As a matter of fact, hot water freezes quicker than cold water because the water molecules are further apart, and therefore give off their excess energy more rapidly.

I've been to Fairbanks twice, once in the summer and once in the winter and that 1967 winter it did get down to almost 60 below. The flight-line of the Eielson Air Force Base is always illuminated and you could actually see the air sparkling with those ice crystals floating in the air. It gives new meaning to Winter Wonderland.
That was cool...get it? lol I almost replied to one of the comments below, when the woman said she disliked it because it was like watching a three year old playing in a mud puddle. @Charles Gosnell If you must know why I didn't go with my first instinct is because that particular night I was flat out "battle weary" with what all i already have to go through during the day ok? As a lifelong Fairbanks resident, that is very flattering lmao. It’s -30f rn and its not that bad, cuz the air gets so cold that it loses all humidity, which makes the temp feel less extreme. I can go outside for roughly 20 minutes in only 2 light jackets without it getting unbearable. It’s the -20 weather that I can’t stand tbh
Its because the thermal energy fades slower when the water molecules that have thermal energy are together, unlike when they are scattered as they are thrown into the air. Have a grasp of thermodynamics and you will get it ^_^
Hotter molecules together will keep the water warm longer. Since there was no diffusion of colder water to mix it and bring down the temperature, the water could stay warm. The air was probably acting on the surface of the water, which was slowly being cooled as cold air mixed in with the water. When the water was thrown into the air, the hot molecules were no longer acting upon one another to maintain the temperature. The heat was lost thanks to cold air (which is a fluid) rapidly coming into contact with the water. The result is the cloud that forms, the water was cooled so rapidly it condensed and turned into a cloud because the cold air had separated those particles so well (tiny ice droplets now floating away). Another thing to notice is how there are no clouds in the sky. Clouds are a product of moisture, when it’s too cold or too hot clouds cant form. Too hot and the molecules don’t freeze, too cold and the molecules can’t even evaporate to reach the appropriate altitude to become suspended particulate (clouds). Cool stuff.
Do you know how cold it would have to be for that water to freeze that fast? Lol, I can bet that this guy probably wouldn't be outside if the temp was that low.

This is probably a stupid question, but why does the water not freeze when it is inside the cup? Is it because the cup is warm still?
Its because the thermal energy fades slower when the water molecules that have thermal energy are together, unlike when they are scattered as they are thrown into the air.
Have a grasp of thermodynamics and you will get it ^_^
