Added a new Apple CarPlay ISO Double Din stereo to my nephew & son's VW Golfs Mark 5. Didn't realise there was an issue with these older Golf's & the Canbus and a battery drain led to a car that wouldn't start. After a quick search on UA-cam I found this fantastic video and I was easily able to make a couple of these fuse rigs which completely solved the problem. It was also a lot easier than having to take out the stereo, cutting into the stereo wiring harness and running a wire behind the dashboard & across to the cars interior fusebox to hook up to a switched live fuse. So thanks a million for a very useful and well explained video.
Very glad it helped, thank you very much for support...
Good video, this helped me on Jetta MK5 track down why my battery was drained. it was not Radio. it was boot door when opened and shut without pressing on car alarm remote to lock it.
Terrific video. I installed the RCD330 unit (and steering controls adaptor plug) in a 2006 GTI and had the dreaded battery drain issue. The fuse box in the GTI is a different layout than the one in this video. I used the (open slot) top pin in F27 and the right pin in F19 for my connections. Everything works perfectly with zero battery drain now. Thank you ARC Garage.
Glad the video helped, thank you very much for support...
I'm having the exact same issue on my 2006 GTI with the RCD330 + steering controls adaptor plug. Really happy to find your comment! Don't know if you will see this as it is 2yrs since you posted, but I'm curious how long it took for your battery to drain? I have been using my setup for about 6 months with no issues until today
@@ivarksendal6273 Six months is a long time for an issue to suddenly develop. Check the battery and charging system. May not be the RCD330 unit.
Does your radio ask every time for code when you turn on the ignition with the fuse box mod?
Best video for this kind of problem. I'm not an electrician but after seeing this video I was able to replicate the steps that ARC Garage dude did here :D . @ARC Garage many thanks for the video it was very useful!
No problem, glad it helped...
Ive been struggling to figure out the issue...had to replace mt alternator then battery and then i realised its the radio but i didn't know the fuse circuit terminals......legendary video ❤️💪
Glad I could help
Perfect Video for me
I have the same car with the same fuse box layout, also have the same radio and the same battery drain fault from fuse 24. this saved me hours, nice one thanks
Glad it helped
Thank you for this fix.
Easy to follow instructions.
Glad it helped

@@arcgarage but after a few times i think 7 times i have to reenter the code off the radio again. and it doesnt have mamory on cd and media only on Radio. maybe becouse i cut out the red wire from te radio and only left the yellow one
Yes, but if you are unsure when it comes to connecting wires, take your car to professional, you might do more harm than good...
Hello what is the best thickness wire to use ?
Absolute legend mate. Cheers for the info ❤
Glad it helped
Great work and explanation! Thank you! No canbus changes needed?
No problem, no need to mess with canbus...
easy to solve this problem. thank you
Glad to hear that
What are those 2 wires wrapped around the relay
Just checking, but should this also work with a 2005.5/2006 Jetta with aftermarket radio? Thank you
Not 100% sure, but I think it should...
Is this method save ? Or can something bad happened if I would put it in the wrong slots of the fuse box
Good info, my golf radio doesn't turn off with ignition??
What do you mean?
@@arcgarage if I turn ignition off, my radio stays on n drains battery 🤕🙄not sure y??
@@arcgarage does the ignition on a mk5 golf have to be on for the radio to on??? If not why is my ignition off,, yet my radio still plays🙄👍🙏
@@alsstewart8583 After I've done this, ignition has to be on for radio to be on. But before I did this, ignition did not have to be on...
@@arcgarage I will try bypass wires via fuse box like in video and hope this works 👍🙏👌
Hi, great tutorial. I have the same car and problem with the radio and I have made the fuse jumper lead exactly as you have shown. But how do I do the actual multimetre test to see which side of the fuse slots are positive/negative? Where do I put the other multimetre rod assuming that one goes in the side of the fuse slot that you are testing? Many thanks for your help.
The other one goes to negative battery terminal, but if you are unsure of what exactly are you testing you should take your car to the shop
@@arcgarage Brilliant, thought as much. Many thanks for the swift replay - greatly appreciated.
@@arcgarage Followed your advice and all worked perfectly, found the positive and negative fuse slots and now have a working radio again which cuts off dead when I turn off the ignition, saving my battery from an unwanted drain. Thanks again!
@@tobesnoble2516 No problem, thank you for support...
Bravo brò.. ok funzionante su rcd 310 .... 100% grazie 💯👍👋 💯💯
Does this works on Jetta Mk5?
Hi, thank you for the video! Does it change if I pick one of the three slots 27,28 or 29?? I have the three of them free. And, have you had any problems or felt something different in the car after this modification? Thank you,
Hi, no problem. I did this on my friends car, and he doesn't have any issues with it. Not sure about other slots, you have to test them, and make sure they get power when the key is on...
@@arcgarage and they must not be powered when the key is off right? Cause I just did the test and the three of them are powered even when the key is off :( so it does not work for me
Howsit arc i got a problem i have a golf 5 gti dsg nd my radio is draining my battery how do i make with fuse wire
Hi 👋🏼
Where can I buy these cables and fuses? It is also suitable for a
golf 5 2004?
Thanks
Greeting I have a problem with the Golf 5 1.6mpi (BSE) 2007. Something is draining the battery. When I pull out 2 fuse (fuse at engine). I found that fuse for (Steering column electronics control unit) or (Steering column function control module) Please help
If the battery does not drain without that fuse, you got issue with steering column function control module... Did you do the proper battery drain test?
@@arcgarage I put the unimer at 20mA. Placed on the terminal and the battery and waited 30 minutes. The unimer read 0.20. When I remove fuse number 2 it drops to 0.06.
Then that's where your issue is...
some say in forums that its not recommended, why ?
both sides of my fuse slot is providing 12v even when the ignition is off
Fantastic thanks
Why have you pput that wire on 458 relay? In order to reduce Heat? I have the same problem with code p2540. How do you make that thing with the wires on 458 relay actually works? Thanks in advance
I have a 2007 Jetta. I used this method and it fixed the battery drain. However, now clock time is stuck and lose station memory.
You didn't connect it properly, you shouldn't be losing station memory
Hi great video. Would this work with all android systems or a rcd 330 on my 06 gti
It should
Ok cheers, thanks for the fast reply 👍🏽
great tips thanks
You bet!
Would this same process work with rcd510?
Not sure
Yes, i just did it to my car. Mk5 with rcd510 from a scirocco. The only problem i that you manually need to press the radio power button for it to turn on the screen, but the buttons etc lights up no problem
I have 1.6 fsi model and fuse box is different, I dont have automatic transmission fuse. Can you help which one to use in my car?
Use any other one which isn't used, but gets the power when you turn the key...
I dont need to draw a wire from my android radio to this fuse connection?
No, the wire is already there...
Can the fuse wire be bought online, or can you only make it yourself?
Not sure, I think you have to make it yourself...
this maybe is good for non android stereos, but what about the android stereos, that if you cut the power like you did, always on starting the car will boot like never sterted before, taking like 2 min until the stereo is ready to roll???
If you wire it right it won't do that...
How do I make the wire
Hello, it doesn't drain my battery, but it doesn't remember any saved radio station or time
You have to switch some cables
I have golf v 2004 fsi which Is the numbers of fuse?
F19 for stereo and f28 for 12v ?
Its exact??
Thanks
I've checked my AutoData, and fuse 19 is for stereo, F28 is for automatic transmission, I think it is the same one I used...
i have mounted a chinese android radio. the radio has a canbus. if i turn the key to position 1 the radio turns on and if i turn off the car the radio turns off. my problem is that even if it turns on and off normally anyway I unload the battery. if I do as you did I should be okay ??
Yes, but make sure you wire everything properly...
Ok thanks
Can I use fuse adapter?
I don't see why not...
Does the radio now remembers all stations and settings?
Yes
What is the name of the fuse cable called? I am trying to buy online
I made it myself...
@@arcgarage ok, I have Fabia, radio fuse is inside car :(
So i have a vw jetta mk5 automatic transmission Any suggestions? I only have one open fuse spot and it’s vacant
and also how would i know if a fuse works if the car is running, you never explained that.
Test it using multi-meter, and if you don't have any free fuse slots, use a piggyback fuse...
@@arcgarage both sides of the fuse are coming up with current being drawn on them. I thought only one side was supposed have current drawn on them while the other side didn’t
@@michaelshogbonyo3676 If you remove the fuse only one side should have voltage
i don’t understand how i’m supposed to use the piggyback fuse.
Hey man, i have the same problem but with the radio from aliexpress.
What would happen if I connected that self made fuse to both 12v slots?xD
You would cause a short, and possibly cause more serious damage...
@@arcgarage How exacly can I check which side has 12v without putting in the fuse? I can't find a video/tutorial on how to do it with an empty fuse slot :(

I have a different fuze box diagram and cannot locate a non-power/key out open fuze or piggy bank fuze. Is there any typical fuze type that is off unless the key is in like wiper blades, engine control, abs control unit. etc.?
Yes, but you have to test for it...

turns out mine was a radio i got off amazon
