    The first song that came to my mind when you played that opening lick is May This Be Love..."Waterfall...Nothing can harm me at all..." I recently bought a EP-3 and EP-4 both as "non-working," but after several hours of work, I got both of them working now. I still haven't found a EP-2 for cheap enough yet. I learned a long time ago, I'm more skilled at tinkering than I am with playing, but Echoplexes are definately fun to play. I dig your playing. Liked and subscribed!

    I built a DIY UniVibe pedal that includes an external speed control socket, a 3-way voicing switch to select between Resley Tone, Voodoo Vibe, and UniVibe voicings, plus a footswitch for bypassing and a second footswitch to select either Chorus or Vibrato mode, both footswitches have Led status indicators, sounds great.

    Got interested in tape delays because of the Hendrix’s songs you spoke about and because of les rallizes dénudées, in a somewhat different register. These things are insane, I tried every types of delay and only tape was able to get me close to what I wanted, doesn’t sound echoey or muddy and the feedback/flutter is so different…I made one not long ago from recorders, the noise is manageable and I always keep a tiny bit of delay as it prolong the notes. This and the univibe are the best combination of effect you can potentially look for.
    So glad you made a demo thanks !

      Yeah, all those circuits are sons, brothers and cousins of the 5F6-A circuit, just different tweaks and tubes. Tru_fi_pedals just posted a bunch of receipts on Instagram of Jimi's gear purchases from Manny's and Sound City and sure enough, there is an Echoplex on there for $200 in 1969 which would have been the EP-2. I'm not sure if it was for the studio or personal use but he bought one.

  • @CorbCorbin
    @CorbCorbin 2 роки тому +3

    May this Be Love, because If 6 was 9 has already been guessed.
    It sounds like the echo on 6 was 9.
    May This Be Love has a subtler echo, and it was likely done in post.
    One live(mostly) studio recording, where Hendrix used a delay, is Once I Had a Woman.
    I still can’t believe Hendrix didn’t bring these and/or Echorecs on the road. Pink Floyd did it, The Who, few other bands, and I think it kept Jimi from playing certain songs live.
    Jimi didn’t use delay on his takes in the studio much. He and Kramer usually did the effects like that in post.
    He was using Uni Vibe with his Fuzz and Wah, in most of the studio takes I’ve ever heard, but the delays on most of those First Rays of the New Rising Sun songs, are all done in post.

    Citation needed. 'Bold as love' was recorded at Olympic Studios, and so it's extremely unlikely that they used an imported American tape echo unit when there were plenty of British models already available. These tape echoes all have motors that make a similar humming sound during operation to an Echoplex, so I don't agree that it's possible to tell the exact model from some vague background noise on a recording. Why would the motor hum from a tape echo be audible in the music anyway, unless the engineers were miking up the unit itself?

    • @millstap
      @millstap  2 роки тому

      I'm sure this will start a great debate which is good. If you Google it, you find out all kinds of interesting debates on the topic. Some suggest it was the Watkins Copycat, or the Binson Echorec. Some engineers have said it could have been made using one of the studio's reel-to-reel decks. I'm not familiar with any of those but I presume they have tapes heads that are easily manipulated like the Echoplex otherwise it would be difficult to get the spacial echo sounds of the Echoplex. On using just British gear, that's not really a factor because they had plenty of USA made gear in their studios including Fender amps and of course, the Strat. On the motor hum, it goes through the guitar signal so there is no way to get rid of it even if they added the echo in post. After this video, I did figure out how to reduce the noise of the whole unit by keeping the volume down to the bare minimum. When you turn it up past 9:00, it starts to get pretty noisy. When you bypass the delay with the footswitch and just go through the preamp, the noise disappears. As soon as you kick in the echo, you can hear the motor. Since the Binson Echorec existed during that time and used by Pink Floyd, it could possibly be that. Eddie Kramer knows and has probably mentioned it somewhere. One of the guys, Phil O'Keefe, knows Eddie and said he would ask him way back in 2011. I think Eddie is still up in Canada. I will try to send him an email. It is surprising how noisy those old recordings were when you listen with headphones. Maybe that's why we love the old analog stuff so much. They had a soulful warmth to them versus this perfectly silent, quantized digital world we live in now.

    • @fuzzboxes
      @fuzzboxes 2 роки тому

      @@millstap I can definitely see musicians being discerning about big brand name instruments & amplifiers, but I'd be surprised if they were so discerning about the subtleties of different tape echoes, to justify importing a Maestro model. I've never heard of any musician using an Echoplex here in the UK, during the 60s, so I don't think they were available in the same way that Fender guitars were.
      I've seen Binson Echorecs advertised in the UK press during the 60s, so the only obstacle for groups like Pink Floyd and the Shadows in acquiring those would have been the steep price!

    • @millstap

      @@robertritchie2860 Our hearts our with you guys. We are certainly grieving with you. Do you think it could have been the Copycat or Echorec that was used? It could have been another unit. I sent a question into Eddie Kramer but I’m not sure I’ll get a response.
