- For Toyota 4runner, may also apply to tacoma and FJ cruiser with electronic shifting mechanism. The 4wd indicator lights blink constantly after selecting 4wd. It engages but center differential remains locked due to a sensor error or failure to engage fully. Mine was fixed by replacing the front 4wd actuator. Hey man I am so glad I found another video on why my 4wd is not working, because I have tried everything else, I mean hours of work, and nothing worked. So I'm gonna take it apart and run some tests on that actuator, and if I replace it and that doesn't work i'll take it to a real shop lol.

Wouldn't draining the front diff keep oil from leaking onto the mated surfaces when installing the actuator?
That is not a vent. It is an airline. When you turn the switch, air is applied to the actuator motor which in turn activates the motor and engages or disengages the actuator. It is very low pressure air, but must be present to activate the motor. These could easily be confused with other actual vents on some components.
My lights are flashing and this hose looks disconnected, wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be like that so I will try.
Would it be possible to remove the old actuator and leave the electrical plugged in and test if it's working? I'm experiencing the exact same problem on my 07 but would like to test the current actuator before replacing.
Hook it up to some 12 volt power

My 04 have the problem I already replaced the actuator and still the same lights blinking when I replaced the actuator it was full of water inside. Someone told me to replace the 4x4 computer..??
How did you get to the top two bolts?
Looking at it from the video I would guess an extension with a wobble socket over the sub frame would be easy?
@@djs1809 @DJ S Yep, thats exactly what I did. The whole process took abut 20 minutes with the overall time at about an hour. I did take out the front two diff arm bolts which dropped the diff low enough to get better access. I will add doing that made the process way easier.

No, it's the v6, maybe yours is a different year?
V8's are AWD, we don't have front diff actuator. We have centre diff lock, means transfer case Lock.

I got the same problem with a toyota 4runner 99 the 4x4 is blinking and center yellow 🟡 light too,and the 4x4 it's locked 🔒 can't shifts I think that is the problem why the transmission won't work the car don't move the transmission shifts but don't go is clogged on it

4wd front actuator
My son has a 2007 4runner V6 and the 4x4 will not disengage. Both the green and yellow light are on but only the yellow light is blinking. Would this be the same issue with the front actuator needing replaced?

@@edace1231 Not yet, stick stuck in 4hi and will go back into 2hi. I'm being told its the front actuator that stuck, and to focus there to solve the issue. If you get your fix before we get to it please let me know.
@@DP-ke3vf I just manually turned 4x4 off for now
@D P there are 2 actuators one in the front and one in the middle. If you go to the middle actuator by the transfer case remove the plastic cover and turn the gear until you hear a click that will turn off 4x4 and btw mine was full of water once I removed the water the light went away
