Can Nylon Be A Better Fabric Than Cashmere?

- In this video series I interview different fashion designers to discuss what high quality fabrics, construction and garment quality really is. I wanted to make this series because luxury fashion is on the rise but I think these brands have been getting away with selling subpar products because consumers are not educated on what quality they should be expecting after buying an expensive clothing item, bag, pair of shoes & more.
In this episode I interview Traiceline Pratt, a Central Saint Martins MA womenswear design student. He specialises in outerwear and I wanted to pick his brain about misconceptions drawn around fabrics regularly used in outerwear like polyester and nylon. Clothing quality comes in a wide range of quality levels, even with use of the same fabric.

1. Fit for purpose
2. Construction needs to be on point
3. Fabric composition that is being used to make the garment.
4. Trimmings are firmly placed in the garment
I think my question would be, what does “on point construction” look like on various garments. What does it look like on jeans vs a blouse vs an overcoat vs a cocktail dress, etc.
@@royceharvey5894 Top Stitching needs to be consistent straight, construction finishings needs to be consistent (depending on the garment) - hiding of the interfacing - overall appearance of the garment needs to look good.
Love this series.
Would be great if you did a video on fabric grades.
Would love to see a value by brand breakdown. Let’s see the quality-to-value ratio of George vs Balenciaga.
This a great topic. I often think, should polyester garments cost as much as silk? Or should canvas bags cost more than leather bags? It’s good to hear both sides of an argument. Maybe it truly does depend on what the garment is made for, and the quality of construction.
I think the conversation of quality is a really difficult conversation to have because of the different use cases for each fabric. I think the best test really is durability - regardless of the fabric if it lasts 15+ years then it is clearly a quality garment.
I have nike polyester shirts that i've worn and washed over 1000 times and they are good as new. Meanwhile, I have also had cheap leather boots that peeled after just a year.
@@FashionRoadmangreat answer, quality = timeless, does it last (physically does the garment keep up)
This is such a nice, well thought out series. I like that you are interviewing people in different aspects/roles of the fashion industry... It dan definitely be a wake up call for people. Kudos to you!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it
I'm well aware of the different grades of polyester. However, comparing any grade of polyester to cashmere is absurd.
I love this!
Great video!
How could he say cashmere is not a far more better textile then nylon and polyester? A few of his analogies were flawed in content and context. Unfortunately it seems he has not fully grasp the concept of "Luxury".
Fabrics have different properties, you won't climb a mountain wearing cashmere in extreme weather conditions because you put yourself at unnecessary risk of health issues. There are luxury Nylon fabrics that are military grade same way there are super luxury cashmere fabrics. Cashmere can't objectively be better than Nylon or Polyester because the question becomes - what is the fabric being used for?
Cashmere is a luxury fabric and it’s not subjective, I studied BA textiles at CSM and Nylon is not a high grade fabric choice.
Yes, synthetics shoupd only reserve for extreme condition, military, scientist, you name it. But for majority of people who don't need that performance? Natural is always the better choice for them. And durable long lasting natural fabrics are better for environtment, washing synthetics release microplastics. But for greedy corporates? Synthetics are cheaper.
I wonder when part 4 will come out
