  • In this video I've used a flickering LED and a piece of fibre optic cable to give my old guard's vans a rather attractive rear red flickering light. Quite easy to do and as it's battery powered there's no need to worry about pick ups from the track so can be used on DCC and DC layouts. Here's a list of the bits I've used, I'm not endorsing any of these suppliers merely identifying where you can buy the bits you need:
    CR2032 3V lithium batteries: tinyurl.com/hy...
    CR2032 battery holders: tinyurl.com/hl...
On / Off dip switches: tinyurl.com/jz...
    1mm fibre optic cable: tinyurl.com/hl...
    5mm flickering LEDs: tinyurl.com/jj...
    4mm scale lamps: tinyurl.com/hz...
I also needed the use of:
    Soldering iron, solder, flux, wire
    Superglue / UHU glue
Dremel tool to cut the holes in the floor of the van and drill the holes in the ends of the LEDs
Hand push drill to drill the holes in the floor of the van and through the end of the van walls
    1mm drill
    Enjoy!

Ingenious. Nice idea. "Glued two bolts"? I saw two nuts.

if you want to hide the optic fibre on the verandah, you could always stand a guard over it looking back

Obscure the fibre optic in the lobby with a guardsman if it's a bother.

Excellent “how to” Paul, very easy to follow. I did like your idea of using a soldering iron to dome the fibre, I use a candle to dome my fibre, your idea is much better….Simon

Thanks Simon, afraid it's not my idea, just borrowed from someone else ;)

Great how to.....Would it not be easier to shroud the LED with black heat shrink tubing !!

Hi Paul. Ingenious solution. Is there a solution for N gauge rolling stock?
