Hi Mikel ! Just found your channel by accident , anyway many thanks for sharing all your knowledge , you deserve more exposition on UA-cam , cheers from France
Voodoo Chile Hendrix used a Fender Dual Showman amplifier I think because the Presence control NF Negative Feedback resistance is different than the Marshall Presence NF Negative Feedback. The vintage amplifiers didn't have an external Presence control because it was fixed preset selected resistance value which they would alter in each fender model and each year. This is a big difference between he rolled back the strats TONE control to get that FAT tone, if you set your fuzz face set both controls at 2 o Clock it will sound like an overdrive pedal like a TS9 tube screamer. Hendrix turned down to D standard tuning also for voodoo chile that is why Steve Winwood had to turn the hammond B3 lower in the studio to D. The "Presence" Negative Feedback is NOT variable control on the older amplifiers but there is a NF negative feedback resistor which is preselected set value at the factory but the presence control makes a big difference when you lower the strat TONE rolled back to get that FAT tone. Make a video lesson about this because its a Hendrix TRICK to do. Keep the Strat volume pot" set at 8 " to get the extra WOODY bassy tone.

Very good and insightful perspective on this legendary tone, such a simple yet unique sound, very very bluesy. Jimi must have known just what he wanted for this song and it came out perfect, one of my all time favorite songs. Cheers and a Happy New Year to you!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This song gives us a good picture that a clear Jimi Hendrix enjoying himself and having some good company was able to come up with the greatest Blues session ever recorded just like that 🤭🎸🔥
Yes! The EchoPlex or Tape Delay really helps get that tone down, I have been playing with it for a few months and came up with that the EchoPlex or Tape Delay was sometimes set up as a reverb, just like the settings you have
I had the idea that it was a mix album with some live records. So I always use my Reverb in the Hall setting to mimic that sensation. I use it also in Watchtower and The Slight Return version but with a little bit less effect intensity. But I never considered the Delay factor. I will try it. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your approach. I think the way you do it to decrease the room/effect a bit for the other songs is a great idea 🎸🔥 In the end the Delay factor is adding a new dimension to the sound - it’s subtle, but you will immediately feel the tone change under your fingers‼️ Enjoy my friend 🔥☮️
There is always one detail to keep in mind when trying to recreate the "legendary sounds": One thing is the sound you hear coming out of the amplifier and into the room, another thing is how it is miked. The sound we are trying to imitate has been miked, mixed and mastered... probably light years away from the sound that came out of the speaker.
@@MikelBluniWhat delay do you recommend for Jimi's sound, let's say the most appropriate, the Boss Digital Delay, DD-3 or the tc electronics Flashback Mini?
Thank you for doing this video! The long version on Voodoo Child is amazing, with the organ being played it reminded me of Deep Purple a little. Great song. I have the Digitech Jimi Hendrix Experience pedal that Eddie Kramer helped get the sound right for. The right speaker helps a ton, I got some Ownhammer IR’s for the G12H 55, it sounds way closer to Jimi’s sound a little bit better than the Greenbacks, which is as close as I can get on some of my multi-effect pedals that I like to use as a amp modeler. Another thing I found that helps a ton with Hendrix’s sound is the strings. Nickel round core, 9-10-13-(or 15)-26-32-38. What you do is get a 9 or 9.5 string to a Standard Hendrix set of 10-13-15-26-32-38, and move the 10 to the B String, and sometimes they would also put the 13 in the G because back in the 1960’s the G came as a wound string. Awesome video again, I have learned so much from your channel!
Thanks for your great feedback and awesome insights 🙏👍 I have yet to try an Ownhammer IR. Once I find the time, I’ll make an IR of my cab/speakers as it is extremely close to Jimi’s sound, fortunately ☺️ The strings play a role and maybe for one of the next videos I’ll put on a 10-38 set or even follow your advice alternatively. The Digitech Pedal is a very cool device. I wonder why they ceased production 🧐 Thanks again my friend ✌️☮️🔥🎸
@@MikelBluni I noticed a huge difference between the sound of the hex core vs the older style round core. Pyramid makes a good set and so does Curt Mangan. I always wondered why I didn't like the sound of new strings, I would keep my hex cores on until they broke. If they didn't break, they were not getting changed. The hex cores sound very bright, and especially on a Strat with single coil pickups. The round core strings have a more mellow, warmer sound, like if you never changed your hex core strings for years. Blew my mind when I tried the round core. There is a UA-camr named Milsap that has done some work in getting a Hendrix tone.
@@JDStone20 Thanks 👍For those interested in trying: „Pyramid Nickel Classics Regular“ are the old style round cores. They have a Hebdrix Set, too: „Pyramid Nickel Classics JHI 010-038“
@@MikelBluni Yeah I have a set of those on my Stratocaster now. Only thing is that you need to make sure you crimp the ends of strings and bend them at a 90* angle so you don't get a dead string. That was one of the reasons strings were switched to hex core.
Pretty good! I would suggest ditching the reverb all together. If you use a tape delay and increase the input gain and the repeats it gives off a similar vibe as reverb but it leaves somewhat of a space. I find it mashes so much better with the gain going into it while preserving the clarity at the same time…
Thanks for your feedback ✌️In this case the reverb was required to replicate the specific room sound. That’s what makes the recorded sound so special 👍🎸☮️
Nice work investigating this tone! I think that you can adjust this type of stereo delay unsig the "haas effect". Changing feedback to 0, time to 30ms and mix 70%-80%, and turn a bit down the reverb.
Thanks 🙏 Where does your setting come from? I can give it a try, but Eddie Kramer clearly states 100ms. Reverb is point on with the 10:48ish mark in the song.
I approximately used your amp settings on my Marshall SV20 . A Hall Reverb on the NUX Atlantic - approximately again , and a Telecaster ( A cheap Trevor Wilkinson Vintage V52MRBS GUITAR ) it does sound very good . Obviously I’m in standard D tuning . I’ve yet to add the delay as I was having too much fun 😂.. Thanks for the tips 👍🏻
I agree you nailed the sound, but I think you should have discussed the amp setting a little more. The volume setting has a huge part in that fuzzy sound.
Love your videos man! What attenuator would you recommend for a 100watt marshall? I own a very old THD hotplate but there must be something better out there. Greetings from Holland! Oh and, which gauge strings you have on your strat tuned in D?
Thanks so much Christiaan ✌️ I use 10-46 most of the time, Jimi used way slighter 🧐 My guitar is tuned down to D for this video, otherwise Eb 🎸Check out the Harley Benton PA-250. Just in case, here’s the affiliate link: thmn.to/thoprod/510412?offid=1&affid=2967
Would the Roger Mayer Axis fuzz 27 model be suited for this setup aswell? I really need something that can fit on my pedalboard with a power supply current.
The 27 is a great Fuzz, but it’s not the original Axis. However, you can come close to the Axis sound and the 27 has an advantage: you can tame the brightness of the original Axis 👍
But what volume setting overall are you using? Id love to get that tone but i play in a 12x12 room (and have a family) that I want to keep the paint on the walls!!!
I use an attenuator 😉 Check my affiliate links in the description or my demo video of my attenuator. Otherwise I couldn’t really play my Plexi at home ✌️🎸
Yes, in this case. Here’s why: The Plate reverb they used came first then Eddie added Delay by manipulating the tape machine at the end of the process chain. I could imagine that when Jimi used the Echoplex (EP2) for delay it was the other way around. Just experiment and see what sounds and feels best for your ✌️🎸
Mikel, So the effects order is Strat Volume rolled down to 4 then to Fuzz Face with Gain turned down to 3 or 5 then Reverb#1 pedal then Echoplex 100mS then to a ROOM Reverb pedal?
@@MikelBluni but what type of reverb is the 1st reverb? Because it goes reverb#1 + echoplex 100mS + ROOM reverb. Hendrix would often use the fuzz face with the fuzz gain turned to 1 to 3 as a Throaty Booster to get that Throaty Fat Tone.
