the wolves could literally sense death from a mile away.
now i can really understand ancient religions that assigned divine qualities to animals like this...
I mean Why is this a surprise dogs can sense cancer, seizures , and death even cats sense death , crows will follow you if you seem hurt and weak just to eat you easy food.
The wolves got a message from Almighty God, received it and ran in the direction where they were asked to go. Otherwise, the senses don't work from a mile away. He provides for everyone, for those who believe and even those who don't!

Is this a TierZoo reference?!
Interesting hunting strategy, waiting for something to die on its own...
Saving energy
Makes sense, why risk injuries when your nose tells you to wait a bit.
Inexperienced reporter 😂😂😂+commentator Doesn't even know what he's doing. Can't beat a professional and ACTUAL scientist/animal behaviorist i guess.
Reginald Lovely more likely is that they could tell that the bull was weak as it was very far behind the rest of the herd and the herd normally sticks together
Watch a komodo dragon hunt..
I'm loving all this wolf footage, so beautifully shot too. Them knowing that bull was on it's death bed is all about smell, look no further than dogs trained to warn people of things like oncoming seizures before they even know and Oscar the cat who lived in a nursing homes and knew hours before that certain patients were going to die.
When my dad died, he was in bed at home and my mom was in the kitchen cooking breakfast. My dad was 63 and only had the flu. This was 3 years before the Covid-19 scare. Anyway my parents hound dog Jo was in the back yard when according to my mom he started to bark like crazy and wouldn’t stop. She said the sound of his barking was different because she thought it was a different dog. She looked outside and only saw Jo and he was barking at my parent’s bedroom window in a panic state. My mom went to check on my dad and saw that he wasn’t breathing. She called 911 and the ambulance came and got him to the hospital. They couldn’t save him and he died from respiratory failure from the flu he had.
Our dog knew he was gone when it happened and even barked to tell my mom.
Thats so true.. when we were at the hospital attending to dad who died next morning... my dog sensed his dad was not gonna return and quite mysteriously injured herself with a head injury... died shortly before my dad did..
God has given them such a beatifull sense of smell, nature is good and so is God.

It’s pretty interesting to know wolves can sense when an animal is in distress or old and dying. They do the same thing when hunting herds of elk, they instinctively know which one in the group is the weakest or ill and vulnerable.
Sort of reminds me of how dogs can often sense if something is wrong with their owners emotionally or even physically or medically-like how a lot of them have been able to tell beforehand if someone was about to have a stroke or heart attack. There are even dogs that are trained and used to sniff out cancer cells in people. It’s widely believed that dogs can literally smell a person’a DNA, and distinguish how healthy an individual is.
It also seemed like they were doing a kind jester by letting his friend leave and waiting for him to pass. I think they knew that it was happening and that a fight would be a waste of energy, and the bull knew they wouldn’t hurt his friends if he let them eat him. Could be wrong tho
@@Hans-yo2cq Considering wolves are far smarter than domestic dogs which have been observed to show behaviour like you mentioned I think you may well be right.
It's more emotional than instinctual.
@@alankaboot29 Don't be ridiculous, the wolves can smell approaching death. Death has a strong smell.

Yeah - U missed the main part 🤦♂️
I saw something similar in a different documentary, i think it was called "Wolf battlefield". a pack sniffed some old tooth rot of some leaves and was able to track the scent, which lead them to a very old, dying moose. They waited for the moose to collapse and die, then ate it. The moose was miles away. it was amazing.
What a great documentary maker! He sees wolves acting in a strange unexplainable way, so instead of setting up cameras to make sure to capture it fully, he decides to leave and return in the morning 🤦♀️🤦♀️
I know right lol
Maybe due to TV ethics they won't show the footage.
The helicopter he was filming from was running out of fuel. If you watch the making of Frozen Planet, you'll understand the filming restrictions of working in Wood Buffalo National Park
lol he obviously shot it for the wolves but couldn't let us know that

No sir. I'll do it first thing tomorrow morning
“Alright it’s getting good... ima head out”
The bull was most likely emitting the smell of sickness and death.
The wolves picked up on it from miles away as they have extremely strong smell sensors.
Wolves are intelligent enough to wait until the sickness, old age or an injury weaken an animal enough to reduce potential risk of injury for themselves.
no way they can smell anything even dying at a mile while chasing a pack of buffaloo with dust and ding everywhere
Rayer Scarpensael wydm that’s exactly what a wolfs nose is supposed to do, they can smell up to 1.75 miles away and hear like 6 miles in the forest and 10 in open fields, they probably already smelt him before the hunt and was looking for him didn’t spot/smell him again till sometime during the chase and waited for him to die
@@rayerscarpensael2300 - If you hunt for a living you get surprisingly good at it.
Think of a rotting tooth in a human. You can smell that in a person if they get close enough, no matter what is going on around you.
This is how these wolves smelled rotting sickness on the bull from far away.
A wolf's sense of smell and the ability to decode the meaning of each smell, is almost infinitely better than ours.

Atleast David Attenborough doesn't leave in the middle of a documentary to come back in the morning lol
The endurance of these animals is so incredible! I'm so glad that they got to eat after many failed hunts, the power of the pack is amazing!
the beautiful part is, to read all the comments and enjoy the humour.

2:55 is a stunning scene.
“You just can’t wait for me to die, can you?!”
But they did wait.
They're so majestic
Whoa. Wait. Hold on. How did that wolf know that old bull was sick from that far? That is insane. I don’t think you people realize how crazy that is. And then they just waited for it to die.
Edit: Holy 💩! Thank you for the likes. You guys are awesome!
Some dogs can smell cancer in humans so it's possible that the wolves detected the smell of illness in the buffalo, even from a distance away.
The buffaloes from the other herd snitched on him.
@@auntiealias957 pretty much all dogs can smell cancer, but training them to let us know is a different story
They have a really strong nose, much stronger than a dog so they definitely sensed the bull was sick. I've been to a wolf sanctuary when the wolves started howling moments after one of the wolves in a different enclosure died
@@TWINSNAKE47 Wow. If the wind was blowing in the right direction, it would be pretty easy for wolves to pick up the scent.

It's always good to see a good wolf video, especially when the photographer is so good he's also fantastic
Very very smart, they are in tune with the world on a completely different level than humans! Good for them, and awesome footage!
Experienced predators can always tell when something is wrong with an old animal. It seems the alpha male wolf Storm is one of those predators, judging from the way he raced past the bison herd in hot pursuit of the elderly bull. The fact that the bull was away from the protection of its herd was a significant factor in telling Storm that his prey was not far off. It's also likely that a dying animal gives off a particular scent that a seasoned hunter like Storm can pick up.
Wolves 🐺 are one of the most smartest intellectual creatures in the Animal Kingdom. And they howl to communicate.
What a presentation...World best documentary maker... One of the best documentary session i have seen ever... Brilliant work... All the best... God bless you
My guess is that these wolves constantly harassed this sick and old bison to prevent him from drinking any water, causing the latter to eventually succumb to dehydration.
in one night?
No they smell the sickness on him just like u have service dogs that know when a person is about to have a seizure
That’s so fascinating that the wolves could sense that a Bull was going to die(if that what had happened)I know some animals can sense if another animal is sick.
This is why wolves are my favorite animals! Fantastic!!!

I have been loving this wolf series! Amazing animals
Wolves are master of the stalkers
They are master of team work. Jaguars take ambush spot
You’ve obviously never been to japan
This is a great series, following a family of wolves. I really enjoy this.
Wolf instincts must be incredibly sophisticated to sense that old bulls state of health.
I often think us humans ignore a lot of our own natural intuition in modern society. Would probably make the world s better place if we listened to it more!
How did the wolves know the bison was old
The same way they can tell if a bison or other prey is young, perhaps by movement, activity and body structure, still though, this video proves that some animals are more than just blood gushing predators, but perceptive in their own way.
how long the balls are hanging....science
Smell, movement, look - basically their instinct tells them. They're made to sort out and finish the old, weak and sick.
That's the balance of nature. Nothing is wasted and if predators don't have to take a risk, they won't.
OMG what a weird question, of course they asked him. Gee
Same way you can tell someone's dog is old, just look at it
Garry, shouldn't have came back next day, do your job right.
The point that the wolves waited for the bull to die shows another face of wilderness!
The Bulls were like
*What up fellow mammal*
Wolves are very sophisticated animals. Good video. Thank you.
A predator such as a wolf has a super-power-like instinct for weakness. It is part of the survival mechanism and that is why they usually go for the calves etc. So there were many signs they perceived that the old buffalo was weak. Signs that we wouldn't have a clue about yet to a predator canine that has survived for millions of years is as second nature as you being able to scratch your nose. The first sign was two lone buffalo away from the herd. There's your first sign they caught onto. Then when close and sensing that the buffalo wasn't interested or bothered being able to run away, there's another sign. Dogs are body language experts and if it is body language and behavior that promises a meal they are going to be 10 times more perceptive of the situation. Another brilliant skill a predator has is anticipation and instant anticipatory calculations. They need to be able to predict the trajectory of what they are chasing. With my dogs, I used to throw a ball up on a roof at an angle and as soon as it left my hand they would run a few yards into position and the ball would literally bounce off the roof directly into their mouths. Was amazing to watch. Another one of my dogs could tell the instant the ball left my hand whether it was going to go over the roof or not. She was either on her way to the other side of the building or not and was right 9 times out of 10. Millions of years of predatory skill. It is a superpower we will never fully understand the powers of.
They analyse prey and feel there are weak by there tempo, they are smarter than we think they are.
They know what they do. Fantastic
It's like the wolves are the grim reaper waiting for death to arrive
The wolves had seen his medical report
(Late at night)
BBC crew spots the old buffalo and shoots it:;
Meanwhile viewers: whoah ..great twist
Those wolves have better teamwork than the LAKERS.
I love watching them on a hunt and other canids species that have packs, it awesome how they have different tactics and strategies and they are calculating and each one knows where and what they need to do. Watching they slipping a herd up and you can see that they are looking for that unhealthy or injury one to get, I hate seeing them in a pack of a couple of wolves it’s hard for them to be successful at catching their prey and making them at a higher and more at risk of targeting livestock
I thought I could not love wolves any MORE ...
Til now
