  • We decided that it was time to build the horse feeder but we didn't have much time to spare. We gathered up whatever materials we had on hand and got to work. All in all, it came out great! We're happy that we can check this job off the list.

PS maybe as the weather warms you can take a ride around and do a little trash picking find stuff that can be re-purposed to help in your climb. Why buy when someone else don’t want it anymore! You two are very smart you can make something work! Hugs from and 84 yr old who’s been where you are and done what your doing!

That old wood would make a nice little tack room or tack closet or tack cabinet in the barn for Ashley. Have a good day.
Sometimes I want to give you the " if it was my place" comment, so please forgive me for it. The more I see of your place, the more I like it.

I love that you were able to re-use the boards from the old coop house. Doug, you are so good at on-the-spot projects. Ashley, you are the perfect compliment to Doug's need for perfection on these things! 'Spit and shine' rustic and repurposed are better than brand new on 99% of farm/homestead projects. Save your $$ for where it absolutely must be spent. Looking forward to seeing the children outside enjoying your new home place. Love your little family! Hugs from Fort Payne, Alabama.

Feeder is really nice! You probably already know, you'll notice if the corner location lets one of your equines, probably Tundra, keep the other away from the feeder. If that happens, locating it in the middle of the wall should fix that...

I like the re-use of boards to make this feeder. Good job. Good to know they like it. If you like precision woodworking, watch Unemployed Redneck Hillbilly Creations, he's a retired engineer who makes furniture out of trees he's cut down on his own property, and does beautiful work. Quite an accomplished man, in spite of the title of the channel, which is a joke between him and his wife. He also has a great garden and they do canning videos too. Nice to see Tundra still does photobombs!

You did a great job getting it together for not having much time to get it done. I am a bit of a perfectionist myself so I understand the dissatisfaction but you need to consider its purpose and placement - Ashley is right, it looks rustic and that's how it should look for being in a barn.

I know what you mean, Doug, about throwing something together quickly. I watch a lot of art channels and some of my favorites have a very loose almost sloppy style which I love, they always come out with cool paintings in the end. I try to do it that way and it is just too much work for me! I want everything matchy matchy and symmetrical so although I love their style I just can't do it.
Your feeder looks great, you're never going to learn if you don't try. God Bless you two!

Well done you two. Using wood from the property, great idea, and it looks like the perfect size to feed the horse and the mule.
We are building our retirement home, just got the footings finished for the foundation. By building our homes ourselves, (we do sub-contract plumbing, electrical and sheet rock) this will be our third home and we'll be mortgage free! I love your go with the flow attitude! Things go so much smoother when you don't sweat the small stuff. My husband ( We've been married 44 years this year) is a machinist, so everything he makes out of metal or wood is always perfect. However, occasionally I convince him to see the beauty of imperfection, and the practicality of it as well.
I really enjoy watching your channel. You are so grounded and relatable. All the ❤️and 🍀 in the world to you dear ones!

We used to say, when doing something like that, "It's not furniture." There's a time for perfection and a time to just giterdun. This was a giterdun moment... and you did great. The main thing is that the animals can reach their feed, and that the feed is kept clean. I think it looks great. One thing I'm impressed by is your ability to work out how to plan the pieces, and put it together. Good work.
