    Very informative I bought an oil free pump in August 2020 and HR sent me a scroll pump. It ended up failing 6 weeks out of warranty! I now have a Premier pump and love it, oil changes are easy. At the time of my 5 month back and forth with HR trying to figure out why I was getting a vacuum error, I asked my tech "Which pump gets more trouble calls, oil free, or oil pump?" His answer, oil free. In retrospect, my oil free pump started throwing "unable to achieve vacuum error" probably 9 months after purchase but would always resolve by load being restarted, my husband said it was a slow leak...beware!! Note: Our troubleshooting took longer than needed to and this wasn't due to HR, it was due to us. Listen to Phil, do not buy an oil free pump.

    I was just checking out an oil free pump I purchased on Ebay. I was testing it and haven't attempted to run a load in it. I'll return it.

    I wish I would have known the scroll pump is vulnerable to acidic vapor. I also believe the HR FD vacuum hose suction allows fine food dust particles to pass into the vacuum pump which is devastating for scroll pumps!
    HR failed their customers big with offering this pump! I just found out this morning they released a video to conduct additional maintenance on these pumps that was never mentioned in any documentation I read and certainly was omitted on first delivery! Probably too late for my dying pump! ua-cam.com/video/1osW04DwtbI/v-deo.html
    @Phil I've read some posts about the oil pumps need oil drained if to be left idle for long durations. Is that true?

      I don't think it's a good idea to leave organics (food) or acidic water in the vacuum pump long or short term. Best to drain and change the oil.

    Im very concerned about breathing in any vapor because I will place this in my bedroom. Is this a genuine concern? Thank you so much for your informative video!

    • @Philat4800feet
      @Philat4800feet  3 місяці тому

      If you have any concerns you should obtain the SDS (formerly MSDS) on the oil (or product) you are using and review the risks with yourself or with your doctor. The issue is long-term effects. A dryer vent tube and internal booster fan could be placed over the demister and discharged out a window.

    • @Philat4800feet

      If it's from Scroll Labs there nothing to do. If it's from HR you could take it apart and replace bad bearings now. Individual bearings are available from Grainger and Applied Industrial but at twice the price.

    Phil, always love your channel. The only thing is you missed information on the oil free pumps. At least the little white one. They will not do vinegar because that’s very acidic and will destroy the diaphragms and check valve in the pump. So if you stay away from Tabasco, hot sauce or something with vinegar to try to freeze dry, you’ll be in better shape without destroying the pump. But normal freeze drying carrots celery soups etc. Once you’re done unhook your hose and when you go into the five minute run time after the freeze dry cycle. Spray five pumps of 70% alcohol in the suction side of the pump. And it will preserve and make your pump run many years longer. Learn this out the hard way. But Dave from scroll labs was very helpful. Repaired my pump for free .All I paid for with shipping. It was still under warranty. But I’ve been freeze-drying with it ever since ,as long as I spray it with alcohol after every batch. Did one year before I blew the pump up. Been running the pump for two years now since escrow lab sent it back to me. I should go check my hours but regardless. And I’m still getting my vacuum down to 300 to 325 Militar

      I'd say you're the exception to the rule. HR has lost millions to Scroll Labs on refused claims. I'm glad it works for you.

    Do you ever heat the used oil on a stovetop to drive out moisture?

    • @Philat4800feet
      @Philat4800feet  5 місяців тому

      I have tried this but the heat reduces the life of the oil once the heat exceeds 250 degrees. You can do the same by placing the oil in your freeze drier. Moisture will boil at room temperature at 70 degrees at 20,000 mtorr

    • @MEMcAndrews
      @MEMcAndrews 5 місяців тому

      Good advice. Don’t run a freeze dry cycle on the oil. Simply put it in the chamber and run the vacuum pump to take down the pressure; which will suck out the moisture.
      The irony is that, when you suck out the moisture from the “old” oil, you’ll be contacting the new oil 😂

    Phil, does the pump oil become acidic after freeze drying?

    • @Philat4800feet
      @Philat4800feet  5 місяців тому +1

      Not so much, but can if the same oil remains in the pump long term. Any acidity is flushed out with the oil and caught in the paper filtering element.

    • @richarddavies6657
      @richarddavies6657 5 місяців тому

      Thanks, I would think that any acidity would be in the water that is entrained in the oil, and so filtering oil after each batch would remove any acidic water. I filter my pump oil continuously throughout each batch and have never found any water in my oil. Using Premier pump and oil filter with a water separator. Oil is pulled through filter with a 12v diesel fuel pump and returned to the vacuum pump.

      I was wondering if the Nu-Calgon Phase III refrigerant acid oil test would detect acid in vacuum pump oils. It appears to work generically on mineral oils.

      I send my oil to a company called Gearhead for testing. They do not test for PH. I have a stand alone PH tester for the water. A sample of their testing can be found on this video:

      It would be interesting to perform your acid oil test. Another oil test can be found here:

      That's a great idea. The problem with oil free pumps is they don't have the oil coating to protect the parts
