Audio Interface Vs Mixer For Live Streams - What To Invest In?

- Following my previous Livestream video, I've got one main question that I received from everybody. Which one should you buy? Well, I've decided to make a video to talk about what I've learned after using both the audio interface and the audio mixer for my live streams.

This is such a quality material and information. Thank you for giving your time and effort. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for this. I'm new (ish) to live streaming, and you have helped me choose that a mixer is better for the live (Buddhist) chanting i am doing on my channel. All the best :)
For over 2 years now I've wanted to get an audio interface, but interfaces in my country are overpriced. Now that I want to start streaming, I realize that I need on-the-fly EQ adjustments more, and mixers are a lot cheaper while still providing USB connection and phantom power. Thanks for this great video! You earned a sub. Love your voice by the way :P
Thank you so much :)
Very helpful. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Great explanations
Very honest opinion much appreciated
thank you for making this video. very helpful
Dude !! omg thank you so much for this info. You're a life saver . Thanks you got a new subscriber. Hello all the way from Belize
Great video! So helpful, thank you very much!
YOU'VE HELPED A BUNCH!!!
Great vid as always!
Thank you! Appreciate it!
Thanks bro. God bless you...
Thank you!
Thanks, great info - liked and subscribed 🙂
great video, thank you so much!
This was really helpful thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you so much
thanks for your good explanation...
謝謝你的視頻. Thanks for your videos Su😊👌
love your videos
I do bigo live singing with guitar or with minus one from computer. Mixer MG10XU. I love it. Adjust them depend on song. All you need to do 2 way conversation from phone is Irig and few cable. Use XLR as output and input is the best. Much different.
Very informative.. thanks! 😊
THANKS BRO.
Thanks for the informative video! Hope to catch you at Tipsy Panda sometime soon!
Hardware first. Software later. lol that sounded so cool but great video!
Thank you !! =)
you are such a great guy
Dear Su, great video. Can you please make a video on how to live stream from a smart phone along with a high quality audio from a mixer?
Hey, I made a video on the iRig on my channel. Check it out :)
This answered my most nagging questions. I was thinking to go with a mixer, but if I could make an interface work for my purposes I would rather go with that. As I’m not hip to using a DAW and for my simple purposes generally I can’t, the mixer is the way to go.
I’m with you! I use both my mixer and interface for live-streams nowadays. It’s just versatile to know that you have the hardware with you at any point in the show to save your ass!
@@aochengsu I’m originally a sax player. I’ve used sequencers quite a lot, but studio recording has always been an audio engineer’s job in my experience... until I started playing guitar a year and change ago. So now I’m a born again musician, and part of that process is learning home studio.
Wow, great info....what plug in can I use to get Logic / Focusrite to speak to OBS....very frustrating....seems like it ought to be easy to send a stereo signal straight to OBS? THANKS!
I only use MG10XU as my audio interface but all EQ and Compressor gain is in default so that I can only adjust all settings in DAW only, but I suggest audio interface for using DAW not mixer.
The Rode Bridge Cast is a new device that merges an audio mixer with an interface and it has dedicated hardware channels on the device for mic levels, chat, game and music etc, and it puts it all into one mix you can send to OBS. The Beacn Mix Create is a similar device, but it lacks the EQ features of an interface - it's purely an audio mixer, unless you get the Beacn Mic which has an onboard DSP that is controlled through the Mix Create software which allows you to apply compression, a limiter etc. Currently no option for EQing the sound out. There's also the Yamaha ZG01 which is similar to the Rode Bridge Cast. I'm surprised it has taken these brands this long to create an "all-in-one" audio interface / mixer that allows you to mix your audio channels as well as apply EQs to your sounds output... It's perfect for streamers, particularly video game streamers.
Very imformative! Please help me choose. I am choosing between Mackie DL16S and Soundcraft UI24R (or if you have a better choice you can tell me). I will use it mainly for live performances and live streaming for a full band. (7mic for drums, 3mic for vox, 1mic for guitar, 1mic for bass, 1mic for keys). any suggestion will be appreciated.
Here's some brilliant information.
Have a look at the Steinberg interfaces, I use the UR44C and you don't need a computer. Right off the bat I plug in mics and a keyboard and I immediately have sound coming through the speakers. It has a software that allows you to set it up on your computer and it's set so you can close the software and also shutdown your computer. It has built in effects meaning you don't have to worry about latency. So this is a game changer
Android or apple ??
Apple but you only need a computer or an apple device to set up the interface (Reverbs and EQ, compression etc) and after that you have no need to plug the interface into a computer/iphone/iPad
@@Tsietsithelele the problem is I predominantly use Android. Dspfxmix is only available for apple , mac and windows so I don't think I can use it without laptop. I want to go out and record but carrying the laptop with all other gears is a hassle.. I would really appreciate if u could test it with Android and share if it's possible or not..
@@ashschneizel7358 okay I'll test it out and give you some feedback, there's Cubasis android version so maybe some how the interface works but I'll check it out
@@Tsietsithelele Thanks a lot.. I will be waiting 😊
Thanks for this video but I’m still clueless. I have behringer um2 audio interface. Can use that and plug it to mac and start streaming? 😊
Hi Tom, great video! Very informative. I just subscribed. Do you think it would be possible to output line out from a Zoom H8 directly into my Sony a6300 external mic jack to use for the audio on our live stream? I use an elgato cam link type hdmi capture device to go from the Sony camera to the computer. I was hoping that I would be able to get 4-6 shure mics into the Zoom H8>line out to mic in on Sony a6300>HDMI out of Sony a6300 to capture device and into PC for livestream.
I think that would be greatly possible! You can try it out :)
Question: What if I just use both for streaming? As well as other things such as music production, audio control for videos and gaming.
Is there any mixer that allows you to put a noise gate, sound suppression, etc on your microphone? I use a Rodecaster Pro, but I get ground noise. Thus, I want to see if there are other options available.
Your explanation and video is really great. ❤️From india. I have a question. I bought behringer UMC22. now I want to connect my guitar (along with my effect processor), and one condenser mic & FINALLY I ALSO WANTED TO CONNECT MY MOBILE TO RUN THE BACKING TRACKS. I want to take live zoom online guitar classes. is that possible with this setup. Plz help🙏
Hi Cheng, please help me what to choose between Mackie profx10v3 and yamaha mg10xu? Both for live streaming. :)
How to choose mixer or interface, for Home studio recording and Live Stream. Yamaha or Zoom mixer are the same function?
Nice video and kudos to you. I purchased an iRig 2 duo and I have logic x with Macos .. I'm strugglling with bad latency issues when trying to send output. Any ideas? Keep up the great work.
Hey, is your latency due to your logic?
@@aochengsu Yes I believe so .. (thanks for responding too) When using Logic I get quite bad latency, without using Loic X and going diret through the iRig I dont get the latency but cant get any benefit at all from Logic's FX, plug-ins and eq etc
do you need a driver for your Yamaha mixer? Do you have to use Reastream with it?
Loved the video, but where your kopi tabao hahahahaha!
ALSO WHAT IS UP WITH YOUR OVERKILL NETFLIX SET UP OMG
I am trying to cut down coffee but it seems like now, it's a staple for the video! hahaha! And also, killer netflix setup helps during quarantine!
@@aochengsu Hahahahaha! YES. I guess you could still have it, but not kopi! Heh heh. IT IS AN ESSENTIAL IN YOUR VIDEO NOW. A MUST HAVE! MUST 👏 HAVE 👏
DAM She can SING!
Thank you, my friend! I just bought me an iRig 2 because of your video. I'll soon make my first livestream with it, with the sound of my mixer! :)
Wow thank you so much man! This means a lot. Hope you're having fun with it on your live streams!
Hi Su Awesome Channel!!!
I have the mixer, and want to do live music with it
Is the mixer the better choice?
I mean I want to do Livestream and sing Kareoke style songs,,,, is the mixer best?
i want to go live stream into my phone to sound nice ive bought the behringer umc202hd but no shure what to do ive bought lightning cable to my phone but want to knio a bit more mate thanks from scotland glasgow
I have the same question. Live streaming needs EQ. Anyone can suggest a good video which describes what to do for EQ. I guess Voice meter Banana is meant to do this....
I have a behringerumc22 card and a 4 channel mixer. how can I use both of them or use one for live stream?
Can we Connect DBX 286s To Mixers?
huhu, as a newbie, kinda hard to digest all of these great info you are sharing, but I wanted to ask, what if we only use android phone?
Can you explain.. Peavey 16 channel mixer ?
Hi! I teach classes online and I want to be able to adjust my mic's audio and treble without fiddling with any in computer software. I have an UMC22 interface and I was thinking of buying an affordable mixer for just treble and bass adjustment. Do you think that would be overkill? should I just stick to software? I dont do recording at all and tbh, i wish i just bought a mixer first rather than an audio interface. Thanks!
A mixer is always good investment for the long run :)
If you have a mixer as your interface, and you plug it in to live streaming sites (such as OBS or vMix), would you need to have DAW for it? or can live streaming sites play straight out from mixer?
If you have a mixer you dont need DAW'S. Just send the "headphones output" of the mixer to you cellphone with a trs to trrs converter
Good video, thanks. I have a question for you concerning a problem I am having with using a Yamaha USB mixer to livestream my brother and I playing on Facebook Live. We have a condenser mic in front of us that we sing into and we each play an instrument, he plays the ukulele and I play the bass. The two things we have plugged into the mixer are the mic and the bass. The uke is captured via the mic. When setting the levels for the mix we do that using the headphones plugged into the mixer. Everything sounds OK and balanced except that we need to have the bass sounding lower than what we expect because if not it will be too loud during the livestream. Also, we use the mixer sound levels to insure no clipping and the sound levels sound OK in the headphones but when livestreaming the sound level was quite a bit lower than what we were hearing coming out of the mixer. We are new to mixing and livesteaming. Are these normal issues or should we be doing something else to correct these issues? Thanks for any input you can offer.
Hey man, did you try to push up the master fader and take a look at your streaming software? You will need to make sure that the mixer is sending enough audio to your computer before you stream.
@@aochengsu thanks for the reply. After some more research I have found that there appears to be an inherent low sound level issue with the USB connection on the Yamaha MG10XU. Many others have noticed and complained about this same issue.
Hey thanks for the video. What do you recommend to someone who works with interface and DAW for recording but wants to do a live show/live stream without a computer? Also maybe recording the live show? Would it just be better to have both a an interface and a mixer? Thank you!
NOGA hey thanks for watching. How do you plan to do your live-streams without a computer?
@@aochengsu hey, guess i need a computer for the live stream, but if it was just a live show? i use an sp404 sampler, looper, guitar, bass, vocals, etc, which is why i need all the inputs, and wondering about mixer/interface for that. there are interfaces which can be used without a computer
NOGA i think you should use a mixer for your live shows :) because you will need all the input and if you want to live-stream your show, you should consider having a mixer that has USB output to a computer. Most mixers should have one nowadays. Check out the Zoom L8! I’ve been using that mixer for my live shows
@@aochengsu Awesome thank you for the recommendation!!
NOGA have a good one! See you around
Nice content. But whats best sound quality for stream interface soundcard or mixer ?
I think the question is, how much budget are you willing to set aside in order to achieve the sound quality that you desire.
@@aochengsuı order tc helicon mini xlr mixer. I had no choices you know. What do you think about that mixer before i used to had helicon playacoustic pedals dark matters stuff. And ı was happy with helicon company. I said lets buy helicon mini xlr for streaming. What your think about this mixer
Yamaha MG10XU..Is it a good mixer for a beginner for live streaming ?
For streaming yes.
So much information. Power as always. Wanna be friends? 🤣
Thank you! I would LOVE to be your friend!
@@aochengsu 🥰
I just bought a YAMAHA MG10XU..and my interest is for Song recording and Facebook game live stream.. "sound interface" is recommended for me right? Instead of mixer? :-(
The YAMAHA MG10XU can connect to your computer via USB, so you don't need an audio interface :)
...it should be good enough for demos. Unless you're planning to have a finished product of a song, then definitely an audio interface. It's higher quality, generally.
@@mercedesescobarmusic thank you so much.
Hello! I would like to live stream a workout video, when music is coming from a bluetooth JBL charge 3, and the microphone is, well a couple meters away. In that case, voice is not very good, but accaptable, but the music in the background is awful. Do you think a mixer would solve the music problem? (I would not like to use OBS, or any special software, just would like to solve it with the hardware) Thanks in advance!
How are you streaming the video? Phone?
@@aochengsu I would like to stream with laptop.
Dominik Stuban well, you can always get a nice portable mixer like the Zoom L8 (I’ve made a video on that as well) and when you go Facebook like, just choose audio as your mixer.
gosh idk which one to use for home recording TvT
Hi..m going to do a live on Facebook...what gear i need ? Should i buy a mixer and a mic ? I have no background music playing with that
What will your live stream be about?
@@aochengsu singing songs...no music...just vocals
@@aochengsu R u there ? I really need your advice urgently ... my live is going to happen on this weekend.
@@andysvlogging a mixer would be good because you can adjust your own EQ and add in some reverb for your stream
@@aochengsu Thanks so much for your reply....are Audio interfaces are good for recording ? i was looking at the focusrite
Your live now using mixer or audio interface ? The voice and music really nice
Hey I've put together a list of all my equipment in the description!
ask a freshman's question: what's the easiest way to combine the signals from two Microphones and send over to computer?
Usb Audio Interface
I am a live musician (not studio) I Use the USB port from my laptop as sound output (my background music) to my interface Behringer UMC204hd and from the interface main outs L and R into one of my mixer stereo channel. Note I do not use the inputs on the interface I just plug the cable USB A-male to B-male from the laptop to the interface.
(my mix, guitar, vocal, music is done on the mixer),
Is this a proper way to use an audio interface to get better sound for my music before arriving to the mixer?
Gary Miller well you’re only using your interface as a background music track. So it doesn’t really matter as long as you’re using the mixer to mix.
@@aochengsu Thank you for replying, So if I understand correctly the interface has no use in improving the quality of the music from the laptop USB port. Then should I use the audio interface between the mixer main outs to the interface inputs and interface main outs to the speakers? or maybe I don't need the interface for live events...
Gary Miller well if you’re using the mixer for your live event, please continuing using it and route the speakers directly to the main L and R.
For live events, your mixer should be your final output. If you’re playing music from your laptop, consider using a converter instead. You can look for something that converts your mini jack into XLR. That’ll help :)
Is no one gonna say how noice his hair looks?
