Vaslav Nijinsky - Unique Footage

- This is probably unique footage of perhaps the greatest Ballets Russes dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky (1888-1950).
This legendary dancer is seen here exiting the Sacher Hotel in Vienna and walking down the street with an American reporter.
It was shot mid September 1945 at the beginning of the allied occupation by Pathe or Paramount cameramen.
Apparently there was also footage of Nijinsky seated with his wife, Romola, in Burggarden and of Nijinsky and one of the reporters walking through a park. This film now seems lost.

Diaghilev's philosophy was to have the audience be part of the art. That's why.
Am I the only one who thinks that Nijinsky looks beautiful even in his old days? His exotic, attractive features are still there! :')

I am glad to know that Nijinsky was able to start communicating and interacting again in the last years of his life. I can't imagine what it was like for such a free bird to have been so confined and to have had to endure horrid treatments like the insulin shock therapy. No wonder his kidneys gave out.

Although it would be wonderful to see footage of Nijinsky dancing, it doesnt matter that there may never be. His choreography of the Rites Of Spring for example is confirmation enough of his status; for the same reason why we have only their music sheets - and not recordings obviously- to prove that Mozart and Pagannini were also geniuses on the piano and violin. They created what they performed.
yes, i agree - their legacy lives on in their work. but i have a lingering wish to see something of le dieu de la dance on film. there is supposed (great urban myth no doubt) to be film of a performance at an after in NY in the American tour of 1916 ... not holding my breath!

and one photograph with his wife Romola, who was my grand-Aunt, seems to be in front of the so-called Gloriette on the top of the park of Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna. Thank You so much for sharing. Sad, if a footage of Burggarden is lost.
yes, i know and have that photo. did you know she was interviewed by Donya Feuer in Stockholm, June 1974? The interview was used by Feuer in her documentary on the life of Nijinsky, ‘Et liv’, which was produced by J. Andreassen for Norsk Rikskringkasting (NRK) in 1974. The documentary included readings from Nijinsky's diary read by Knut Husebo. It was aired on Norwegian television in April 1975 with a narration read by Anne Marit Jacobsen.

@@notyourtypicalwatchreview2563 Oh thanks, yes it´s impressing! Her mother was the sister of my great grandfather. So she was my second degree grand aunt, if this is correctly spoken in English ;) .. I never met her though, she was living abroad and so were we. Family members living in Hungary know more about her and had contact with her and Nijinsky´s daughters.

there is what i suspect is a great urban myth - that the dancer was filmed in the US at an after party at a patron's home - it is supposed to be owned by an old wealthy family. i'm not holding my breath for it to go public! but then one never knows!

it's nice to be me at last! i think i was over cautious - i'd used my full name for my first YT channel and got some (only a few thankfully!) of people sending me emails denigrating my interest in ballet - just bowled me over with amazement! but i've been too cautious and have now become me again - a great feeling!

i agree - footage of Nijinsky might surprise everyone in comparison to today. i guess the thing is to only compare with when the dancer was performing - two knows, maybe in the future today's dancers' technique will seem inadequate - hard to imagine, but.
doesn't it - he gave so much and then was so abandoned when he slipped into madness. :(

It does. Seeing him was very poignant. He looks exactly like himself, older. Does not look "crazy". It's like a glimpse into another world, an altered state.
He deserved more from life...

i agree - there is a great urban myth that Nijinsky was filmed at an after party out of NY when the RB toured the states - at a patron's home - the word is the footage is owned by the descendants of this wealthy family. but maybe Christian Compte's morphing fantasies are the closest we'll get in our life time!
yes,it's a lot to to with fashion and what people consider of value at any particular time. i still think that in Russia recently and now there have been developments that has pushed technique forward - there are limits of course to such development can go of course. and technique for something else is the thing, as we say often enough.
also about his supposed technique ,there is not reason that in his case could be different that for karsavina or pavlova that in films appairs very weak in comparision with nowadays dancers,surely was phenomenal at his time ,but hardly doubt that could be so impressive at our eyes ,more probable would be a delusion .so let's him at his time and his legend.
His placement and technique were probably quite different from today, but his jump was undeniable.
There has to be, something, somewhere, film of him. A jete or two, that's all I ask. Those Soviet vaults have something, Pavlova luckily was filmed, they were paired together so many times! Look!!! Look!!! You are Indiana Jones Hall, look!!! Mariinsky attic, when was it last time looked into?

i was thinking of the flexibility and extensions of particularly female dancers - where it has reached extremes today that were not there in the past - though as someone said Valentina Semyukova's extensions are good compared with today - though this was not typical back then

yes, i think that's right - rather than be an exact representation of how Nijinsky looked as the faun it's more ideas about of him in that role.

hi Annephelides. no not footage at all. Christian Compte takes Baron de Meyer photographs and has a program to morph them - alter them slightly - so that when all these alterations come together they seem like film. he himself explains the process in 'Interview Christian Comte au sujet du film Nijinsky 1912": Interview Christian Comte au sujet du film Nijinsky 1912

Come to think of it, I was startled by the change of 'cameraposition' in the video, because I would have expected one viewpoint in that time. But the has obviously to do with the different picture Christian Compte assembled to make these 'movies'.
Must be a hell of a lot of work, and indeed, it gives us an impression.
Annephelides hi! there was a sense that maybe the Christian Compte film was real when it first appeared - he said in the upload that the footage had been found in an old family estate home - where else, but in an attic. then he confessed to the morphing technology - this is probably what about
i think the only real possibility i've heard of - but is suspect a great urban myth - Nijinsky would perform at after show parties of wealthy BR benefactors - and there is supposed to be film of one such performance in the USA - held now by the family who do not want it to be public.
yes, the morphing is fun and gives a sense of this legendary dancer.

don't think so the great development of technique was in 30's when chabukiani sergeyev yermolayev messerer created the really virtuoso maledancing later untill today was developed and rifinished but imo now is the top ,there are phisicall limits that hardly can be surpassed .

I have heard that there is footage of Nijinsky accompanied by a nurse in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, possibly 1930's.
+Pryor Dodge yes, i've heard of this footage but sadly it's not anywhere in the public domain. there is also supposed to be film of him dancing at a party in New York given by a patron after a performance - maybe a great urban myth!

l saw greatly flex and ext in class also in past times ,but imo on stage ballerinas didn't considered rafinate performing it ,now simply changed mind and fashion and shows freely this kind of triks ,would be like thinking that misha or soloviev could'n perform a 540 ,simply wasn't considered a kind of step to perform on stage.

yes, i've read Nijinsky was proficient on pointe and there's an interesting article on this here: www.dance.net/topic/10144373/1/Pointe-General/Nijinsky-Performing-en-pointe-1913.html&replies=0 i wonder if Diaghilev, who so controlled the way his dancers would be seen in photos, didn't have a hand in this? I also want to agree. I thought this at times when reading about him. There were moments when he was called "crazy" or "sick" for being the artist he was. And the highly sensitive person. (And by no means do I mean to claim that he was not il ). Very tragic!

Diaghilev would not allow his company and its dancers to be filmed - this is the only film of Nijinsky

it comes from the ballet Nijinsky was perhaps most famous for - 'Le Spectre de la Rose'. i read "In 1819, Carl Maria von Weber wrote a work for piano called Aufforderung zum Tanz. He also wrote a program for this work about a young man and woman who meet, dance, and part at a ball. The quiet music at the opening of Aufforderung leads to some beautiful (and busy) waltz tunes before the work ends with the opening music.[6] In 1841, Hector Berlioz orchestrated Aufforderung. This version of the music was used for a short ballet in Weber's opera Der Freischütz at the Paris Opéra.[7] It was the Berlioz version of the original piano piece that was used for the ballet Le Spectre de la rose. " :)

by "probably unique footage" i meant probably the only extant film of the dancer - "probably" as there is a myth of footage of Nijinsky dancing at an after performance party in New York during his 1916 tour of the country

@@JohnRaymondHall Hay veces en que las enfermedades mentales se desarrollan, ha partir de los 20 o 25 años y generalmente por algún tipo de estrés o presión. Es posible que la enfermedad se agudizó a partir de la ruptura con Diaghilev. Eso nunca so sabremos a ciencia cierta. Saludos,
