2022 and I’m still coming back to this. My favorite poem ever.
Back here in 2023 ❤
This is what got me into poetry. I remember sitting on a porch in single degree weather until 5am listening to buddy. I went inside to bed once I reached in the cooler for another beer and realized the ice water was warm, compared to the ambient temperature. I love Buddy. I hope you've checked out his other stuff, or been to a show?
I saw him perform this in Atlanta. The whole show felt like you were a part of something so amazing that no one else was aware of. One of the absolute best shows I've ever seen. I took my girlfriend at the time. We had just started dating. We're married now. Crazy it was that long ago.
In 2022, I fell in the deepest love of my life. It didn’t work out, but this poem is almost a perfect allegory for that relationship. The details and the choppiness and incoherence. A glimpse at the madness of someone’s turmoil-ridden inner thoughts.
But forgiveness.
Forgiveness.
That message is the one I missed and needed. That’s why I come back here time and time again.
This poem and this specific recitation of the poem is so powerful and meaningful to me.
2024 and will always ❤
i don’t listen to or read poetry. i have no idea how i came across this a decade ago. but damn, i’m glad i somehow did. this poem is so beautiful. it will stick with me forever
I’m pretty sure Buddy Wakefield is a Buddha who realized enlightenment and choose to come back to our realm of hungry ghosts. He must’ve chosen the name Buddy Wakefield because it’s too perfect. This poem changed everything for me. I went from a drug addict on the edge of death to hosting my own poetry events and working a good job. I found this poem when I was in rehab. Everything about this poem spoke to the struggle of codependency and self realization. Truly a Masterpiece. Spoken word poetry saves lives.
happy to hear you’re doing better
'forgiveness is the release of all hope for a better past'
That was my first tattoo. My favourite by far. Not his words but I'm sure you're allowed to love the messenger
@@joshuawilliams2714 oh man I wanted that to be my next so stoked that I’m not the only one. Can you post a picture of it?
I can email you a picture or find some way of sending it.
The two of you are heartening. We find inspiration is the strangest of places, but we still find it...
"Never say die."
"Your difference is your strength."
A very close friend of mine showed me this a long time ago. She passed away so many years ago now, but I still visit this poem often. I keep her memory alive and help keep myself alive, too.
Forgiveness is for anyone who needs safe passage from my mind.
This poem (specifically this performance) is so immensely beautiful and heartbreaking.
9 years later.... still does the trick
I can't watch this without crying. Even after 50+ times.
I'm the exact same way. Every. Single. Time. It was uncontrollable when I heard him live.
Ludwig Landström same every time.
it's the music... if you think about it. sure the prose is endearing af and all that... but imagine listening to the recital without the heart wrenching drone of the the solo violin and the words, though wonderful... become a lot drier. Less emotive. It's the music. It's ALWAYS THE MUSIC that gets one to tears
I never get sick of watching it. It’s helped to forgive in ways I never thought possible.
This is what made me fall in love with Buddy Wakefield…..now…..as I’m watching my own marriage end in a divorce these words never felt more real. Thank you for capturing the essence of what this experience is like ❤️
I've been going through a divorce for most of the last year and this poem keeps coming back to me.
I get to perform with Buddy tonight at Kosmos in Albuquerque, New Mexico tonight!
I'll be doing the opening piece with him! I'm excited!!!
One of the best examples of a sincere man. Such a huge influence in my life, especially as someone who grew up with no father and struggled with finding God and learning how to become a genuine man. His words helped me see spirituality, manhood, and life in a different way. Thank you Buddy for speaking with an honesty and curiosity that I could only hope to gain an ounce of in my life.
Memories. Such a sacred time.
This poem has been a motif in my mind during the past years
"God damn, it felt amazing the days you were happy to see me."
i am crying right now
"This is an apology letter to the both of us for how long it took me to let things go."
Gets me every time..
This poem saved my life.
Haven't heard of this guy before, but someone on social media pointed me to this poem in particular. It's beautiful. Writing is an art.
This poem has changed the way I look at my life; Buddy, I love you.
I was just thinking about this.
The line about forgiveness is so powerful
What's crazy is to finally understand what this poem means after a life's experience. Wow.
The second time he says "If I was created in God's image..." is, I think, my favorite part of this poem simply because of all the EMOTION you can in his face when he says it all. You can see it in his eyes, hear it in his voice, and just feel it oozing off his whole body.
Thank you son for the kick. Buddy Wakefield is needed especially now, and God always delivers.
I wish this was on spotify so bad. Such a beautiful piece fhat i had listened to when it first was put here.
Damn still gets me.
Everything Everytime Everywhere
i can listen to filthy dubstep all day but i can still sit back and tear up when i listen to this. buddy is a god of poetry
One of the most beautiful pieces of writing I've heard. So great.
I could've sworn you had sung me a love song back there...and that you meant it. But i guess some people just chew with their mouths open..
Hits hard everytime. Even years after. Please done promise and make plans when you know isn't shit in your future with someone.
this is the most beautiful poem ive ever heard...i watch this video at least once a week and i cry everytime. i love it.
Buddy Wakefield makes me glad that I'm alive.
this is one of the best poems I've heard in a while... wow.
Hmmms are the greatest compliment to a poets righting. Shows you feel what they are saying.
I have listened to this poem time and time again and it only gets better. I hope this gets taught in schools someday
Going through a tough breakup and I always come back to this video when I feel this way. Too real
These words changed how I thought about the world
Initially
For the worse
And eventually
For the better.
I owe this man my entire world view. The beauty, the pain. So much meaning. So god damned important. Thankyou, sir. Thankyou.
yes!
incredible. years later and it gets me every time.
if i could. i want to personally thank Buddy because this is such a perfect poem to describe such a big part of my life. thanks
The other version of this live is much more intense. You can actually hear him crack up and cry a little. This is the most beautiful poem ever.
I remember this piece is what single-handedly got me into performing poetry.
Well that got the tears flowing.
And finally, on my one millionth listening of this that just made ALL of the sense!
My english teacher introduced me to Buddy Wakefield this year while we were learning more about poetry and symbolisim. I love Buddy Wakefield.
this poem hits me hard every time i hear it.
it never fails to give me goosebumps & every time i listen to it i wanna write pages and pages of beautiful thoughts.
thank you buddy :)
2:15 “It’s just that I could’ve swore you sung me a love song back there…and that you meant it”
This poem inspired me so much. I have part of spoken word communities for years and now I host my own event. Thanks buddy!
"i smashed a beehive into the ocean to try and make our splash last longer. do you remember? all the honey, that had me looking like a jelly fish." is perfect.
if it's not there yet...listen to it as much as you can stand..with no pause..then you'll see the beauty, and the honesty, and the things he's trying to find in this poem
This is absolutely the most beautiful poem I have ever had the privilege to hear.
If you folks enable community members to contribute, I would love to fix up the English captions to make this accessible for those who use them!
I love you, Buddy. This is one of your best. Who the hell thumbs downed this?
that was an amazing night, my first slam poetry show and i fell in love. i can't even describe simply how deep this love i have for this guy runs. he is my soul
omg such a great poem and they way he performed it was too amazing for words. this poem really got to me
This was honestly beautiful, I felt every word and I can't stop crying. Speechless.
Incredible. I think I've replayed this over a dozen times. It's playing again now as I type and I STILL have to fight back tears. WTH?!?! lol...authentically brilliant.
3:30 on gave me chills..he is easily my fav poet.
he has changed my life. I will be blessed to see him on his new tour for the second time friday!
This always makes me bawl. Still.
I cant get enough of this poem. Buddy, you are the man.
it still blows me away...
I can't stop watching him he's just so honest and real and relatable
I can’t listen to this and not cry.
You can't help but be entirely moved by this.
If anyone's interested, the music is 'Spiegel Im Spiegel' by Arvo Pärt.
I still listen to this regularly. After 9 years.
I try so hard to write like him but its just hard, he's so amazing and i hope i can achieve his greatness some day
have you ever performed poetry for an audience? there's nothing better or more encouraging that someone snapping or saying, "Hmmm" or "C'mon!" it's really a special feeling when you make someone feel from what you've written. the "hmmm"s really make it better.
Crying my eyes out, he is AMAZING
This is absolutely amazing!!!!!
2023 and still coming back gives me life!!
haven't been moved like this in a very long time astounding
I can't even start on how brilliant this man is.
I get to see him perform in one week!!!! I could pee my pants I'm so excited!
Wow. Just incredibly moving. I am speechless after this performance.
Gah, he as at our school today. He was so funny, and his poems were so deep and true... I can say he's my new role model
Fantastic poem, great performance, and an amazing recording of it!
"It was not my intention to make such a
production of the emptiness between us
playing tuba on the tombstone of a soprano
to try and keep some dead singer’s perspective alive"
😭😭😭
I could listen to this all day.
again...must hear it again
As has been said about a chosen few others, in another age, this man would be deemed a prophet.
all i can say is that you are simply amazing, and that i insipre to one day be as good as you
Amazing, i have no idea how anyone could give a thumbs down.
im bawling. this is where i am, in the essence of every word that was said,
Suppose you've never gone to a live reading then? It's emotional reaction and we writers appreciate it...a lot. It tells us our words are making your breath. It tells us our words are not going unnoticed.
Did anyone else just wipe the tears from their eyes?...
ahhh i wish he would come to Minnesota
Four people couldn't figure out how to turn on the sound to their computers.
Simply amazing :).
One of my all-time favorites
This gets me everytime, god bless...
Thank you Buddy.
He's got a really cool intonation, sort of like Rives. Nice!
Beautiful, Buddy.
Listen to "Flockprinting", "Giant Saint Everything", and then this, in that order. You can almost hear "the Light shifting in between" the moments of his life.
On a goal to perform in every state, he came to Decatur, Alabama last year.
Easy to say-- one of the best moments in my life... that I shared with him and 15 other people in the audience.
thank you soo much
12 people have never had love and watched it walk away.
Buddy's mad tight. Thanks.
I love how he invests in his characters
mesmerizing images. great talent.
It makes me want to cry and just let everything out.
I found this largely by accident.
Ive been reading buddy for a while but had never heard this one before.
hes so just fucking good; how he nails that feeling so precisely,
its nice to know someone else carries that.
come to california buddy.
please.
First memorable poet speaking? (More like living and breathing) in maybe forever. Deeply moving. Honest disclosure...have not heard many poets, merely read, he brings life to his words.
You broke me down with your work. I thank you.
Many years later, another heartbreak but here i am, stronger. But oh man you bring up emotions, memories and everything in between.
@AbattoirDream
Absolutely shattered as in brutally beautiful.
