Arctic Wildlife
My trip to watch polar bears was organised by Wildfoot Travel and took place in 2023. We set off from London with a short flight to Oslo and then on to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, where I watched barnacle geese under the midnight sun.
On board the M/V Sea Spirit
My home for the next 11 days was a luxury ship as it circumnavigated Spitsbergen. The first stop was New Alesund. Now a research centre, this former mining town is famous for being the starting point of Admundsen's polar expeditions.
Svalbard reindeer
Here I saw Svalbard reindeer, a subspecies of the reindeer found in the rest of the Arctic circle. Shorter and stockier, these animals have thicker coats to survive the - extremely - harsh winters.
Arctic fox
The next landing was Fjortende Julibukta Bay, where I encountered an arctic fox and her cubs.
Seabirds
As we sailed we spotted fin whales and perched on the glaciers thousands of seabirds: kittiwakes, artic terns, skuas and little auks.
Walrus
The next leg of the journey took us to Alkefjellet where the towering, gothic-like cliffs were covered in about 60,000 pairs of Brunnich's guillemots and at Torellneset were literally hundreds of walrus hauled out on the beach. The noise was an experience!
Polar bears
Best of all, of course, were the polar bears and the amazing sight of a female with two cubs.
Antarctic
In 2007, I visited the Antarctic touring the Falcon Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula itself.
Penguins
The penguins were the highlight of this trip and so Volunteer Point, which is the only place that king penguins breed, was a must. Here I also saw Magellanic (also known as Jackass penguins because of the braying sounds they make) and Gentoo penguins and on Saunders Island I saw Rockhopper penguins.. it was brilliant to watch hopping up the cliffs to the colony.
Elephant seals
Saunders was also home to enormous elephant seals and as we sailed to South Georgia we watched whales and albatross and giant petrels followed the boat. At St Andrews Bay there were fur seals and about 300,000 king penguins breeding. The chicks take over a year to reach maturity and often line the edge of the water staying out of the way of the hustle and bustle
Antarctic Peninsula
The closer we got to the South Pole, the colder and icier it got. Here I saw skuas and a colony of Adelie penguins and Macaroni penguins, which were like Rockhoppers on speed!

One thing I dislike about Norway is that it still allows hunting of Minke Whales for meat consumption.Norwegians taste for whale meat is in decline but they export a lot to Japan.
Truly fantastic footage Robert. Some fantastic live footage and some spectacular still shots. I’m so jealous. Both looked like fantastic trips.
Too many beautiful species in this video to pic one as my favourite although I’ve always wondered how a penguin got named after a type of Italian pasta.🤷😂
Many thanks!
Творец Бог создает животные в земле. Красивые животные.
I'll presume you had your personal guide on Svalbard? Because normally you are not allowed to leave the group of tourists because of the danger of Polar Bears! But Svalbard, always outstanding.
I’d work for you for free as long as you can take me with you to these places! Absolutely breathtaking.
Got it. My birth month and day are the same as William's Sir. Prince of Wales.🙏
VERRY BEAUTIFUL FILM, I THINK I DID NOT DO EVERYTHING YESTERDAY. THE PINGUÏNS ARE GREAT, WITH SO MANY AND IN DIFFERENT TYPES LIVING TOGETHER. THANK YOU Mr FULLER FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL AND INTERESTING FILM. I only ask myself, There is not so much ice and snow, anymore; What is that doing with the animals, please 💙💙💙💦🙏🐳🌹🌿🌾
Hi Robert. A very interesting film to me personallyand very well shot. I too travelled with Poseidon on the MV Sea Spirit last year. A good sized ship with a high standard on board. I took their March trip from Ushaia back to Buenos Aires and came back with many many images (and memories). Even managed to win the 'Animals' award prize on the stock image website Unsplash where I post a number of free to use images. Now for this year I have booked their Svalbard circuit in July and will take along my daughter. On gear I'm a Sony user and took the 100-400 and 600 f4 GM lenses. Plan to do the same this year as well. May also try a wide angle as well. Last year I took my small drone but there was not an opportunity to fly, maybe this year. If you have any specific advice for that trip I would be very pleased to hear it.Regards Bob Brewer
Helo tuyệt vời quá ❤❤❤
What is the name of the birds at 11:34 ? I really find them as one of the most remarkably adaptable birds I have ever seen. I believe I found a new favorite for my bird favorite list.
Little Auks. Also known as Dovekie.
@@kahanuermeyas-tulu4056 Thank you.
Robert my question is do you have to wear super warm clothing I mean is it is it freezing and Antarctic and the arctic. Also would I be able to bring my 13 year old son with me. I recently joined your travel club I'm so excited that I found it I loved your little webinar and the scenery just makes me cry. Also Robert you're a very handsome man.
