I love oysters and they look delicious. I use to go every Saturday afternoon with friends some years back to eat at least two dozen and have 5-6 beers at this place Snockey's in South Philadelphia. Made me appreciate all the hard work that happened before it went on my plate. Squeeze some lemon, a dash of Tabasco and slurp them bad boys down.

It's California. When I was in college my parents moved to SoCal. I remember coming home for christmas from the midwest and I was in shorts and everyone there was in parkas (it was in the 50s and 60s). California has almost no seasonality to the weather so people there are hyper sensitive to very small variations in temps.

An oyster vendor friend of mine explained that oyster happy hour deals, etc are often bought already shucked and they simply serve them up on shells they've kept.

Used to work at a steak and lobster restaraunt before covid shut everything down. Every Tuesday and Thursday we got our seafood shipments (lobster, salmon, Lincod, sablefish) and the oysters. The general public new when we got out shipments for the week so Tuesday and Thursday were always our busy days. I worked night shift so usually from 5pm-close(12:30). I did everything around the kitchen from dish to steaks to salads. The BAIN of my existence was the oyster bar on salads. First day working it I tried my first oyster and still have ptsd about the feeling of a cold chunky snotrocket stuck in my throat, but thats besides the point. On the busy days we would not shuck under 800 oysters, theres no worse feeling than having a bill for 60, and then dozens upon dozens upon dozens of them com in on top of it. This video was a hard throwback for me. Ps, if you're gonna fuck with oysters, cook em! (Oyster Rockefeller is actually amazing)

San Francisco Bay used to be the free food bank for natives. "Shellmound street" in Emeryville is named for the mounds of shells that were piled up by the wetland shoreline.... hungry natives just had to walk down to the shore line and scoop out there meal.

My grandfather is an oyster lover and always knows a guy to get oysters from every occasion (we live in Illinois) first time I shucked one I was eight and cut myself good times good times. And we would go oyster hunting in Georgia every few years and bring some home and empty oyster shells make great ashtrays

You need to start buying farmed oysters. Oysters chemically filter water, and since you over-catch them, they can't sustain the water quality

40 racks, about 800 per rack. Anywhere between 35,000 and 38,000? Am I the only one wondering if that adds up?

Copied and pasted, but wanted to share what I read: “ the capacity to feel pain and suffer, frequently is the main reason people “go vegetarian or vegan.” In his essay, Cox writes, “Moreover, since oysters don't have a central nervous system, they're unlikely to experience pain in a way resembling ours-unlike a pig or a herring or even a lobster”
