    "Do you wanna be a pocket guy, do you wanna be a chops guy, a progressive guy, a brainiac guy or a total feel guy, a polished drummer, hella raw....I want all of it." This is a genius statement. I always hate to see comments that are arguing over the best drummer, because most of the people arguing aren't even taking into account the different stylistic approaches. That's the most important thing to consider. I've seen drummers that stayed in the pocket and grooved the whole time and never got flashy that blew my mind just as much as the progressive and brainiac guys. I've seen Jazz guys that barely hit the drums, absolutely slay along side guys that went through 20 pairs of sticks in a set. That's the beauty of the art. I love it all. Matt's timing is ridiculously locked in and probably his strongest quality, but by no means his only quality.

  • @nenissaK
    @nenissaK 4 роки тому +3

    For me composing (arranging) drums (also solos) note for note and learning songs, beats, fills etc. note for note has been the greatest teacher at everything I know. It's great because when you do that and practice the lines enough, you pretty much become conscious of everything you do in every way, from the arranging itself to things like posture and other technical stuff. Of course, with metronome also, and with gap metronomes too. Also it helps making your lines more musical and better fit the whole context because that way you have time to listen to the whole song and the drum parts in it.
    But as for live improvisation when performing goes, nope nope no thanks for me, it makes me super nervous beforehand. I don't like performing live, and I don't like performances overall. A big reason why I started composing and making music all alone - no surprise elements and crippling tension. Live pro drumming is not for me, it's nerve-wrecking

    I was wondering if you've ever been through any injuries that inhibited or hindered your ability to play drums? I currently am suffering a hip injury and i am having trouble recovering. It's been months and it terrifies me. Do i just quit my band entirely and stop playing while i heal, or slowly keep playing gradually while trying to heal and get back into shape? I'm 28 been playing since i was 6. Also, I use cannabis daily and wonder if you think it is something you would consider a distraction. your guidance would be much appreciated Dr.Space Groove! • @drummusician
      @drummusician  4 роки тому +1

      Tyler Franco I in fact have struggled with injuries before at several different points in my life. Carpal Tunnel mainly. I recommend reducing output on the drums to allow your body to heal properly because perhaps fully stopping is not necessary depending on the severity of your injury. You band should understand your time will be a bit more limited during this healing period. It is all for not if you aren’t doing the other things that will heal you-improve diet(make sure there are no deficiencies), adjust posture with physical therapy and/or yoga, and be as consistent as possible. Better yet be obsessive with see just how efficiently you can heal. That being said, I am no doctor so, so I cannot give professional medical advice. I do know the struggle though and know it takes a lot of effort to recover from these things with grace.

      umar faruq instead of 6 or 7 16th notes between the guitar chugs, he stretches it out to put 4 evenly spaced notes where the 6 16th notes go, and 5 evenly spaced notes where the 7 16th notes go. So you have to completely abandon thinking about it from the 16th note perspective. When he said “it’s just close enough that I can bastardize it” he meant that the ratio of space for the modulated notes between 4 out of 6 and 5 out of 7 are very close together. 4 hits in the space of 6 notes means you have to slow down the speed by 66.66% percent, or 4/6. 5 hits in the space of 7 16th notes means you have to slow it down by ~71%. Since these are close, he can stretch the feel of both to make them sound as one consistent speed, as opposed to ~4% speed ups/slow downs. Hope that helped.

    • @maqirama

      @@zeusthedrumlord547 oohhh, so it really was like how I thought of it! I thought of it like how you explained tbh, but I was so unsure and thought, it cannot be like that! It is perhaps because I'll always thought metric modulating beat can only be playing in a certain rate of note and modulate it to another (for example, you modulate a 16th note beats into triplets or something or playing a other note groupings inside a certain time signature such as 4/4 (does that make sense tho?)).
      So you can actually play it like that. Wow, that's a serious revelation there for me man. I was so unsure before man, but you cleared the fog out man. Thanks a lot! Like for real! You're really a drum lord!
