paris area. With thousands of civil works to inspect each year, the company has turned to mobile robotics to inspect hard-to-reach and hazardous areas in order to keep employees out of harm's way.

    Seeing the radio backpack on Spot, I can't help but wonder, why can't they build a servo-controlled flexible antenna into a tail?
    It could reposition the antenna in poor signal environments, use it for balance and also wag when it sees its mas.. er operator 🥰

    • @BHBalast
      @BHBalast Рік тому +16

      From the engineering point of view it's easier and cheaper just to put additional antennas around the robot, also that way antennas are redundant. But the idea is definitely out of the box and that's something to admire :). If they ever make spot a tail add-on, throwing extra antenna on it isn't a bad idea, it just doesn't make sense to add a tail just for that one reason.

    • @KhoPhi
      @KhoPhi Рік тому +10

      For mission critical devices, the less moving parts, the better. Servo-controlled antenna is one more piece of hardware that'll need to "work" when needed.

      @@BHBalast solution to that is to put 2 smaller auxilliary antenne, one either side of the head to act as redundant antenne. additionally, these can then be angled to allow for optimal radio reception while the larger antenna at the rear acts as the primary antenna!

    The "suit" babbels about how successful he is at replacing peoples jobs with automation.
    Meanwhile, if you look carefully in the background, Atlas climbs the stairs to the suits office, where Atlas will be doing the suits job from now on.
    Atlas can post marketing to 1000 social media platforms SIMULTANEOUSLY whilst reciting pre-written speeches about "togetherness" and "key performance indicators" at only 0.1% of the cost of the suit.
