    250 million artworks! I remember when you said in another video something that was a very good point "there are more artworks in the world than there are walls to hang those artworks". I think is important to remember that.
    But it's also important to note that there is actually a lot of crap that passes for art. The market is oversaturated with junk, oversaturated with abstract expressionist minimalistic paintings, this has been done over and over for over a hundred years and also all of the political/social comentary propaganda art probably won't stand the test of time, there's so much of it, it's excessive.
    There's a documentary on the contemporary art market here on UA-cam and even one art critic/curator featured in the documentary says that a lot of of the artworks that you currently see in the galleries will end up in the landfill in 50 years from now.

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  5 місяців тому +4

      Absolutely, there are more artworks than walls to hang them. Most artworks created 50 years ago have also ended up in the landfill and with the further democratization and ease of access to art and art supplies, this tendency will continue. But great art, in the end, stands out. Thank you for tuning in!

    Art has a wide definition. I know artists pursuing the $100-1000 market in art fairs. There are portraitists doing commissions. Artists’ collectives have taken their careers into their own hands, creating work and gallery space together.
    Getting into a name gallery is a goal not only for selling, but to build a reputation, but one can’t obsess about galleries. Work at making your work the best it can be while building community and finding as much venue opportunity as you can. If you are making good art, you have a chance of being noticed by a gallery They are looking for artists who are attracting attention. Just get out there!

    • @war-painter
      @war-painter 5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, you can make money at art fairs, but it’s not the “art world” as we know it. Meaning you won’t get a show at Gagosian on the strength of sold out shows from art fairs, sadly. Winning First Prize in Painting at the Affaire in the Gardens in Beverly Hills (a yearly art fair ) won’t help get you a show in at David Zwirner. I know artists who make approximately $60,000-80,000. doing art fairs year round with slick accessible work, and this is very hard physical work too, I may add. This will not lead to museum retrospectives, but what do I know?

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  5 місяців тому +4

      Art has a wide definition indeed, and there are different career paths to pursue as a creative individual. On this channel, we predominantly take on success in the highest realms of the art world, and this, of course includes gallery representation. It is important to be informed about the pros and cons of pursuing gallery representation or pursuing an alternative career path such as social media, art festivals, commissions, et cetera. As @war-painter accurately points out, the exposure you get from alternative career paths is not the same exposure one needs for gallery representation. So it is important you know what you want, and what you need to do to get it. Thank you for tuning in all!

    Great video. I was actually surprised it’s as many as one in ten making $100k and more! Thinking of the millions of artworks produced annually and the likelihood most won’t sell, it would be interesting to see a piece on how artists deal with a back catalogue of unwanted works - I know it’s a problem many face - and what strategies might be deployed for coping. The same applies to what happens to an artists estate once they pass on, particularly if they were without representation.

      When you're inside the art world, you're surrounded by numerous artists making +100K/year, then the penny drops. They are all in the same place as a herd 😂 Great suggestions! Perhaps an interesting one for a future video. Every week I publish a video, at least two ideas for future videos are added to my to-do list. Looks like I'll have to be making videos for a very long time. I like it! Wishing you all the best, Chris. Stay in touch

    • @PaulPinkman
      @PaulPinkman 5 місяців тому +1

      Chris - I agree on the issue of back catalogue and artists' estate. I've already had to find ways to distribute a lifetime of paintings created by an artist/friend who passed leaving behind approximately 4,000 paintings. It would be so interesting to hear how others are managing this. We were fortunate in that we were able to give away about 2500 paintings. However, the rest of them ended up in the trash. Neither the artist himself nor his family left any inheritance behind to manage his legacy. This was tragic. There are a great many people out there who will take art and care for it but who are either too financially stressed or incapable of paying for it.

      Per U.S labor statistics the average income of a professional artist ( reported ) is $69,000. I think these stats are just from art fairs and big galleries. They are not even close to the actual stats of the full market. Maybe 5% of it. In order for him to have accurate stats on the entire art market every independent artist would need to report the number of paintings SOLD. I have sold 1,399 original paintings since 2016 on social media and that’s just me out of hundreds of thousands of independent artists. That’s an average of 200 paintings a year. I am full time though and am incredibly prolific. I currently only have a sitting inventory of 184 paintings. I would take these stats with a grain of salt personally. Keep creating, know you don’t have to be in a gallery to sell and treat it like a business if you’re going to sell independently. This includes the sale funnel and AB testing in marketing ( that’s what galleries do).

Or... does it include *tiny* sales...(Sunset Beach Art Festival, Greenville NC Arts Festival, etc)? I'm assuming it's focused on venues selling $X in sales per year but....curious.

      The numbers result from various studies encompassing the yearly Art Market Report from UBS and Art Basel, the Artsy Collectors Report, the results from the paper Quantifying Reputation and Success in Art, or the ArtFacts database mapping the art world. Depending on the art fact, the sources are slightly different. Most of them result from the Art Market Report, which is accessible online, and in the appendix, we can find more info on the numbers. As it should be, they have taken a sample that is representative of the total population that was being analyzed. Regarding the income for artists, we combined four studies + the Artfacts database to analyze the population. In short, to answer your question, the income for artists consists of beginner or independent artists as well. When it comes to the galleries, it consist of a sample representative for the total gallery population. Art festivals are a separate topic that is also discussed in the Art Market Report but not specifically in this video. I hope this might clarify things. Wishing you all the best!

      The collectors acquiring over $100,000/year of art buy online, at art fairs, directly in the studio, and in the gallery. The one-time buyers, which aren't big collectors but consist of the majority of all collectors-including the collectors Heather is referring to-also acquire via these different channels. It is most definitely possible to convert potential buyers who have never bought an artwork before into collectors. If there is a connection, a sale is close. Always. Wishing you all the best!

    While I see you may have gotten these statistics from maybe large galleries I don’t agree with this at all as an independent artist as that is not the entire market. Not even close. Social media is changing this rapidly.
    I have been a full time artist now for 5 years selling on social media ( not galleries ) and I have sold exactly 1,399 ORIGINAL PAINTINGS alone since 2016. I have a current inventory of only 184 paintings.
    So, for me personally, these statistics don’t really seem to apply even close. Most of my clients are not deemed “ art collectors “ they are the general public. My work ranges in price from $250 for a 6x6 inch painting to $6,000 for a 30x40 inch painting.
    Also that 1,399 is just original paintings sold. I have also sold fine art tapestries, sculptures, beaded art and painted pottery yielding over 1,500 original artworks sold. That number also doesn’t include prints and merchandise.
    Just throwing this out there for any artist watching this video. It is totally possible to sell a lot of art and make a living at it. If you sell independently you just need to treat it like a business because that’s what it is. Learn the sales funnel, AB testing and marketing 💕

      If your selling as you say why are you not in the primary market? Sounds like people are attracted to your style/work.
      You would be in the category CAI speaks of. I don’t believe there are “factual numbers” representing the category your currently in. I don’t think the platforms would supply it. My take on CAI is it deals in the primary and secondary markets. Understanding that one can extrapolate Julian’s discourse to the category they are in. Not rocket science really; only so many walls-so many buyers. In your category who ever channels this stuff to them, has cost relative to the platform you are using. Your selling but how many on the platform aren’t? There are relative positions here between one discourse and the other. CAI can’t be expected to do a cost analysis of every “kind” of system. Who has that kind of money? I get what CAI is saying and appreciate. Up your game and make real money. Selling as you are you have a better chance then most. 1 in 10 (I take this to mean primary market) according to CAI is making 100.000!

      @@heather_freitas Thank you for tuning in and joining the discussion. Always welcome! First and foremost, congratulations on your art business. Hats off to all creative individuals pursuing their dream job! I wanted to answer one of your several comments on this video one-on-one, as you're stating that the numbers are not correct or outdated. However, they are the most recent and also include independent artists. Statistical research is not done by interviewing the total artist population of 5,000,000, which is impossible. This type of research is about taking a sample that is representative of the total population-thus including independent artists. The Art Market Report by UBS & Art Basel also mentions this upward trend of online sales and direct sales. So I would appreciate it not to spread false assumptions as I simply would have answered your question. So if you have any further questions, feel free to ask and I'll happily assist you further :-) Wishing you all the best! Julien

    • @heather_freitas

      Right, my point is that this maybe now, in modern times, makes up 1-5% of the current market: being that I sell on average 200 paintings a year, I know a few other artist who do the same if not more on social and I’m sure there are thousands of others who do the same.
      The market is changing and I noted in another comment it would impossible to know the actual numbers because how would they pull this data from thousands of other artists who sell independently. The notion that artists need to be in a gallery to make a living is no more. In fact it’s harder to be full time selling through a gallery.
      Independently I have to make double what I would if I worked a traditional job. Supplies, taxes, shipping , marketing, website maintenance, my own health insurance , transaction fees ect. If you’re in a gallery you then need to make double that because they usually want to take 50%… but still except you to market as well.
      Artists are catching onto this and thus a huge explosion in independent artists.
      This video should have started out saying it these stats only represent a very small portion because if someone is trying to make a carrier as a professional artist and they see this they think it’s near impossible.
      Just came here to let people know this is a very very small portion of the art market and it is very possible to make a living as an artist.
      Right now with inflation it’s hard but it’s possible.

      In order for him to have an idea of the actual art market he would need stats from every artist selling independently ( which is an insane number ). These stats maybe reflect 1-5% of the market and are not even close to the reality.
      Maybe like 10-15 years ago when it was just galleries and fairs that did the selling but not today 🤷🏻‍♀️. It’s extremely outdated information.

      A work-life-art balance is required indeed, but it is possible to make a decent income with art-with the right approach, mindset, and talent. But having no (short-term) expectations is crucial here if you want to do the right things. Thank you for watching!

      Keep in mind you make art because it enriches your life. It informs you. Sharing your insights with others brings a certain happiness! The rest is “important” and great if it happens but not the point of the matter.
