Engraving Brass Dogtags with a Diamond Tip Drag Tool -

  • Drag engraving can be a really easy and forgiving way to mark metals, ceramics, paint, etc. I'll dissect the variables in the process and make some dog tags while I'm at it.
    Diamond Drag Engraving Tool: I would post a link, but it seems Benchtop Precision has gone belly up.
    I used the default 120 degree tip.

    Great video dude, I make award plates like this at work all the time. I found the 90 to leave a slight burr to the touch but a120 tip won’t if you ever want to try that out. Also aside from this project I think you would benefit GREATLY from a desktop microscope. You can inspect your finished work like the engraved tags plus look for damage on your end mills, it’s helped out immensely in my shop, cheers.

    Once again me Winston great, must ask a question since it's a drag bit do you have any rotation from your spindle or is your spindle off and you're just dragging it thanks ahead of time

    What is an "inch"? Someone in the office tells me it is a medieval measurement. Someone else says it was mentioned in the Old Testament.

    Thanks for this!!! You just saved me lots of time fiddling around with Fusion 360. I am just starting to use a diamond drag bit on copper to make plates for intaglio printmaking. The lines part is working great (the tool throws a wonderful burr which holds a lot of ink, like drypoint etching, and it compensates in a lovely way for the variation in z axis, which with an end mill was a killer on my Snapmaker 2.0 even after facing the spoil board ). But I was just starting to experiment with fill, so thanks! BTW if you happen to know of anybody else doing this (printmaking art stuff CNC on copper or whatever) I would very much appreciate a pointer.

    The advantage of doing your logo with different angles is that the light highlights the different parts err... differently. I did one a few weeks ago and was able to achieve a certain level of "gray scale" with different density and angles. instagram.com/p/Bg_zd57Dd5g/?taken-by=runcnctv

    is the cut deep enough that the engraving does not wear away ?

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  Рік тому

      Drag engraving is basically just a deep scratch. Only a couple thousandths of an inch deep. If you drop it in your pocket with keys, it will probably stand out less and less over time. Rotary engraving would be what you need for something more durable.

    Are there any requirements your CNC frame has to meet to be able to use this tool? I'm going to be making a CNC machine from scratch and don't know what kind of motors to get or how to make sure the CNC is sturdy enough.

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  4 роки тому

      It only needs to be able to handle a couple pounds of force to use a spring loaded tool. But the machine should be solid to begin with, otherwise flex and vibration will affect every other aspect of the machine, like accuracy.

  • @StephensCustomModels

    Wow, you were able to cut those tags our very close to one-another. I had no idea the Shapeoko could cut with that accuracy. I had been leaning towards the Nomad 883 for cutting 1:50 scale model parts, but it seems the Shapeoko may me capable of similar tolerances. For example, if I were to cut 1mm wide shapes into ~1.5mm brass sheet, could the Shapeoko handle it?

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  4 роки тому +1

      The Shapeoko lacks the outright rigidity of the Nomad, but if you go slow and steady there's no reason it can't hit similar precision. We tell people to expect a ball part accuracy of 0.003" on the Nomad, and 0.005" on the Shapeoko.

    • @StephensCustomModels
      @StephensCustomModels 4 роки тому

      @@WinstonMakes Outstanding, thanks for the fast reply! Looks like I need to reevaluate the Shapeoko for my needs. I'm guessing you're able the control the router spindle RPMs from your computer? Or, are you required to manually change it the the router?

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  4 роки тому

      Manual change only. Some people add on a speed controller like SuperPID, but that requires some invasive router surgery.

    I'm attempting this with my diamond drag tool modeled in Fusion as a chamfer mill. When I do the parallel toolpath, Fusion throws an error, "Invalid tool type for milling."

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  5 років тому

      So then don't use it as a chamfer mill. Open your tool library, filter by operations, and see what Fusion will allow for a Parallel op. There's like 3 or 4 potential options. Tapered endmill might work.

    • @secretspy711
      @secretspy711 5 років тому

      @@WinstonMakes I did. I was just alerting you and other viewers to the fact that in the video you say to use a chamfer mill, and that won't work. Fusion ought to have a dedicated tool type for this.

    Great video, how did you learn to use fusion 360 so well? What's the best way for a total beginner to learn fusion 360? I want to use it to design wood furniture to cut out using my xcarve.

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  6 років тому +4

      I went to school for engineering, and in doing so picked up Creo and Solidworks. Then in the course of my job, I did a rotation at a facility that used Inventor. From that foundation, I figured out Fusion as I went (with a bunch of visits to Lars Christensen's channel).
      Lars and Autodesk's own tutorials are a good foundation. There are two stages of fusion familiarity in my opinion:
      1) Understanding the fundamentals of CAD, being able to sketch and extrude. Same principles as Sketchup, just different interface.
      2) Being comfortable enough to poke around and learn through trial and error. I didn't know how to make the engraving toolpaths when I started this project. I suspected it was possible, but I had to dig through the menus to find the right options. Fusion can be overwhelming, but focus on the basic tools, and add more to your repertoire as you need them.

    Hi Winston - Thanks for all the great videos
    CNC can do extraordinary things with 5 axis milling or engraving a picture
    Please can you produce some pictures with the CNC machine . . .
    Ideally CNC should perform tasks which a skilled person would find very difficult
    Just cutting out shapes could be performed with a router and pantograph
    I agree CNC is many times faster than a skilled person

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting 6 років тому

      I would say that the purpose of a CNC is to do repetitive tasks that a skilled person or more importantly a creative person would find mundane. For one off items, I am not certain that a skilled person couldn't do it as quickly. But if you want 100 engraved dog tags. Who would enjoy that and how much would it cost?
