Kate is a work of art. Back in the 70s, 80s and 90s she was a musical rule breaker and risk taker. She used he voice as an instrument and kept control of her music at a time when artists and women in particular were expected to be very much under the thumb of the record companies. She was well known for dance and mime and wild artistic videos. She kept herself out of the public eye to raise a family and as a consequence she became an enigma! She is much loved in the UK and has a huge back catalogue that is well worth a listen. Sensual World, Wuthering Heights, Cloudbusting and Babooshka are worth a peek. Ren reminds me of her a lot. Not the sound of course but the attitude, the integrity and the references to literature!

I am so glad someone mentioned This Woman's Work and Cloudbursting. I think I read somewhere that it is Donald Sutherland pulling the cart in the second one.
As every one else has said she's from the UK. Here in the States, a quirky little show on the USA Network introduced us to Kate on Night Flight. (I really miss that show!)
When I met my husband, we were the only two who had ever heard of her. We had a wildly different take on the meaning of the song. But children don't need to hear what it was, LOL.
My husband, with whom I was with for almost 35 years, still played this song (and the others) on vinyl. When he wasn't listening to Pink Floyd.
Thank you for the memories. Now they are good ones. It was only recently I forgave him for dying in a fall. We had agreed I would go first. He had to be stubborn and break his word. See, both our mamas died first after long marriages (I believe it was 33 years for both sets) and our fathers had a hard time adjusting. My husband knew I would be okay. Hearing Kate from your perspective made my day.
Truly, thank you for the memories. I just wish Night Flight would come back.

I actually disagree with that even though as a Brit it was my first introduction to her. I was totally bewildered but also intrigued.
People who haven't heard her think that is her normal singing voice and have no idea of the concept of the song or the novel.
I think for first introduction they are better off with this or This woman's work or even her duet with Peter Gabriel and getting familiar with her talent first.

In 1978, Fleetwood Mac were the biggest act in the world, thanks to the runaway success of their 11th album, Rumours. The band approached Kate Bush and asked her to support them on their massive US tour in support of the album, but Kate declined, preferring to concentrate on developing her own shows.
In a 2011 interview, Stevie Nicks picked "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" as one of her own favourite songs, saying, “That song I really loved because, what a great writer she is, and Running Up That Hill was one of those songs that, when I first heard it, I went, ‘Oh I wanna record that song someday.’”

Before Kate, female chart success was almost completely through songs that women singers had written for them. She was also instrumental in developing the radio mic headset that is almost ubiquitous now in order for her to be able to sing AND dance on stage in the late 70s. She is a HUGE part of my life musically. I grew up listening to her - my poor father would be like ‘she’s running up that damn road again’ as I listened to it for the 300th time on my Walkman in the car lol. I wore out the album ‘The Whole Story’… a good place for you to start as it’s a cross section of some of her earlier stuff that wasn’t overly odd. Because some of it really is - the album ‘Ariel’ has some beautiful music on it, including a song where she sings about a washing machine, and another where she recites Pi. She became big again and wonderfully discovered all over again by entirely new generations thanks to this song you’re playing being used in Stranger Things.

For Kate, dancing was part of her performance. She trained in mime and ballet early in her career and produced her spectacular Tour of Life which involved these different aspect of her performance style. However, it was so exhausting that she never toured again until recently.
This video with its unique choreography was essentially a "farewell to dance" as she was turning more towards filmmaking as a means of self-expression.

Kate Bush's debut single from 1978, "Wuthering Heights", is definitely a classic that you should hear at some point. This song highlights both her emotive delivery and her ability to effortlessly transition between high and low notes. Kate recorded her vocal in a single take, and she was only 19 years old at the time!
With this single, Kate became the first female to top the UK charts with a self-composed song. Kate wrote the song at age 18, in a few hours late at night in March 1977. She was inspired after seeing an old British television adaptation of the 1847 novel Wuthering Heights. She subsequently read the book and discovered that she shared her birthday with author Emily Brontë.
Two music videos, with similar choreography created by Kate, were made to accompany "Wuthering Heights." In my opinion, the first version, known as the indoor version, is the best. Bush is shown performing the song in a dark room filled with white mist while wearing a white dress. Critics have described this video as a milestone in the history of music videos before the MTV era.

She used a Fairlight CMI synthesizer and a LinnDrum drum machine. Fun fact, Peter Gabriel was the first renowned musician to use the Fairlight. You need to listen to his duet with Kate Bush. Beautiful uplifting song.

Kate Bush is a compete artist, she wrote the song, played the instruments. When she was discovered by David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) who got her a record deal with EMI on the strength of her demo (produced by him), she didn't actually release anything for 2 years and spent part of that time learning to professionally dance, her first single at 19 was Wuthering Heights made her the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a solely self-written song. With her music every song is different. Running Up that Hill includes the use of the Fairlight CMI sampler (1st commercial digital sampler).

I've been a Kate Bush from the very beginning, and when in 2022, there was a massive revival of interest in her music (due to a television show), a completely new generation of people were suddenly introduced to her music. So, I decided to help new reactors by putting together a quick introduction to her. In the end, I was writing similar comments to so many that I stored the details in a note that I could "cut and paste," so what follows is that quick introduction, which I hope that you find interesting.
    =========
A quick background summary of Kate Bush.
Kate started writing songs at about 11 years old, adding more complex lyrics from 13 onwards. By her late teens, she had written about two hundred, and the family made demo recordings of about fifty of them in an attempt to attract the attention of record companies without any success. Until a friend of family passed the demos to David Gilmour (guitarist for Pink Floyd), he was interested and ultimately paid for time at a studio with session musicians to make professional master recordings of three songs from Kate extensive catalogue which he selected. It was those professional recordings that he passed onto EMI executives when he was asked about new talents - when EMI listened they wanted to sign Kate up immediately, but they had to wait until she had left school, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16 years old.
EMI paid Kate a retainer, which she used to improve her piano playing, voice lessons and also dance & mime lessons from Lindsay Kemp (who had also taught David Bowie to dance) Kate also fronted a pub band that one of her brothers had put together. Eventually EMI called Kate back to work on her debut album "The Kick Inside" although two songs were taken from the earlier professional recordings that David Gilmour had paid for - notably one of them was written when she was just 13 years old and David Gilmour thinks that was the song that convinced EMI to sign Kate..
Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in January 1978 and it was so different to everything else in the singles chart and became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number 1 in a number of countries around the world and charting highly in others. When it got to number 1 in the UK, Kate became the first female artist to have a self written song reach number one, this was the 1st of numerous records and milestones that Kate has set in the UK single and album charts.
"Wuthering Heights" was Kate's biggest worldwide chart until 2022, when the use of "Running Up That Hill" (RUTH) as a key part of series 4 of "Stranger Times" caused the song to become the most streamed song in the world, for a period of time. RUTH reached number 1 in even more countries worldwide, including becoming Kate's second UK number 1 single 37 years after its original release, one of three UK single records that Kate set. It reached number 3 in the Billboard single chart. Although it did hit number 1 in some Billboard specialist US singles charts.
When "The Kick Inside" was released later in 1978, it sold a million copies in the UK and reached number three in the UK album chart.
Kate has had at least one single that has reached at least number 12 (or better) in the UK singles chart during the following decades, the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s
Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer, and director. Kate was also very heavily involved in the staging of both of her concert tours - 1979 "Tour Of Life" and the 2014 (22-date) concert residency "Before The Dawn", tickets for every performance sold out in under 15 minutes.
Kate has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who followed her, she is considered to be a musical icon and a pioneer.
Kate was credited as a co-producer on her third album, "Never For Ever," and was the sole producer on her fourth album, "The Dreaming," and every one of her subsequent studio albums.
In 2023, Kate was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Yes, she wrote it, played it, sang it and produced it. I love her suites like the ninth wave, love them in fact. The chord sequence in this song has been used so many songs by so many artists in so many genres you wouldn't believe. A lot of American's don't know that Maxwell's hit song, This Woman's Work, was also written by Kate.

I have adored Kate Bush since this song came out when I was 17 years old. She is an acquired taste, though. Some other songs of hers you might want to check out are: "Don't Give Up," which is a duet with Peter Gabriel; "Why Should I Love You?," which is a collaboration with Prince; and "You're The One," on which Jeff Beck plays guitar. Oh, "King of the Mountain," too. Kate wrote that song about Elvis Presley. There are so many other great songs of Kate's, but I thought the ones listed above might be the best place to start for someone new to Kate's music.

I mean, I’m almost 50 years old and I barely knew anybody that listened or knew Kate Bush other than other artists that I’ve heard about. So for her to be Respected that much to be inducted got me emotional.

Soon after in 1980 Babooshka by Kate Bush became the first hit single to feature samples from the Fairlight CMI. This song, you're listening to the CMI. Everything, even some of her voice. SUGGESTIONS 80s & 90s: I love your selection and it is a trip down memory lane, so here are some more suggestions for the 80s and 90s there was a rap/electronica/dance era going on during that time. Since you are into rap I would suggest starting with KLF or 2 unlimited as they have a component of rap in them. But the others are a very good reflection of what the 80s and 90s were about. Here is the list below:
    sabrina - boys boys boys
    real mccoy - run away
    real mccoy - another night
    haddaway - what is love?
black box - right on time
Klf - Last train to trancentral
    klf - 3am eternal
    2 unlimited - magic friend
2 unlimited - get ready for this
    2 unlimited - no limit
    2 unlimited - maximum overdrive
technotronic - pump up the volume
    Requiem - London Boys
    Other songs;
ice house - hey little girl
depeche mode - people are people
    richard marx - hazard
    pet shop boys - heart
