Hiking the Hills of Chippewa Moraine | Ice Age Trail Center - 02/10/24

- While staying in Eau Claire, we headed over to hike the hills of the Chippewa Moraine. What I didn't know is that the Chippewa Moraine State Natural Area is host to the Ice Age Interpretive Center. The center has multiple displays and exhibits on the wildlife, cultural, and geological features of the area. Anyone interested in touchy feely displays and large amounts of history, needs to visit this center. The Ice Age Trail travels through the area with a few backpacking campsites available for reservation. You can also access the Dry Lake Trail Loop and the Circle Trail Loop from the parking area. Signs along these trails point out geological features such as the moraines, kettle lakes, and erratics. Early settlers in the area logged the forests using the many lakes to easily transport the fallen trees. Evidence of this - joining lakes - is still visible today.

My wife and I did a section hike from the Chippewa-Moraine section all the way to the town of Cornell over 4 days earlier in May. We're planning on doing a section in the Chequamegon near Medford later this fall.
That's on the bucket list - section hiking the entire IAT. It's so beautiful. - bean
