My favorite Tom Cruise movie and one of my favorite movies overall.
Try The Twilight Samurai - starring Hiroyuki Sanada - the guy who plays Uijo in this movie.
Twilight Samurai won a huge number of international awards but was snubbed by the academy awards - which led to a change of the rules for foreign movies, which now go into the main category. Sanada should have been given the oscar for best actor that year - by a million miles.
The Twilight Samurai is the BEST movie you have never heard of, and a million times better than the last samurai.

Randomly revisiting this reaction made me think, maybe "Kingdom of Heaven" would be another great one sorta in this line.
It's an incredible film, especially in it's extended/director's cut.
It is as beautiful as it is brutal, and absolutely poignant & timeless on softly addressing religion and it's most dire consequences.
Defintitely worth a watch, even if this comment dies into the tube abyss.
I love this film. It's beautifully shot and perfectly acted by everyone in it. It's one of my favourite Tom Cruise movies.
This movie is inspired by the real life Satsuma rebellion lead by the samurai Saigō Takamori and the last battle is based on the battle of Shiroyama. The Swedish power metal band Sabaton who makes songs based on real life military history has a song called Shiroyama about that battle.

I was at a zoo a couple years ago and lost my family in the crowd and while calling them in front of the tiger exhibit i got directed in the opposite direction and while looking in that direction i heard a bang on the glass and saw a tiger shrugging off bumping his head on the glass trying to pounce me... i hate cats lol

but the film maker made some creative freedom. The American Captain is actually French to mention a few. Kindly research if interested about the true history.

The perspective is skewed in this movie. The samurai were the bad guys that were fighting to maintain a way of life that no one else wanted. A life where they could continue chopping off the heads of whoever wouldn't bow to them.
Why was the original taken down?

But of course hollywood had to change it to an american hero as they always do!
There was no foreigner important enough in Satsuma rebellion to be mad that they changed his nationality. The only thing that could be "upsetting" is that samurai did use firearms.

I am a man and I wore my sister's dress once. It was mind blowing because how comfortable and free it felt. Too bad it would be weird wearing that outside. Maybe one day it wouldn't look weird and I can wear it outside.
Did you notice the guy who fires him at the beginning is the same actor that plays major winters in band of Brothers
Looks similar but it's not. The guy in this movie is William Atherton and Major Winters was played by Damien Lewis.
As MrHitz notes, William Atherton...I remember thinking how odd it was to see the "Walter Peck from the EPA" character from the original Ghostbusters pushing Winchesters in the 1870s. LOL
