I was 16 when I first heard this poem being performed live in a auditorium at brown University,i am 27 now and I come back to hear it every so often to remember a time that seems a life time ago.

I was 15, sitting on a bench that we called Colin, smoking, drinking, with friends I thought were bigger than anything. I am now 26. I too listen to remember those times. What a wonderful way to remember.

I could be wrong, but I always interpreted the last lines ("Sarah, we are apples, our love is an arrow" and on-wards) to refer to the idea of shooting an apple off someone's head with an arrow. He's saying that being in love means making yourself vulnerable, and he has the faith for her to shoot straight.

Ten years later, this is even more relevant. One of my all time favorites, coming true. I will hold this in my heart forever. EDIT May 2023. This never gets old. It changes with my time line, but I love it as much as the first time I heard it.

This is so freaking beautiful. I don't even know how many times I've listened to it, and I say 'listen to it' because I've downloaded the audio to listen to off my iphone. Believe me, laying in bed at night with all the lights off with only this to listen to is truly beautiful.

okay I’ve been on such an intense internet rabbit hole because I listened to this poem years ago and couldn’t quite remember which poem it was but I remembered loving it and feeling so transformed by Anis. Today, I was watching episode 3 of Lovecraft Country and I heard the instrumental which I now know is titled Windows by The Albumn Leaf. The song was used in the opening sequence of the third episode while a character cries in a moment that is just as aching and transformational. I honestly don’t know how long I’ve been searching trying to connect the poem to the song and then to the show and finally I found it so I guess I just wanted to find someone else who felt the music deeply too. Wow.

@@existentialmel Wow flashback to this comment haha. I loved the songs use in Lovecraft Country too, it really made for such a impactful scene which is saying something in such an intense show. I'm glad to know someone else appreciated it too. I revisit this video a lot even now, but thanks for dragging me in for another check in. :)

@hikatieloll Well, yes and no. Most of the obscure lines in the opening section are art references, which makes sense as he has his MFA. Things like 'feed grapes to the ants' is a reference to Dali, because he would paint Ants to symbolize death and decay. So here Anis is saying that we should encourage the breakdown of what is previously held in love, art, and society.
